Establish Ground Rules

What is implicit bias? In 1995, Anthony Greewald and M.R. Benaji hypothesizedthat our social behavior was not entirely under our control. According to their study, the concept of unconscious bias(hidden bias or implicit bias) suggests that:“much of our social behavior is driven by learned stereotypesthat operate automatically – and therefore unconsciously– whenwe interact with other people.”Source: Implicit Social Cognition: Attitudes, Self-Esteem and Stereotypes, 1995

What is implicit bias?im plic it bi as /im plisit bies/: The attitudes or stereotypes that affect our understanding, actions and decisions in an unconscious manner. Activated involuntarily, without awareness or intentional control. Can be either positive or negative. Everyone is susceptible.Source: Kirwan Institute State of the Science: Implicit Bias Review, 2016.

Dual Systems TheoryImplicit bias is a product ofSystem 1 thinking. We act onour implicit biases withoutawareness; thus they canundermine our true intentions. To compare System 1 and 2 thinking, think of how we processsimple addition like 2 2 vs. a complex algebraic equation thatrequires conscious thinking and effort to solve.Source: Kirwan Institute State of the Science: Implicit Bias Review, 2016.

Implicit Bias Characteristics Implicit biases are robust and pervasive. Implicit and explicit biases are related but distinct mentalconstructs. Implicit associations do not necessarily align with ourdeclared beliefs. We generally hold implicit biases that favor our own in group. Implicit biases have real world affects on our behaviors. Implicit biases are malleable, therefore can be unlearned.Source: Kirwan Institute State of the Science: Implicit Bias Review, 2014.

Discriminatory Hiring PracticesMinorities Who 'Whiten' Job Resumes GetMore Interviews Companies are more than twice as likelyto call minority applicants for interviewsif they submit whitened resumes (notrevealing race). Asians removed their race because employers might beconcerned about a possible language barrier. African Americanstoned down mentions of race, such as dropping the word “black”from a membership in a professional society for black engineers.Source: Harvard Business School, 2017.

Discriminatory Hiring Practices Bias is hardwired into the hiring system and prejudice isclouding the screening of qualified applicants. “Organizations can now see very clearly that this is why theyare not meeting their diversity goals. They can’t just put amessage on recruitment ads and be done. They need to followthrough with a clear structure and staff training. They need tomake goals and then continually evaluate the outcome inorder to meet those goals.Source: Harvard Business School, 2017.

Bias in Mental Health Black people living below the poverty line experience adisproportionate amount of serious psychologicaldistress compared to their white counterparts. In 2012, despite the fact that black people were 20% morelikely to report symptoms associated with psychologicaldistress, white people were twice as likely to treat similarsymptoms with prescription anti-depressants. Even when black people did seek professional help, psychotherapists were less likely to actually offer assistance.Source: Journal of Health and Social Behavior, 2016.

Displaying Implicit Bias Implicit bias affects more than our cognitive decision-making. Research has shown that body language is far more affected by implicit bias than verbal statements - but that most people cue in and respond more to nonverbal than to verbal cues. Particularly from people in power. (Dovidio, 2002)

describe earlier published methods of creating interpolating implicit surfaces. 2.1 Implicit Surfaces An implicit surface is defined by an implicit function, a continuous scalar-valued function over the domainR3. The implicit surface of such a function is the locus of points at which the function takes on the value zero.
