ANNUAL REPORT 2016 – 2017Photo: Natali WisemanLETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR& CEO, CHAIRMAN, &PRESIDENT OF THE BOARDThe fiscal year 2016/17 was a milestone one forthe Seattle Art Museum. We celebrated the 10thanniversary of both SAM’s expanded downtownmuseum and the creation of our beloved OlympicSculpture Park. These major additions to SAMwere monumental achievements for our institutionand region, literally and figuratively transformingthe cultural life of the Pacific Northwest. The yearprovided numerous opportunities to reflect on theremarkable impact made possible over the pastdecade by these new spaces, from memorableexhibitions like 2010/11’s Picasso: Masterpiecesfrom the Musée National Picasso to a renewedinterest in revitalizing Seattle’s downtownwaterfront inspired by the success of the OlympicSculpture Park. It was also a chance to recognizeagain the thousands of people who joinedtogether to support the projects as part of theSAM Transformation Campaign (1999–2007).Co-chaired by SAM Trustees Susan Brotman andJon Shirley, the Transformation Campaign stillstands as the largest cultural fundraising effort inthe history of our region.While celebrating our recent past, 2016/17 alsosaw the start of SAM’s next great change to ourfacilities: the renovation and expansion of ouriconic, original home in Volunteer Park. Pursued inpartnership with the City of Seattle, and designedby LMN Architects, the project will provide essentialupgrades and dynamic new spaces for communityengagement. We want to take this opportunity tothank the hundreds of local families, foundations,and agencies that have stepped forward to helpmake this project a reality. We extend specialthanks to Mimi Gardner Gates, SAM’s DirectorEmerita, and Trustee Gursharan Sidhu, co-chairsof the renovation and expansion campaign.2

Fiscal year 2016/17 saw strong participationin the museum’s robust programming foraudiences of all ages. Over 36,000 peopleattended public programs that included lectureswith artists and scholars, our long-standing filmseries, the ever-popular SAM Remix events,and lively programming in both summer andwinter at the Olympic Sculpture Park. More than11,000 youth and their families experiencedprograms that included Family Fun Days,Free First Saturdays at the Seattle Asian ArtMuseum, and three weeks of SAM Camp atthe Olympic Sculpture Park. Over 2,000 teensengaged with our programs this year, includingthe 18 members of the Teen Arts Group at thecreative helm of Teen Night Out. Nearly 20,000youth toured one of SAM’s locations this year,including a program where every second graderin the Highline Public Schools was invited tovisit the Olympic Sculpture Park. We reachedanother 14,000 K–12 students through programsin their schools and communities. We alsocontinued our work with artists and teachersthrough our Creative Advantage program, apartnership with the Office of Arts & Culture tomake quality arts education accessible to everystudent in Seattle Public Schools.During fiscal year 2016/17 the Seattle ArtMuseum featured a dynamic slate of exhibitionswith resonant themes, including Big Picture:Art After 1945; Graphic Masters: Dürer, Rembrandt,Hogarth, Goya, Picasso, R. Crumb; Yves SaintLaurent: The Perfection of Style; Jacob Lawrence:The Migration Series; and Seeing Nature:Landscape Masterworks from the Paul G. AllenFamily Collection. Beginning in February 2017,visitors were also welcomed to the downtownmuseum by Seattle artist John Grade’s MiddleFork, a stunning sculpture that spans theBrotman Forum. At the Olympic Sculpture Park,Victoria Haven’s Blue Sun and Spencer Finch: TheWestern Mystery enlivened the PACCAR Pavilion,while the summer installations continued withevocative new works: Tamiko Thiel: Garden ofthe Anthropocene and Christopher Paul Jordan:Latent Home Zero. The Seattle Asian Art Museumwas filled with vibrant art and programming inthe months leading up to its closure in Februaryof 2017. Exhibitions Terratopia: The ChineseLandscape in Painting and Film and Tabaimo:Utsutsushi Utsushi introduced new perspectivesto historic and contemporary works.This year, an array of generous gifts broughtnew depth to SAM’s collection. SAM was the firstAmerican museum to have a