John Adler came up with the idea.The purpose of the software is to keep better track of his flock, he said.The church has 487 members. With that many people, those who miss church for two weeks willno longer slip through the cracks.The program, Automated Church System Technologies, is based in Florence, S.C., and costs 700."Episcopal churches don't do this very well," Adler said. "Keeping track is a really importantthing."The automated system replaces the old-fashioned method of passing clipboards in the pews totake roll, Adler said.Bee Bentley collects the name tags after services. They are scanned and then Bentley puts themback on the board for the next week.The bar code system scans each tag with a press of a button, and the computer sends a list of allthose who attended to Adler.The system serves two purposes: To follow up with new members; and to check up on members ifthey miss a few services for illness or vacation.
