Inverurie Men’sShed opened its workshop in February 2016. Handyperson Scheme (to include domestictasks) mapping exercise of demand and needtook place in 2014/15 in preparation for aproposed Shire-wide Scheme Inverurie chosen to become a DementiaFriendly Community in Aberdeenshire withworkers raising awareness of dementia andInclusive Inverurie’s work around learningdisabilities and the Safe Place Scheme. Artworkshops for those living with dementia andtheir carers held at Bennachie with on-lineresources and materials put on AlzheimersScotland website and a Community GrowingSpace developed at Harlaw. Through the Link Worker, 29 older people,mostly men, regularly attended a lunch cluband took part in a wider activities group. WhatWorks Scotland evaluating the role of the LinkWorker due to the success of the pilot. Syrian New Scots families welcomed intoInverurie and Westhill Aberdeenshire SALUTES project set up toidentify numbers and locations of ex servicespersonnelGarioch Community Planning Group

GARIOCH COMMUNITY PLANREPORT 2013-16 Garioch Welfare Reform Group held a Sort-itPriority 2 Welfare ReformsSaturday offering advice on making the most ofyour moneyOutcome: Inverurie Foodbank which opened in 2013/14The impact of the benefit changes and welfarecontinues to develop and has taken premises inreforms upon individuals and communitiesInverurie Town Centre. Set up bywithin Garioch is mitigatedAberdeenshire Foodbank North (under theTrussell Trust), it takes referrals from adviceWhat We Said We Would Do:and support agencies, health professionals and Set up a Welfare Reform Sub-Group (of theAberdeenshire Council. An Oil Club has been set up in Insch providingeconomies of scale to the community andproviding financial assistance to those who needit Aberdeenshire Council linking with Magpie toreuse items no longer required following thereorganisation of residential care Housing Options and Homelessness Event heldlooking at Allocations, Prevention, HousingSupport and Temporary Accommodation. Garioch Community Kitchen provided sessionsfor those affected through homelessness andchanges to the welfare system. The Kitchensecured 6,000 from the Food StandardsAgency to offer a food skills course followed byFood Hygiene accredited training (a 4 weekcourse was piloted earlier this year withAberdeenshire Alcohol and Drugs Partnershipand found it to be very successful) to helppeople back into employability and which isnow ready to be rolled out.Garioch Community Planning Group

GARIOCH COMMUNITY PLANREPORT 2013-16Partners:Priority 3 CommunitiesOutcome:The communities of Garioch are cohesive andsuccessful with the confidence, capability andcapacity to tackle the things that matter tothemWhat We Said We Would Do: Work with the community of Kingseat for thebenefit of residents, fostering community spiritand encouraging civic pride Work with the communities of Insch, PortElphinstone and Kintore to identify the needsand aspirations of the community throughcommunity-wide engagements and exercises Support the further development of a leisurefacilities management committee in Westhillbringing together the committees of leisurefacilities to work in partnership on issues ofmutual interest Develop a toolkit for voluntary groups detailingthe support available to them in the Gariocharea Take forward the creative place-makingproject “Be Part of the Picture”, supportingcommunity vibrancy, stimulating economicgrowth and delivering physical andenvironmental improvements, through theWard Forums Identify suitable sites for and developcommunity allotments through community-ledManagement CommitteesCommunities of Kingseat, Insch, Port Elphinstone,Kintore and Westhill, Garioch Partnership, AVA,Grampian Housing Association, AberdeenshireHousing Partnership, Police Scotland,Aberdeenshire CouncilSome of What Has Happened Since: We worked with and supported the Kingseatcommunity to identify issues residents werefacing around lack of community facilities andwith the local development generally. As aresult, a newly-formed Kingseat CommunityAssociation produced a Community Action plan During 2013/4, the Insch community respondedvery positively and proactively to a Planning forReal exercise with some 550 people giving theirviews on making Insch an even better place tolive and work resulting in the Insch CommunityAction Plan. The community of Port Elphinstone producedan Action Plan in 2015 highlighting how safethey felt and the pleasant environment butraising issues around road safety and transport The Kintore Community Action Plan of 2015identified four main areas for action – morelocal facilities (shops and social); transportlinks; schools, leisure and community facilitiesand walks and paths The Leisure Chairs in Westhill developed jointworking and funding opportunities and createdWesthill & District Sports and Leisure Hub. “Be Part of the Picture” projects took placeacross Garioch in March 2015. A Guide as to the support available locally inGarioch for voluntary and community groupswas produced. Sites for allotments identified in Inverurie andnegotiations with landowners taking place. Garioch Flood Relief Group set up in January2016. During 2015/16 began to work with residentsof housing developments to look at theirgrounds and building maintenance factoringarrangementsGarioch Community Planning Group