dedicated galleryfor Australian Aboriginal art thanks to thepioneering efforts of collectors Margaret Leviand Robert Kaplan, and they generously help uscontinue to build the collection. We were alsothrilled to add Saya Woolfalk’s ChimaTEK: VirtualChimeric Space to the African and Oceanic artcollection, an installation that was included inSAM’s 2015 exhibition, Disguise: Masks & GlobalAfrican Art; this addition was supported by fundsfrom Josef Vascovitz and Lisa Goodman, Alidaand Christopher Latham, and the Bill & MelindaGates Foundation Art Acquisition Fund. In themodern and contemporary collection, SAMacquired Willy B by Akio Takamori, the renownedceramic sculptor and longtime professor atUniversity of Washington, who passed awayin 2017. Other important acquisitions includedJapanese artist Tabaimo’s video installation Crow,and Psyche Abandoned by Cupid, a generousgift to the European painting collection made byRichard and Elizabeth Hedreen, along with majorworks by Alex Katz and Takashi Murakami.ANNUAL REPORT 2016 – 2017These developments came amid vibrantprogramming and exhibitions across all themuseum’s locations, which together saw over877,000 visitors this year—a testament toSAM’s continued success in its mission ofconnecting art to life.In the report that follows, we highlight eachof our three locations and the installations,programming, and initiatives that defined SAM’scontinued achievements in connecting art to lifein 2016/17. On February 10, 2017, as part of the celebrationof the 10th anniversary of SAM’s downtownexpansion, we unveiled Middle Fork, a large-scalesculpture suspended over the Brotman Forum,which follows the contours of a western hemlocktree from the Cascades. First conceived for andfabricated at Seattle’s MadArt Studio by Seattleartist John Grade, the original work was 40feet long and more than doubled in length forits installation at SAM. Assembled by hundredsof local volunteers using pieces of old-growthcedar, Middle Fork is a poignant emblem to framevisitors’ experiences at the downtown museum.ANNUAL REPORT 2016 – 2017CELEBRATING THE EXPANSION’S 10TH ANNIVERSARYA milestone for SAM’s collection was the arrivalof over 90 works of 20th-century art, donated byVirginia and Bagley Wright in fiscal year 2016.The Wrights’ visionary leadership and supportover six decades broadened SAM’s artisticprogram to incorporate the art of our time.This gift was commemorated in an installationthroughout the Modern and Contemporary ArtGalleries entitled Big Picture: Art After 1945,which opened on July 23, 2016. Landmark worksof abstract expressionism by Mark Rothko andBarnett Newman shared the stage with popmasterpieces by Robert Rauschenberg and JasperJohns and the minimalism of Agnes Martin andRobert Morris. The installation continues to evolveand take on new forms as it remains on view.As SAM celebrated 10 years in the expandedbuilding, dynamic special exhibitions filled thegalleries with a range of themes and programmingthat featured the graphic arts, textiles anddesign, painting, film, large-scale installations, andmore. The summer 2017 exhibition was inspired by thearrival in a local private collection of Los Caprichos,the celebrated suite of 80 etchings by FranciscoGoya that many consider the greatest print seriesever created. Around the Caprichos, SAM developedGraphic Masters: Dürer, Rembrandt, Hogarth,Goya, Picasso, R. Crumb as an exhibition focusedon the graphic arts, the first in the museum’shistory. Including over 400 works in a variety ofprint techniques including woodblock, engraving,etching, and aquatint, the exhibition situated thework of historical masters in conversation with inkANNUAL REPORT 2016 – 2017AN EXPLORATION OF THE GRAPHIC ARTS,PAST & PRESENTdrawings illustrating the Book of Genesisby living comic artist R. Crumb, whose practiceis informed by those traditions.The exhibition’s connection to contemporarylife extended into Education and Public Programs’presentation of an energetic, free openingcelebration for the community. ANNUAL REPORT 2016 – 2017REDEFINING THE WORLD OFWOMEN’S FASHIONContinuing SAM’s exploration of fashion initiatedby the 2013 exhibition Future Beauty, Yves SaintLaurent: The Perfection of Style presented anintimate and comprehensive