To obtain results for different people with completely different wants and needs, I think it comesdown to this: everyone is the sameat a certain basic physiological level– yet everyone is totally different.”Asked to amplify on this seeminglycontradictory thought, Meral offeredan answer that was both general andspecific. “Everyone is the same inthat each person needs to engage insome form of resistance training andsome form of cardiovascular training. Each person needs to practicea regimented approach towards dietand nutrition. Everyone is differentin that background, personal circumstance, available time, physicallimitations and ability mean that everyone needs and deserves a customized training and nutrition program– one that takes into account personalPhoto by Stephanie CaitsMeral Ertunc has been thecover person for the ParrilloPerformance Press on threeseparate occasions: in 1994 Meralfirst graced the PPP cover and created a sensation amongst our readers. Her unique combination of muscle, symmetry and sultry looks made hera standout amongst standouts. Hersecond cover appearance occurredin September of 2006 and again shewas sensational, displaying curves, muscle, leanness and perfect proportionality. She has been successfully renovating clients for decades.“I am proud to say that some of myclients have been with me for fifteenyears. I train all ages and all types;my youngest member is fourteen andmy oldest member is a youthful 85.”Successful fitness professionals understand that in order to survive andprosper you have to obtain real results for regular people and do so ona consistent basis. Anyone can lurein new business, but few are able toprovide members what it is that drovethem to join a fitness facility to beginwith: significant physical improvement, i.e., a radical decrease in bodyfat and a dramatic increase in leanmuscle mass.1-800-344-3404Performance Press / February 2010

Meral went on tocompete in top competitions including Ms. Olympia and the Jan Tanaand Arnold Classic. Unfortunatelyfor the uber-feminine Meral, women’s bodybuilding was undergoing anidentity crisis, one that plagues it tothis day: competitors became ultramasculine. Meral noted wistfully, “Ididn’t leave competitive bodybuilding, it left me.”While Meral got better with everyshow, her look was decidedly feminine, natural, proportioned and darewe say sexy. The hard masculine lookthat was favored by the judges meantMeral Ertunc was SOL. Initially she was “just visiting” and theplan was to immerse herself in bodybuilding for the NPC show then moveback to DC. “I was living in suburban Washington DC when I decidedto take a sabbatical and go to Floridafor three full months prior to the NPCNationals. I wanted to ‘hibernate,’ todedicate myself completely to preparing for the NPC show. I told myselfthat this was a learning experienceand that if I could place in the topfive I would be ecstatic. Meral ErtuncJOHN PARRILLO’S PERFORMANCE PRESSPhoto by Stephanie Caits“I spend a lot of time showing clients how to prepare great tasting foods.”November, on a whim, Meral entereda 13.1 mile half marathon. “I was inMiami visiting and saw that therewas going to be a half-marathon roadrace. I decided to enter despite nothaving trained for it. I averaged 8:44minutes per mile for 13.1 consecutivemiles. I did fantastic, finishing aheadof lots of men. Inside the race packetI found a magazine called SoBeFit.The magazine was running a competition called ‘The Fittest Person of theYear.’ I decided to enter.”Photo by Stephanie Caits“Once they are empowered with theability to make meals, meals thatthey genuinely enjoy eating, results occur rapidly.” Meral had to fill out a three pagequestionnaire that delved into herbackground, her credentials and herknowledge about health, fitness andall things related. In addition she hadto send along a picture. Out of 3,000initial entrants the magazine whittled the contestants down to the top500. Meral made the initial cut andmonths went by and she forgot aboutthe contest. “Out of the blue I received a phone call informing me thatI was being considered for the finals.”February 2010 / Performance PressThirty men and women were gathered together and put through a “brutal workout” overseen by the SoBeFitjudges. The judges found it incomprehensible that someone could be sofit and so good looking approachingage 50. Had the judges alone been thefinal arbiters Meral likely would havewon. The judge’s scores were talliedand that accounted for half of the final score. The magazine readers wereallowed to vote online for the secondhalf of the final tally. “All the othercompetitors were in their twenties. Iwas thrilled to make the final cut andend up in the top twelve.” The winnerwas announced at a red carpet eventsponsored by SoBeFit. A slew of celebrities attended. “It was thrillingto attend the finale. I was glad I hadentered and happy that I did so well.”Meral feels that the main reason shelooks so good at her age is her ‘takeno prisoners’ approach towards training: “I train hard and I train all thetime.” She follows a disciplined, Parrillo-based approach towards nutrition and supplementation. “John Parrillo is a genius and his products arethe absolute best available anywhere.I use them and I insist my clients usethem.”Meral is a skilled cook that loves preparing delicious “diet foods.” Shemixes commonsense food prep withan eye towards infusing diet foodswith terrific taste. “If you hate eatingdiet foods then it is just a matter oftime before you quit.” It is no coincidence that Meral has a kitchen inher training studio. “I spend a lot oftime showing clients how to preparegreat tasting foods. Once they areempowered with the ability to makemeals, meals that they genuinelyenjoy eating, results occur rapidly.”Meral uses Parrillo nutritional strategies on each and every client. “Myapproach is pure Parrillo; eat multiplebalanced