By looking at yourschool grades and your SAT scores, college admissions officers get a sense of you as a potential student—a person they’d like to have in their school.The SAT tries to measure your ability to reasonusing facts that are part of your general knowledgeor facts that are included in your test booklet.You’re not required to recall great chunks of historyor literature or science. You’re not even required torecall most math formulas—they’re printed right inthe test booklet.Assessment tests are essentially multiplechoice tests. Your score depends upon how manycorrect answers you get within a definite period oftime. Speed is important, but so is accuracy. Youhave to pace yourself so that you don’t sacrificespeed to gain accuracy (or sacrifice accuracy togain speed).OVERVIEW AND CONTENTThis is the actual format of the SAT. The total testing time allowed is 33 4 hours. There are ten sectionson the test. You are given 25 minutes apiece tocomplete seven of them. They are: 1 essay-writing section 2 critical reading sections 2 mathematics sections 1 writing skills section 1 “experimental” section (critical reading,writing skills, or mathematics)The eighth and ninth sections take 20 minutesapiece. They are: 1 critical reading section 1 mathematics sectionFinally, there is an additional 10-minutesection. It is: 1 writing skills sectionThese sections will all appear on the SAT.However, the order in which they appear is likelyto vary from test to test.Not counting the experimental section, thethree critical reading sections should contain a totalof 19 sentence completion questions and 48 reading comprehension questions. More than half ofthe critical reading questions on the SAT directlytest your reading comprehension.Pay particular attention to how these criticalreading sections are organized. All three sectionscontain groups of sentence completion questions followed by groups of reading comprehension questions. The sentence completion questions arearranged in order of difficulty: they start out witheasy “warm-up” questions and get more and moredifficult as they go along. (The reading comprehension questions do not necessarily get more difficultas they go along. They are generally arranged to follow the passage’s organization; questions aboutmaterial found early in the passage come beforequestions about material occurring later. However, intwo of the three sections, questions based on shortreading passages—100 words or so—precede questions based on longer passages of 500 to 800 words,and students may find answering questions aboutmaterial in a short passage easier than answeringquestions about material in a long passage.)

Answer thequestions on the basis of what is stated orimplied in that passage.SENTENCE COMPLETION QUESTIONSCertain qualities common to the sonnetshould be noted. Its definite restrictions makeit a challenge to the artistry of the poet andLine call for all the technical skill at the poet’s(5) command. The more or less set rhyme patternsoccurring regularly within the short space offourteen lines afford a pleasant effect on theear of the reader, and can create truly musicaleffects. The rigidity of the form precludes a(10) too great economy or too great prodigality ofwords. Emphasis is placed on exactness andperfection of expression. The brevity of theform favors concentrated expression of ideasor passion.Sentence completion questions ask you to fill inthe blanks. Your job is to find the word or phrasethat best completes the sentence’s meaning.Directions: Choose the word or set of wordsthat, when inserted in the sentence, best fitsthe meaning of the sentence as a whole.Brown, this biography suggests, was anemployer, giving generous bonuses one day,ordering pay cuts the next.(A) indifferent(B) objective(C) unpredictable(D) ineffectual(E) unobtrusiveIf you insert the different answer choices in thesentence, (C) by definition makes the most sense.Someone who gives bonuses one day and orderspay cuts the next clearly is unpredictable—no onecan tell what he’s going to do next.To learn how to handle sentence completionquestions, turn to Part III.READING COMPREHENSION QUESTIONSReading comprehension questions ask about a passage’s main idea or specific details, the author’sattitude to the subject, the author’s logic and techniques, the implications of the discussion, or themeaning of specific words.1. The author’s primary purpose is to(A) contrast different types of sonnets(B) criticize the limitations of the sonnet(C) describe the characteristics of the sonnet(D) explain why the sonnet has lost popularityas a literary form(E) encourage readers to compose formalsonnets2. In the opening sentence, the author sayscertain qualities of the sonnet should be noted orobserved. He then goes on to tell you which of thesequalities deserve your attention, characterizing themin some detail. Thus, he describes certain of the sonnet’s qualities or characteristics. The correct answeris (C). You can eliminate the other answers withease. The author is upbeat about the sonnet: he doesn’t say that the sonnet has limitations or that it hasbecome less popular. Similarly, he doesn’t discussdifferent types of sonnets. And while he talks aboutthe challenge of composing formal sonnets, he neverinvites his readers to try writing them.The second question asks you to figure out aword’s meaning from its context. The rhyme patterns have a pleasant effect on the ear of the listener; indeed they provide or afford this effect. Thecorrect answer is (E).The third question asks you to determine howthe author feels about his subject. All the author’scomments about the sonnet form are positive, buthe doesn’t go so far as to gush (he’s not effusive).The only answer that reflects this attitude is (E),scholarly appreciation.See Part IV for tactics that will help you handlethe entire range of reading comprehension questions.BEFORE THE TESTWhat you do on your actual test day clearly mattersgreatly.