retrospective of theseminal French designer. Conceived and organizedin partnership with the Fondation Pierre Bergé—Yves Saint Laurent, an in-depth, scholarly approachrevealed Saint Laurent’s creative practice and itsrelationship to social issues of the day throughover 100 influential garments, drawings, accessories,photographs, video, and ephemera. Educationalprogramming was developed in collaboration withan advisory board of local designers and fashioncommunity members. The resulting programsincluded a public conversation with fashion activistand model Bethann Hardison, a student fashioncompetition, and a fashion show of local designerswho worked with objects in SAM’s collection asinspiration. ANNUAL REPORT 2016 – 2017THE NATURAL WORLDTHROUGH THE EYES OFGREAT ARTISTSSeeing Nature: Landscape Masterworks from thePaul G. Allen Family Collection presented landscapepaintings from Seattle collector Paul G. Allen.Organized in partnership with the Portland ArtMuseum and the Paul G. Allen Family Collection,the exhibition toured nationally before returningto its hometown in spring 2017. The exhibitionexplores the evolution of European and Americanlandscape painting over 400 years throughmasterpieces by artists such as Canaletto, J. M. W.Turner, Thomas Moran, David Hockney, and GerhardRichter. The centerpiece of the show was a groupof stunning Impressionist works including oneof Monet’s late, immersive views of water lilies,as well as a view of Mont Sainte-Victoire by PaulCézanne. The Conservation Department preparedand evaluated the collection prior to its nationaltour and along with the Registrar’s Departmentoversaw the installation and de-installation of theexhibition at each venue. The Education Departmentexplored the show’s environmental themes throughprogramming created in partnership with theNational Park Service. Digital initiatives includeda program for visitors to make works of art inspiredby the exhibition on in-gallery touchscreens. Wealso experimented with a new adult workshopformat conceived as a weeklong landscapepainting class with Seattle artist Ryan Molenkamp.Installation views of Seeing Nature: Landscape Masterworks from thePaul G. ANNUAL REPORT 2016 – 2017AN EPIC HISTORIC SERIESRESONATESCommemorating the 100th birthday of groundbreaking American artist Jacob Lawrence, whomade Seattle his home for the last 30 years ofhis life, SAM offered visitors the rare opportunityto view his epic masterwork The Migration Series(1941). Thanks to the Museum of Modern Art andthe Phillips Collection, who each own half of theseries, the museum presented the 60 paintingsand the texts Lawrence wrote for each panel.The resonant theme of the Great Migration wasexplored by more than 3,000 students whotoured the exhibition. Community members alsoled gallery talks about their personal migrationstories that were chronicled on the SAM Blog.Public talks included a lecture by author andjournalist Isabel Wilkerson, as well as a specialpresentation by American civil rights iconCongressman John Lewis, who discussed hisaward-winning graphic novel trilogy March witha sold-out audience composed largely of regionalstudents and their families. ANNUAL REPORT 2016 – 2017BRINGING THE WEST COASTINTO FOCUSIn 2017, SAM presented several exhibitions focusedon contemporary artists from the West Coast.Portland artist Wendy Red Star received the 2016Betty Bowen Award. The accompanying exhibitionof her photography and installations examinedthe tensions among traditional Native Americanculture, colonialist histories, and contemporaryrepresentations of Native peoples. For the exhibitionFilm Is Dead . . . Los Angeles artist Jennifer Westcreated a large-scale installation made fromfilmstrips, a medium that resonated with both thelocal film and contemporary art communities. DenzilHurley: Disclosures showcased work by this Seattleartist who recently retired from the University ofWashington. The exhibition focused on the artist’sGlyph paintings, works reminiscent of the placardscarried at rallies, processions, and demonstrationsthat speak to issues of the present political moment.Installation view of Jennifer West: Film is Dead , 2016,photo: Natali Wiseman10

