Edition 2My Journey with Men’s Sheds from Australia to Scotland Three Key Learnings By Alan SilcockBefore leaving Australia toreturn to Scotland over twoyears ago, rarely did I clock upconfused reactions when Imentioned Men’s Sheds.More and more Australianswere understanding what aMen’s Shed was and manywere either associated withAlan Silcock - The Men of Leith Men’s Shedone themselves or knewsomeone who was.Not so in Scotland. It was likestepping back two decades as faras knowledge of Men’s Shedswas concerned. People wouldrepeat the name back to me, asif it was some strange Australiancult. Here are three key learnings toconsider.Learning One - EmpowermentThe first Men’s Shed I wasinvited to be a part of was to besituated in a wealthy area ofEdinburgh. I was tasked to createIn two years, I have founded anda ‘senior men’s group’, and thisnow help to manage a verywas to be developed into asuccessful Shed. It did take someMen’s Shed once established. Inegative experiences to get towas successful in recruiting overthis stage. Both the positives andforty men for the group, not badthe negatives, thewhen many in the communityunderstandings and thesaid it would not happen.misunderstandings havegenerated many learnings for me Issues started to occur when thethat may assist you as you reflect Board of Management for theon your own Shed or the state of Charity supporting the groupwould not support the membersMen’s Sheds in Scotland.being empowered to make theirBeing a Board member of theown decisions, lead and manageSMSA has helped to underpin mytheir own group.findings.I had seen men flourish in1Australia when given theopportunity to create theirown destiny again, to workwith other men and determinewhat their shed would do. It’shard enough to get men to joina group in Scotland, but thento tell them what to do andhow to do it, inexcusable.I had no choice but to move onfrom that venture and as isgenerally the case with men’sgroups that are disempowered, the group disintegrated.Learning Two – Core PurposeI have visited a number of groupsin Scotland that refer tothemselves as Sheds. In foundingThe Men of Leith Men’s Shed,Charlie Traylor and I spoke withas many community groups, leaders, politicians, councillorsand stakeholders as we could. Inevery conversation, we outlinedthe same core message, Men’sSheds are a health initiative formen, and they exist for men bymen. Occasionally this sparkedsome conversation, yet it is veryclear. Historically, this was thecore reason for the existence ofMen’s Sheds back to their earlydevelopment in Australia.(Continued on page 2)

Edition 2(Continued from page 1)Learning Three – What a Men’s Shed is NotGiven the growth in the idea of Men’s Sheds in Scotland, it is not surprising that service organisationsor certain community groups could see Men’s Sheds as a convenient source of labour for theirprojects. Already, recruiting has occurred to attract men in order that they might be able to helpclean, grow, plant, paint, build etc on certain community projects under the guise of a Shed. Theseare not Sheds, some Sheds and Shedder’s choose to do that. It is their choice as a Shed as to howthey use their time, as to how they invest their resources. To be clear, Men’s Sheds are not a sourceof labour. In summary, when you have Men’s Sheds that empower and celebrate men, that are authentic tothe core purpose of the Shed movement and aim to encourage men to join together on the projectsor activities they choose, you have a unique community. You have a Men’s Shed.WHAT’S BEING MADE IN SCOTLAND’S MEN’S SHEDS?What the DUCK!A local lady was concerned about the duck population being wiped out by seagulls so Ullapool Shedders created this floating Duck Shed. She owns thelocal deli and when she heard they were acting onher concerns she sent a tray of cakes to theirmeeting. Not even a crumb left for the ducks—welldone Ullapool Men’s Shed. You’re never to old!Ellon Shedders have a go on the carts theymade for the local Rotary club.UpcyclingPicture by Campbelltown CourierChristmas comes early to the Wee Toon Men’s ShedDave Thomsonfrom theWesthill Men’sShed workedwith the localprimary schoolto create thisGreenhousemade fromplastic bottles. We want to seemore of thisplease!Showcase your Sheds work by sending us your pictures with a brief description tocomms@scottishmsa.org.uk2

