Theatre &Musicat UICOur fifth year as the School of Theatre& Music was a time of continuinggrowth. We welcomed extraordinary newfaculty including Louis Bergonzi (Headof Music/Orchestra), Lydia Diamond(Playwriting), and Myron Elliott (CostumeDesign). We continued to teach talentedstudents from diverse backgrounds inundergraduate degree programs, in musicensembles, and in general educationcourses. Finally, we partnered with theTheatre and Music Alumni Association towelcome 80 alumni and their guests to aPlatinum Jubilee in October to celebrate70 years of theatre and music at UIC!Christine Mary DunfordDirectorThe School of Theatre & Music(STM) provides innovative, rigorous,and comprehensive academic andperformance programs as part of ourdiverse, urban context.Our programs develop practicalknowledge, cultural sensitivity,intellectual resourcefulness, andimaginative daring in emerging artistsand scholars.We connect students to Chicago’sabundant, vibrant theatre culture andto the city’s dynamic jazz and classicalmusic networks.

About ourDegreesBFA ActingStudents gain conservatory-style trainingin a liberal arts setting through our BFAin Acting, working closely with worldclass faculty from Tony Award-winningtheatres. Students take six semesters ofvoice for the actor and six semesters ofmovement for the actor. Eight semestersof acting culminate in a semester-longaudition class taught by casting directorsfrom the Goodman Theatre and ChicagoShakespeare Theater.BA Theatre & PerformanceStudents take advantage of a wide rangeof courses across the discipline and focusstudy through three tracks: general,performanc and authorship.New Faculty Spotlight: Lydia DiamondLydia Diamond is a prolific playwrightand teaching artist whose plays includeSmart People, Stick Fly, Harriet Jacobs,Voyeurs de Venus, The Gift Horse, TheInside, Stage Black, and her adaptationof Toni Morrison’s novel The Bluest Eye.Her works have been produced at theGuthrie, Kansas City Rep, Long WharfRep, Steppenwolf, True Colors Theatre,BMus Jazz StudiesArena Stage and many others, includingher Broadway run of Stick Fly at the CortTheatre on Broadway.BA Theatre Design,Production, & TechnologyStudents develop a strong foundationin theatre through core courses thendeepen their study in the area ofdesign that interests them. Coursesare offered in acting, scenic design,lighting design, costume design, makeup design, set construction, costumeconstruction, stage management,directing, playwriting, and contemporaryperformance. All students graduate witha portfolio.Professionals from some of the largestmusic agencies in the world have recruitedMusic Business students like Meggy Huynhto participate in a variety of internships.Students develop the tools for aprofessional career in jazz and relatedfields of contemporary music. Theyreceive weekly coaching from topChicago jazz musicians, jazz-centric"Meggy is doing a fantastic job for us and Iam glad she won this internship! A prolific recording artist,conductor, composer and educator,Faddis is a consummate musician.

Faculty &Alumni NewsFacultyThis year was the first full year for ournew Head of Music, Dr. Louis Bergonzi. Inaddition to all the work he does to supportand build UIC music programs, Dr Bergonziis the the conductor of the growing UICOrchestra.We are also very proud of our faculty'smany great accomplishments outside ofUIC School of Theatre & Music.Dr. Michael J Anderson, Director of Choraland Vocal Studies, received a two-yearappointment as Artistic Director of theBeijing Tianqiao Performing Arts CenterChildren's Choir.Elbio Barilari, Visiting Lecturer of LatinAmerican Music, acquired the Chicagobased Delmark Records label.Tanera Marshall, Associate Professor, isthe voice coach on the new TV series GoneBaby Gone.Christine Mary Dunford, Director, adaptedthe best-selling novel, Still Alice, andher play had a three-week run in WestYorkshire Playhouse, Ireland.AlumniSchool of Theatre & Music alumni areinfluencing the performing arts in Chicagoand abroad.