ANNUAL REPORT 2016 – 2017SAM Remix, photo: Jen AuCONNECTING ART TOLIFE INSIDE SAM &OUT IN THE COMMUNITYEducation and Public Programs continued thedynamic programming that is integral to SAM’sconnections to visitors and communities from allwalks of life. SAM Remix sold out all programsagain this year, bringing thousands of visitors tothe museum’s energetic evenings filled with artmaking, performances, tours, and other creativeexperiences. Teen Night Out also filled thegalleries with over 1,100 teens from across thegreater Seattle community through its innovativeprogramming; highlights included an audio guideand augmented reality tour created by the TeenArts Group and lively musical performances byTravis Thompson and Party Shark.Partnerships also continued to catalyze theconnections between art and life that are integralto SAM’s community. Throughout the year, SAMcollaborated with community groups to coproduce an array of events that reflect the voicesof the region; these included presenting the KijijiNight Festival in partnership with One Vibe Africa,and the museum’s annual Día de los Muertoscelebration, organized by community leader andartist Fulgencio Lazo. Design Your Neighborhoodprograms included partnerships with EvergreenHigh School and Seattle Parks and Recreationthat offered 18 teens the chance to engagedeeply with design and architectural principles,learn from leading design professionals, buildcritical skills, and transform spaces within theirown communities. Public Programs deepenedits collaboration with the Seattle Public Librarythrough Legendary Children, a program seriesfocused on empowering queer and transpeople of color, as well as through an eveningfocused on a screening of the documentaryStreetwise and discussion of Seattle’s homelesscrisis. SAM also continued as a lead partnerin the citywide Creative Advantage initiative,working closely with the Seattle Public Schoolsand the Office of Arts & Culture to establishequitable access to arts education for everystudent in Seattle Public Schools by providingfree professional development workshops forteachers and teaching artists.11

Views from Venice, an exhibition of vedutapaintings from 18th-century Venice, offereda special opportunity for visitors to explore apainting from SAM’s collection in a new way.The Riva degli Schiavoni, Looking West onceattributed to Canaletto (ca. 1735), was treated bythe Conservation Department for the exhibition.The cleaning process, featured on a videomonitor in the show, revealed the painting’srelationship to Canaletto’s painting practice.Visitors could more clearly understand thatthe painting was produced in the artist’s studiorather than by the master himself.Chief Conservator Nicholas Dorman traveledto London to examine a potential purchase,the painting Shipwreck Off the Coast of AlaskaShipwreck Off the Coast of Alaska, 1806, Louis-Philippe Crepin,oil on canvas, 40 15/16 58 11/16 in., European Art AcquisitionFund; Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Art Acquisition Fund;by exchange Mrs. Lew V. Following itsacquisition, Dorman cleaned the painting andhad the frame restored before it went on view.The Conservation Department also examined andtreated several important works in the museum’scollection by Seattle artist Mark Tobey thatwere lent to two major exhibitions: Mark Tobey:Threading Light, a retrospective at the PeggyGuggenheim Collection in Venice, and AbstractExpressionism, at the Royal Academy of Arts inLondon and the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao.The SAM Research Libraries added 1,475 newtitles during 2017, including 657 electronicresources, and 22 titles to Special Collections,including the Book Arts Collection. The BullittLibrary also launched the digital collectionsSeattle Fine Arts Society and the Art Instituteof Seattle Publications and William Lautz, theSeattle Ceramic Society, and the Seattle ArtMuseum. Work also began on SAM’s HistoricMedia Collection, which includes over 4,000audio and video recordings. The projectuncovered many treasures, such as audio andvideo content featuring SAM staff, volunteers,and trustees over the years; recordings ofimportant local, national, and internationalartists; and coverage of milestone events suchas the openings of museum sites and majorspecial exhibitions.
