Epistle:Hebrews 2:14-18Since, therefore, the children share flesh and blood, hehimself likewise shared the same things, so thatthrough death he might destroy the one who has thepower of death, that is, the devil, and free those whoall their lives were held in slavery by the fear of death. For it is clear that he did not come to help angels, butthe descendants of Abraham. Therefore he had tobecome like his brothers and sisters in every respect,so that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest inthe service of God, to make a sacrifice of atonementfor the sins of the people. Because he himself wastested by what he suffered, he is able to help thosewho are being tested. This is the Word of the LordThanks be to God.Gospel Reading:Luke 2:22-40Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to LukeGlory to you, O LordWhen the time came for their purification according tothe law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem topresent him to the Lord (as it is written in the law of theLord, “Every firstborn male shall be designated as holyto the Lord”), and they offered a sacrifice according towhat is stated in the law of the Lord, “a pair ofturtledoves or two young pigeons.”Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name wasSimeon, this man was righteous and devout, lookingforward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spiritrested on him. It had been revealed to him by the HolySpirit that he would not see death before he had seenthe Lord’s Messiah. Guided by the Spirit, Simeoncame into the temple; and when the parents brought in2

the child Jesus, to do for him what was customaryunder the law, Simeon took him in his arms andpraised God, saying,“Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word;for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of allpeoples,a light for revelation to the Gentilesand for glory to your people Israel.”And the child’s father and mother were amazed atwhat was being said about him. Then Simeonblessed them and said to his mother Mary, “This childis destined for the falling and the rising of many inIsrael, and to be a sign that will be opposed so thatthe inner thoughts of many will be revealed - and asword will pierce your own soul too.”There was also a prophet, Anna the daughter ofPhanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a greatage, having lived with her husband seven years afterher marriage, then as a widow to the age of eightyfour. She never left the temple but worshiped therewith fasting and prayer night and day. At thatmoment she came, and began to praise God and tospeak about the child to all who were looking for theredemption of Jerusalem. When they had finished everything required by thelaw of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their owntown of Nazareth. The child grew and becamestrong, filled with wisdom; and the favour of God wasupon him. .This is the Gospel of the LordPraise to you, O Christ3
