The AHAleads, represents and serves hospitals, healthsystems and other related organizationsthat are accountable to the community andcommitted to health improvement.

“We are working with AHA members to continue the evolution of ourstrategies to prioritize and address the opportunities and challengesthat face our field. For example, we recognized a rising need to addressinnovation and affordability, so we created a member-driven committeeto explore these issues and work on developing real solutions. We aretranslating our strategy into tangible, actionable tactics and resourcesto provide our members and stakeholders with support and value.”Nancy Howell AgeePresident and CEO, Carilion Clinic2018 AHA Chair“Amid rapid change and uncertainty, health care is too often discussed inabstract terms. During these times, it’s more important than ever that weremain centered around real people – our friends, neighbors and family –whom we are called to serve. Our strategic plan supports this core missionand provides guidance, allowing us to help all individuals reach theirhighest potential for health.”Eugene A. WoodsPresident and CEO, Carolinas HealthCare System2018 Immediate Past Chair›AHA Advancing AdvocacyAHA advocacy efforts center on providing a supportive and modernized public policy environment. Workingwith Congress, the administration, the courts, other agencies, member organizations and individual members, the AHA advances key issues facing hospitals and health systems such as: Protecting patient access to care and coverageAdvancing health system transformation and innovationEnhancing affordability and valueAccelerating quality and patient safetyPromoting regulatory relief

Last year we beganimplementation of abold strategicvision and plan. This strategic plan has served as our guidepost aswe navigate the changing legislative and regulatoryenvironment, as well as other equally significanttransformations in technology, science, newcare models, consumer preferences and chronicdiseases. These five commitments serve as arallying point for our field: America’s hospitals and health systems wantto ensure coverage and access for all. We want to deliver high value care. We want to provide services in a coordinated, seamless manner. We want to promote well-being andprevention; and We want patients, families, and otherstakeholders to be involved as partners.Through this lens, hospitals and health systems canproactively address issues that are pillars of ourfield. Some examples of what we stand for include: Ensuring all individuals can access and affordhealth care. Promoting administrative simplification andeasing of regulations. Providing the highest quality of carepossible, continually implementing qualityimprovement processes. Ensuring our hospitals and health systemsreflect the communities they serve bypromoting a diverse workforce and providingcultural competent care. Advancing solutions for population health andcommunity health management. Investing responsibly in innovation, which will improve care coordination andefficiencies, decrease the cost of care andimprove patient outcomes. Our strategic plan is a living document. We haveupdated this 2018 edition to reflect our prioritiesfor the year ahead, but the core commitmentsremain the same. A notable change is that we haveadded Advancing Affordability to our strategicpriorities. We recognize that, as a field, we cannotsolve this challenge alone, but we can do our partto address the cost of care. We will collaborate withother entities who can also make a difference. TheAHA will provide our members with informationand resources throughout the year to help youaddress this issue. Our field is reimagining health care delivery. Weare already on the path to our future, servingpeople inside and outside the hospital’s walls. Weare working to empower patients and providecare in new and convenient ways. We envisionhospitals and health systems as innovative changeagents in our journey to transform paymentand delivery systems and revitalize our entirehealth care system for all individuals. We see ourmembers working hand in hand with individualson their health journey. Our work, day in and day out, gets us closerto realizing our vision of a society of healthycommunities where all individuals reach theirhighest potential for health. Thank you for yourefforts to achieve this vision.Rick PollackPresident and CEO, AHA
