You could easily spend a few days at Fort Ross with your friendsand family camping at the Reef Campground, a sweet little 19 site ocean sidecampground nestled in the redwoods. On thesedays visitors from theextended Bay Area and fromplaces as far as Alaska,Washington, DC and acrossRussia come to Fort Ross tocelebrate the diverse cultureand history of this earlyCalifornia settlement, with itsAlaska Native, KashayaPomo, Coast Miwok, and the Russian stories. This 350-page documentdescribes its historic significance in remarkabledetail. It describes the orchard's history,assesses each tree's provenance and currentstate, and suggests strategies to ensure thisliving resource remains an important part of theFort Ross landscape.Many good people had a hand in creating thisplan. Susan Rudy, Fort Ross Conservancyadviser and lead orchard volunteer, initiated theproject, served as project liaison, and organized the fieldwork. Fort RossConservancy funded the project through a generous grant from Renova FortRoss Foundation, an organization keenly committed to seeing the orchard isstabilized and protected. Ourseal population numbers are stable andthe pups are growing fast, already notalways distinguishable from the adults(nutritious milk!). As for our Steller SeaLion survey, we continue to meet once amonth and are carefully watching, hopingto spot a Steller Sea Lion pup.Meanwhile, as elsewhere along our coast,we did spot a young (most likelyGuadalupe) Fur Seal, not very healthy, out on our Sea Lion Rocks.