G&NMCSG worked with driving instructorsand young drivers to promote Pass Plus andSkill for Life courses SFRS worked with GP Practices to promotehome fire safety at flu clinics generating 25home visits in Inverurie, 24 in Insch and 19 inKintore. In response to increased numbers of call-outsSafety and Awareness Presentations weregiven to local groups including ShelteredHousing by SFRS An analytical problem profile relevant to theidentified increase in wilful fireraising inGarioch was commissioned with a view toidentifying hot spots, trends and investigativeopportunities A partnership initiative was developedbetween Garioch Community Policing Team,Drugs Action and SACRO to highlight the issuesassociated with alcohol dependency andmaximise Police referrals for partner support. Drop a Glass Size launched in 2013 includingphone app which shows user effect of regularlydrinking too much and “Meet the Hendersons”initiative launched around parental drinking An Alcohol and Older People leaflet wasproduced and distributed widely aroundcommunity outlets and pharmacists advising ofthe risks of consuming alcohol whilst takingmedication.Garioch Community Planning Group

GARIOCH COMMUNITY PLANREPORT 2013-16Priority 5 Children and Young PeopleIntended Outcome:The children and young people of Garioch havethe best start in lifeActions: To be responsive to recommendationsregarding the future of Getting it Right forEvery Child (GIRFEC) and Children’s ServicesNetworks (CSN) and in setting up anddeveloping a local GIRFEC group to fulfil thevision of “Every child will be valued and helpedto realise their potential” Support young people through a Social HealthEducation Drop-In (SHeD) at GariochCommunity Centre offering advice to increaseHealth & Wellbeing of young people includingthose presenting as homeless Deliver Grow Well programme to all primaryschools in Inverurie Children’s ServicesNetwork (CSN), to support children and theirfamilies to grow well, make healthy choicesand tackle the inequalities in health that affecthealthy weight To develop new and extend existing youthcafes To provide a safe place for young people tomeet through the provision of a Youth Shelterin BlackburnPartners:Aberdeenshire Council, NHS Grampian, PoliceScotland, Action Kintore, Kintore Youth Forum,Inverurie Youth Forum, Inverurie CommunityDevelopment Group, Westhill Youth Forum,Westhill Community Development Group,Kemnay Youth Forum, Kinellar Youth ForumSome of What Has Happened Since: The Garioch GIRFEC group has beenestablished and is developing its role andremit. A Social Health Education Drop-in was setup by NHS Grampian, Community Learning& Development, Education and the InverurieYouth Forum, to give young people freeadvice, support and information on healthissues, including sexual health. The Grow Well choices were delivered forInverurie network and 6 monthly follow upswith the schools carried out In October 2013, the Bothie in Kintore, aninnovative straw bale building opened itsdoors providing young people in the areawith a safe and welcoming facility. Action Kintore secured funding andappointed an experienced artist to designand create a permanent art work to becomea landmark feature complementing TheBothie. Facilities for young people have beenincluded within the proposals for the newInverurie Academy campus. Kemnay Youth Café, based within KemnayPolice Station, now on an annual leasepending a decision on the future of theStation by Police Scotland Funding sourced from within the Council,Garioch Community Planning Group andKinellar Youth Forum to allow thedevelopment of a Youth Shelter atBlackburn.Garioch Community Planning Group