meals throughout the day;1-800-344-3404www.parrillo.comeach meal should contain a serving oflean protein, some fiber carbs in theform of green vegetables and a smallserving of starchy carbs. In betweenfood meals I urge clients to consumeParrillo supplements.” Meral has herclients maintain a food log. She periodically takes a Parrillo BodyStatreading to determine the effectiveness of the training and eating. “I create grocery lists of acceptable foodsand have sample meal plans based oncaloric intake.” Meral doesn’t wantclients to improvise. “Nutrition is90% of the battle and my Parrillo-influenced methods work; the last thingthey need is modification.” Meral hasbeen so successful at renovatingclients that she is extremely selective about who she will workwith. “I will turn down a newclient if I feel they are less than100% committed to ‘the process.’I am only interested in workingwith sincere individuals that areready, willing and able to completely commit to the practicesand procedures that I use; procedures that work every single timethey are properly implemented.”Meral Ertunc cranks out renovated physiques with the regularity of an auto assembly line. Anyclient that stumbles into Body byMeral seeking assistance islucky beyond belief. “I lovewhat I do and I remain passionate about helping othershelp themselves.”Meral ’sTraining SplitMonday: legs, shoulders, biceps, abdominals and calvesTuesday: legs and abdominalsWednesday: legs, back and bicepsThursday: repeat MondayFriday: repeat TuesdaySaturday: repeat WednesdaySunday: offFor lower body exercises, I do20-30 reps and for upper bodyexercises I do 20 reps.Photo by Stephanie CaitsMeral feels that the main reason shelooks so good at her age is her ‘take noprisoners’ approach towards training:“I train hard & I train all the time.”www.parrillo.comCardio: I love cardio. JOHN PARRILLO’S PERFORMANCE PRESSTA BODYBUILDER IS BORN: Generationshe holidays were upon usat last. Spirits were high allaround. A monster of a blizzard had dumped a foot and a half ofthe light, fluffy stuff on my town onDecember 20th, ensuring thatall-important White Christmas Big Crosby sang about. As for the Blue Christmas inthe Elvis song, we even hadthat covered with the releaseof the blockbuster film Avatar, with blue aliens in 3-D.The snow itself had indeedbeen light and fluffy. WhileI still had to spend a total ofaround five hours shovelingout my driveway, at least Ihadn’t wrecked my lowerback tossing hundreds ofshovel’s worth of it over thesix-foot fence into my neighbor’s yard (hey, more snowfor your little brats to cavortin, buddy!). When I havedone the same with heavy, wet snow, I often woke upthe next day with my backfeeling like I had participated in some marathon deadlift workout of 50 sets of 20reps.“We have have a tendency tobecome set in our ways.”It was only Christmas Eve, but I already knew what my present was– a 55-inch flat-screen which wouldbe the star of my new home theater, which was taking the place ofthe old ordinary TV room. I figuredsince usually I have to wait aboutsix months for a movie to come outon DVD/Blu-Ray to see it unless it’sthrough in the theater? My man cavewasn’t done yet. The new leather sectional sofa was going to be deliveredafter the walls and ceiling were completely remodeled – that would be mywife’s idea. But I can’t complain. Iget my ridiculous TV, and the valueof our house goes up every time weremodel something like the bathroom10something I can take my 10-year-oldson to, I might as well watch it instyle and in the best quality possible.Oh, I earned this – do you know howmany stupid kid’s movies I have satFebruary 2010 / Performance Pressor kitchen. Why, in the current realestate market, my house is now almost worth as much as we paid for itover eight years ago! The market hasto come back eventually. Hell, evenbell-bottoms did that.My sole client Jared had juststarted his school Christmasvacation less than two hoursbefore, but here he was inthe gym with me. Our highschool football team hadfinished with a dismal record of 1-10 for the seasonon Thanksgiving Day. Therewas occasion to give thanks– at least that humiliatingseason had ended and theycould all look forward todoing better next year. Inthe interest of time, it being Christmas Eve and thegym closing early, Jaredwas simply training withme as I did my own chestand triceps workout. In justa few hours, I would be atmy sister-in-law’s house forher annual party. In addition to a house packed withCubans and Puerto Ricansand salsa music loud enoughto make your ears bleed, there wouldbe an abundance of food and drink.I planned on doing some real damage there in both departments, butfirst I needed to make sure Jared gota great workout. He had his heart seton competing next summer in a localshow, and my job was to make surehe looked the best he possibly could.1-800-344-3404www.parrillo.combetween sets. Acouple weeks ago I hadfinally recognized that Ineeded to back off for aweek or two. My arthritic shoulders were starting to ache again and thetendonitis in my perpetually inflamed right elbow was the worst it hadbeen in a very long time.At first I considered aweek off from liftingand only doing cardio. That was pondered all often seconds and rejected.I love training too muchto stop even for a week.So I reached a compromise with my stubborn self. I would uselighter weights, higherreps, stop all sets shy offailure, and reduce theoverall volume. I woulddo that for two weeksin lieu of not lifting atall. That would givemy joints and tendons a“A simple change like increasingchance to heal up a little, can shock the muscles.”and provide me time todo a bit more cardio. Iwould be something I would havehad bulked up to 235 pounds in lessto include in the future was whenthan three months after competingmy biceps got sore from four sets ofat 198, and the extra weight had mefifteen on incline dumbbell curls.