Edition 2NEWS FROM SCOTLAND’S MEN’S SHEDSLooking at Shed activities from all anglesDalbeattie Men’s Shed has a great new edition to their Shed in theform of a 3D printer. The sophisticated piece of equipment wasacquired as part of their Shed development plan, using fundsgranted by Age Scotland. An adaptor was neededto connect a vacuum to alathe to remove shavingsand dust while turningwood. So one was made!Geoff Alison of the Dalbeattie Shed said “Our Shed already has awell developed wood work, metalwork and picture framing shopbut they do not suit all our members. Some less able memberscannot use the rotating and sharp bladed equipment, and theworkshops have no heating so some members lose dexterity in thecold making machine use hazardous. Hence this grant to developan electronic workshop where less able members can become fullyinvolved.”Printer in actionThe Shed has already completed two commissioned projects, withmany more in the pipeline as well as several Shedders projects.See it in action on Facebook : Dalbeattie Men's Shed videoOther films on You Tube - Dalbeattie Men's Shed July 2017Finished productGalashiels - A tight ‘knit’ community! What do you get when some Knitters andShedders put their creative heads together? Edition 2DATAPROTECTION –DO WE ORDON’T WE?Why do Sheds need to knowabout Data Protection? We are just a group ofvolunteers starting or running aMen’s Shed. Is this reallyrelevant to us or just morebureaucracy which we can dowithout, thank you very much. Ihear this a lot on my travels inSheds and it’s a fair question. The answer is if you are keepingany personal information aboutyour Shed members then you doneed to know their rights underBritish law and this will keep youand them on the right side of thelaw. It doesn’t matter if you are abusiness or a volunteer group.Data is data. The law is changingaround Data Protection but onlyon the 25 May 2018 – this is Dday. The Scottish InformationCommissioner regulates theFreedom of Information(Scotland) Act (FOI(S)A) andEnvironmental Information(Scotland) Regulations (EI(S)R).Both of these regulations onlyapply to public authorities as laidout in their respectivelegislation. So you won’t need tocontact them. The basics around dataprotection are:you should only have enoughinformation about yourmembers which you need forspecific and related purposes. Most Sheds ask for name, contact details, an emergencycontact person, health detailse.g. heart condition, diabetic,Until this new legislation isepilepsy, dementia etc andpassed, and they don’t knowexactly what is going to change, hobbies and interests. This is allkeep up to date at their website: valid info used to keep the Shedrunning smoothly in compliancehttps://ico.org.uk/. You canregister your group now ahead if you have a constitution, haveof this date if you want (we feel become a charity and mostit’s not presently a requirement importantly looking out for yourmembers in case somethingfor most Sheds) with the UKInformation Commissioner (the happens to them while in theShed.ICO) which is a UK wideregulator for the Data Protection You shouldn’t be asking forAct (DPA) and Privacy andinformation on any past orElectronic Regulations (PECR).present criminal convictions forexample. If your Shed is open toDPA applies to personalall men there is no need to haveinformation, covers all sectors, gives individuals rights and is the this information and wouldcreate exclusion policies whichsame legislation across UK.5might go against the law, yourconstitution and Scottish Charityregulations. If your board/groupwant to include this we suggestgetting legal advice first. Men’sSheds are about inclusion andwe realise this can bring updifficult personal issues for us,but they are personal issues notnecessarily legal ones.Your records of members datashould be under lock and keyand accessible to boardmembers and your daily Shedsupervisor. If it’s also on acomputer we suggest it might besafer to have it on an encryptedexternal hard drive held by aboard member, usually thesecretary of the Shed. Thismeans as men change positionson the board the external harddrive is passed on to the nextman and none of the data is kepton personal computers. Priceshave dropped a lot in the pastfew years and you can pick oneup for under 60 e.g. WD 1TBMy Passport Ultra-Portable USB3.0 Hard Drive with Auto Backup. That’s about the basics which wefeel you need to know now andsuggest you do your ownresearch and keep up to datewith this changing legislationand how it might effect you. Wewill do the same and revisit thisafter the 25 May 2018, to giveyou a reminder and what if anyof this new legislation affects usand you.“Preparing for the General DataProtection Regulation 12 Steps”is available in our SMSA onlinemembersResourceLibrary fordownload.

Edition 2TALKING SHEDSWith Jason SchroederThe Scottish Men’s Sheds Associationhas partnered up with GlasgowCaledonian University through the BigLottery to do a three-year researchproject on the sustainability anddevelopment of Sheds in Scotland. This“Sheds for SustainableJason Schroeder, SMSA CEODevelopment” (SSD) plan is part of along-term development of Sheds in Scotland.Westhill MS, the first Men’s Shed in Scotland, has over the yearsheld surveys and supported a PHD student do his degree onMasculinities in a Scottish Men’s Shed. This has helped themovement be taken seriously by local authorities, the NHS and theScottish Government to name a few. It is the ‘behind the scenes’ongoing monitoring, evaluating and sharing that has helped get ourShed movement to where it is today with over 60 open Sheds and33 in development since 2013. Coordinating a national strategy hasnow resulted in this three-year research project.Get your Shed involvedWe are putting out feelers for up to six Sheds across Scotland invarious stages of development to help keep this momentumpositively moving forward. By inputting your Shed experiences, successes and challenges over the coming three-year period, youwill help build a stronger Scottish Men’s Shed movement.I believe this research will be of immense value in our nationalfunding strategy for Sheds similar to what they have in Australiawhere Shed groups can obtain premises easier than we can hereand have a national funding start up/development strategy. Thisproject will also be the first of its kind and as we like pioneeringnew ways to improve our lives, communities and country to be in abetter state than what we inherited, I invite you to get onboard. To be part of this exciting 3 year project please drop me an emailto jason@scottishmsa.org.uk in the first instance headed‘interested parties’ or call me on07397382533 to discuss. Edition 2SPOTLIGHT ON.By Ross McKemmieThe Barrhead Men’s Shed operated as anassociation for 3 years until becoming a SCIO(Scottish Charity) during the summer of 2016.Now that we have a year’s experience ofmanaging these premises we plan to open moreoften to accommodate more members which weexpect to attract by making our facility betterknown. We then took over the lease of premisescomprising four small industrial units (4x50sqm)knocked into one.The plan for the year ahead is:Because of a deal that our landlord (EastRenfrewshire Council) struck with the previoustenant, the premises included some substantialbenches and an adequate supply of furniture. We had already acquired a certain number ofportable tools and some bench saws so couldpursue constructional activities straight away. The local Council and HSCP agreed to cover ourrent for two years and utility bills for one and wegained grants from Age Scotland, Big Lottery—Awards for All and INTU from the nearbyBraehead shopping centre. This enabled us toincrease our stock of woodworking tools andother equipment very significantly. Acquiring a secure lease and funding forrunning costs for the next 5 years at least Managed increase in membership More varied facilities Better utilisation of existing premises. Building the capacity of the members toshare management and construction tasksContact : www.barrheadmensshed.weebly.comOver the year we have undertaken communalprojects for sale and this brings in a usefulincome. So far the products are mostly foroutdoor use such as benches, planters and birdtables. They are often being commissioned. Our membership has slowly increased by word ofmouth and the workshop is usually fully utilisedwhen we are open.Share your Shed storyContact: comms@scottishmsa.org.uk or call Rhona on 073890614988
