2Desire LearnQuickguide: Grades ToolOverviewThe Grades tool allows you to enter assignment grades, track a student’s progress, and calculate final grades.You can set up your gradebook to calculate final grades based on points or with assignments as percentagesof the final grade. Desire2Learn Quickguide: Grades Tool (Page 2 of 9)Running the SetupWizardThe Grades Setup Wizard will allow you toset up how the final grade will be calculatedand how the Grades tool will display to youand to students.1. From any page in the “Grades” area, clickSetup Wizard in the left-hand menu(Figure 1).2. Click Start.3. Choose a Grading System (Figure 2). Weighted allows you to select whatpercentage a particular grade item orcategory makes up of the final grade;e.g., Quizzes are 20 percent of finalgrade.Figure 1 Points calculates the final grade bydividing the total points earned by thetotal points possible. Formula allows you to create a morecomplicated grading calculation.4. Click Next.5. Select a final grade release option (Figure3): Select Final Calculated Grade tocalculate the final grade based strictly onthe grading formula you have set up. Select Final Adjusted Grade if youwant to be able to manually modify oradjust a student’s grade before releasingit to the student.Figure 26. Click Next.7. Select whether items that do not have agrade are omitted from the final gradecalculation or counted as a 0.Note: If you select “Treat ungraded items as0” and show the final grade to students, theirfinal grade will appear lower due to gradeitems on assignments that are due later in thequarter. However, if you select “DropUngraded Items,” you must remember toFigure 3

Select the “Automatically keep final gradeupdated” checkbox if you want students’final grade to update automatically whenyou enter grades (Figure 4).9. Click Next.10. Select your default grade scheme for newgrade items. This can be manuallychanged in individual grade items.Figure 4Note: The Grade Scheme is how your gradesappear to students. By default, they appear aspercentages, but you can create your owngrade scheme to assign letter grades. See the“Creating a Grade Scheme” section below.11. Click Next.12. Enter the number of decimal places todisplay in calculated grades.13. Click Next.14. Modify the “Submission View DisplayOptions.” This is what students see whenthey click Grades in the navbar.15. Click Next. You will see a confirmationscreen with all the options you selected.16. Click Finish to save (Figure 5).Figure 5Note: To change any of these settings, simplyrestart the wizard and change the appropriateoptions.Creating Grade ItemsCreate a Grade CategoryGrade categories allow you to keep yourgradebook organized and to set a number ofpoints or a percentage of the final grade. Forexample, you could create a quizzes categoryand set it to be worth 30 percent of the finalgrade. You can also use grade categories todrop the lowest score(s) in that category fromgrade calculation.1. From any page in the “Grades” area, clickManage Grades in the left-hand menu(Figure 6).2. ClickNew Category.Figure 6

Enter a name (required) and a short name(optional).Note: Short names are displayed in the“Enter Grades” screen and are a good way tokeep the grades table from getting too wide tonavigate.4. Select grading calculation options. If you are using a weighted gradesystem, enter the percentage thecategory makes up of the final grade inthe “Weight” field (Figure 7).Figure 7 Select Allow category grade to exceedcategory weight if you plan on havingextra credit within the category that youwant to count towards the final grade ifthe student exceeds 100 percent creditin the category. Select Distribute weights by pointsacross all items in the category toautomatically set the weight of gradeitems in the category by the total pointspossible in all grade items in thecategory. Select Distribute weight/pointsevenly across all items to make eachgrade item in the category worth thesame amount. If you have a pointsbased system, enter the number ofpoints each item in the category shouldhave in the “points per item” field.Note: You must select Distributeweight/points evenly across all items todrop the lowest score(s) in a category. To drop the lowest grade(s) in thecategory, enter the number ofassignments to drop in the “Number oflowest non-bonus items to drop foreach user” (Figure 8).5. Click Save.Create a Grade ItemThere are two ways to create grade items. Youcan use the instructions in this section tocreate grade items from within the Gradestool, or you can create grade items while youFigure 8

See theQuickguides for those tools for instructionson creating grade items within the tool.1. From any page in the “Grades” area, clickManage Grades in the left-hand menu(Figure 9).2. ClickNew Item.3. Select a grade item type based on how youwill input grades. Select “Numeric” toinput a point score or “Selectbox” toselect grades from a grade scheme.Figure 9Note: You must have a grade scheme tochoose Selectbox. See the “Creating a GradeScheme” section below. The choice youselect only controls how you input grades—not how students see them.4. Enter a name (required) and a short name(optional) for your grade item.5. If you have a category set up for thisgrade item, select it in the categories dropdown menu. Some fields on the screenmay be automatically filled in based onyour category settings (Figure 10).6. Fill out the “Grading” options. Enter the number of max points, ifapplicable.Figure 10 Select “Can exceed” to allow extracredit on the assignment. Select “Bonus” if it is an extra creditassignment. Select “Exclude from Final GradeCalculation” to have this item not counttowards the final grade. Select a grade scheme. This is howgrade will display to students.7. Click Save (Figure 11).Entering GradesUsing the Grades tool, you can see, enter, andmodify all grades for all students in the courseFigure 11

You can also grade students bygrade item, category, student, or final grade.Note: You can also grade quizzes, dropboxfolders, and discussion topics from withinthose tools, allowing you to see the studentwork and grade on the same screen. If anassignment has an associated grade item,grades you enter in these tools willautomatically transfer into the Grades area.Enter Grades Using the SpreadsheetViewFigure 12The spreadsheet view enables you to enterand modify grades for all students and allassignments on one screen. However, thisview will not allow you to leave studentsfeedback on assignments.1. From any page in the Grades tool, clickEnter Grades (Figure 12).2. If, in thesetup wizard, you did not select“Automatically Keep Final Grades Updated”you must manually recalculate the final grade.You can also adjust final grades and releasethem to students, depending on how you setup your gradebook in the setup wizard.Figure 221. ClickRelease All to release the finalgrades to students (Figure 25).Create a Grade SchemeGrade Schemes allow you to display grades tostudents as a letter grade or another kind ofcustom-defined symbol.Figure 251. In the first row “Symbol” text box, enterthe lowest letter grade that can be earned.Figure 265. In the second row “Symbol” text box,enter the next lowest letter grade that canbe earned.6. In the second row “Start %” text box,enter the lowest possible percentage thatwill earn this letter grade (Figure 27). If this grade scheme will be used for aselectbox grade item, in the “AssignedValue %” text box, enter a value for thisletter grade. When you grade thestudent using the selectbox, theAssigned Value % is the numeric valueDesire2Learn will use to calculate finalgrades. Repeat steps 5-6 for each grade range.Note: To add additional grade ranges, enterthe number of additional ranges in the “AddRanges” text bock and clickAdd.7.
