4 RIMS Annual Report 2018RIMS Annual Report 2018 5Message from the presidentDear readers,Looking back at the past yearis really joyful, since we havebeen able to successfully rollout the activities that werepart of our strategic plan.A plan that we devised in 2017to support our mission toenhance activity, participationand autonomy of peoplewith MS by developing andadvocating evidence-basedrehabilitation.In 2018 we continued ourcore activities, as you canread in this annual report, such as the annual conference, the Special Interest Groups(SIGs), the RIMS grant andthe fellowships. New was ourlocally organised educationalactivity that we developed toreach more clinicians who areinvolved in the rehabilitationof persons with MS.The foremost aim of thisactivity is to enable thoseclinicians who are not able toattend our other RIMS activitiesto benefit from the knowledgethat is available within RIMS. Alltogether, these activities havea clear purpose: to supportthe accomplishment of ourvision that all people withMS throughout Europe haveaccess to evidence-basedrehabilitation when theyneed it.Whether it was because ofthe city, the atmosphere ofa university building, thequality of the content, or allof these factors combined,I don’t know, but our annualconference in Amsterdam withthe theme ‘MS rehabilitationacross the lifespan’ was a greatsuccess. We can proudly lookback at the contributions ofthe excellent invited keynotespeakers, and an extraordinaryand touching honorarylecture of one of our formerpresidents, Eija Luoto. Withslightly over 400 attendees wehave set an all-time record! In2018 all of the Special InterestGroups (SIGs) organized theirin-between meetings and haddeveloped very attractive andinteractive programmes, whichattracted 132 enthusiasticparticipants (7 - 62 participantsper SIG) from 16 countries (3- 13 countries represented perSIG). Also, we look back on awell-attended (58 delegatesfrom 12 countries) firstWorkshop ‘Rehabilitation inprogressive MS’ in Copenhagenthat received very goodfeedback, which clearly showsthat this newly developed RIMSactivity has merit.None of this would havehappened if I were to do thisalone. Thanks to the committedboard members GiampaoloBrichetto, Christian Dettmers,Piet Eelen, Jenny Freeman,Daphne Kos, Jaume SastreGarriga, Anders Skjerbaek;the active leadership of theSIGS, Paul van Asch, CarmeSantoyo, Lousin Moumdjian,Inger Grethe Loyning, SofieFerdinand, Doreen McClurg,Sara Rinaldi, Jana Pöttgen,Anita Rose, Leonie Ruhaak,Anne Christin Rahn, AndreaGiordano, and the highlyappreciated support ofSeauton, RIMS was able tosuccessfully accomplish all ofthe activities presented in thisannual report. As expectedit has been inspiring and apleasure to work together! It is my pleasure to invite you tolook through our annual report, because it contains a lot ofdetailed and useful informationon our activities of 2018. I amconfident that you will findparts of your liking that you willwant to read more closely.Best wishes,Prof Vincent de GrootRIMS President

The first chairman ofthe group was Rudi Vermote and co-chair Dawn Langdon. Since2001 the group was lead by Päivi Hämäläinen and Agnete Jonsson(chair and co-chair, respectively). From2015 the Chair is Jana Pöttgen with again Anita as Co-Chair.Where?Hamburg, GermanyThe idea of the group is to gain and maintain contemporaryscientific knowledge about psychological and neuropsychological issues in MS and to share practical experience about everydayclinical work in different European countries within the RIMSnetwork. The main role of our SIG is to provide evidence-basedinformation regarding psychological and neuropsychologicalimpairment in MS and its rehabilitation opportunities for RIMSmembers and other persons who are interested in this field. Ourinternational collaboration is the best platform for team work.ParticipantsJana Pöttgen (SIG Chair) (DE),Anita Rose (SIG Co-chair) (UK),Steffi Lau (DE), Gesa Pust (DE),Hans Bock (DE), Anja Behrens(DE), Thorsten Schütze (DE),Gabi Weineck (DE), AmbraGiovannetti (IT), LaurentiuLazar (RO), Jannie Engelbrecht(DK), Mette Harpsoe Engel(DK), Wim van de Vis (NL),Cristina Bungardean (RO),Mieke d‘Hooge (BE), MichellePirard (BE)The meetings have both lectures and case presentations withopen discussion. 14 RIMS Annual Report 2018RIMS Annual Report 2018 15SIG ReportPsychology & Neuropsychology Summary of the meeting Future Plans & MeetingsThe workshop was mainly held by professor Pakenham. He startedwith an overview: ‘Third Wave Cognitive Behavioral Therapy –Acceptance & Commitment Therapy’ and gave an introduction inACT (History, Psychological Flexibility Framework and Associated Research). 3-hour workshop within theRIMS Annual Conference inLjubljana on June 20, 2019.Ambra Giovannetti presented the READY It MS project thatshe is running in Italy (the study follows a phased approach, assuggested by the Medical Research Council (MRC) frameworkfor developing and evaluating complex interventions), to informRIMS colleagues (all involved in the psychological/neuropsychological rehabilitation in MS) about European research on ACTand MS. First results are available and show positive effects onresilience parameters.SIG ReportMobilityIn-between meeting forSIG MobilitySeptember 28-29, 2018Glasgow, Scotland SIG Psychology andneuropsychology in-betweenmeeting (date and time to bedefined) Currently working on ainternational validation(Italy, Spain, Germany) of theCompACT Questionnairefunded by a RIMS grant.READY (Resilience for Every Day) for MS ACT based resiliencytraining targets key protective resilience factors:– Positive emotions / acceptance– Cognitive flexibility– Coping strategies– Meaning– Social supportShe also presented the CompACT for MS project, which is supported by the RIMS Grant. The aim ofthis multinational (Italy, Germany, Spain) project is the translation and validation of the CompACT. TheCompACT is a questionnaire to assess ACT-related processes. Both projects created quite an interestwithin the group. Colleagues from other countries and centers, expressed their interest in joining theprojects and possibilities of collaboration were discussed. After the introduction Prof. Pakenham presented the ACT core components:– Defusion– Acceptance– Contact with the present moment– The Observing Self– Values– Committed actionHe introduced many practical examples for a better and more comprehensive understanding of how touse ACT components for psychological rehabilitation, followed by a role play with Jannie Engelbrechtpretending to be one of her MS patients.Discussion:Ready for MS project and the CompACT for MS project (RIMS-Grant-project with Spain, Italy, Germany)All participants (from Belgium, UK, Denmark, Netherlands, Romania) showed serious interest to participate in the validation of the CompACT. All RIMS-members are interested in the READY for MS project.More structured moments for sharing knowledge on ACT and exchanging experiences on its application with people with MS are needed, particularly to let other MS or rehabilitation centres in Europe toacquire the necessary expertise and apply ACT evidence based intervention, such as “READY for MS”,into the rehabilitation centers. All participants reported high level of satisfaction with the workshop and asked for more exchange, knowledge and practical networking related to psychological topics and especially related to AC.
