Bedford Christian Church(Disciples of Christ)January 2021From David’s Desk1928 Moneta RoadBedford, VA 24523Phone: (540) 586-8765Dr. David Walton,Senior PastorMAKEThe Best Year EverI’ve never been much of what you’d call a “New Year’s” fan.By that I mean I’ve never been to a New Year’s Eve party, never toasted the new year with champaign, and I don’t makenew year’s resolutions. For heaven’s sake, rarely do I even sitTHE BEST YEAR EVERup to watch the ball drop over Times Square! As far as I’mconcerned, the only difference between December 31st andJanuary 1st is the turn of a page on a multi-year calendar. But then came 2020, and all that’s changed. For thefirst time, I’m looking forward to the new year like a hungry dog stares at a hambone. I can’t wait! And you know what I’m hoping for? A boring 2021. That’s right, boring. Remember when people didn’twatch the evening news because it was.well.boring?! The headline story of the day would be something like,“The Feds inched up the prime lending rate one half a quarter percent today. Stocks were unmoved.” Thosewere the good old days. Or this.remember when after a cold, snowy winter, spring arrived with warmer temperatures and ample rainfall that led to bountiful summer crops and a good fall harvest? Good times. Now, Iknow droughts, hurricanes and tornadoes make for exciting news, but wow.wouldn’t it be nice if just foronce, the weather behaved. Oh, and speaking of behaving, what if we did the same? What if in 2021 our Facebook pages were filled with family photos, kitty videos and puppy pictures that make us smile, rather than political or social posts that do the opposite. What if in America there were no crime sprees in 2021; no massshootings, no misbehaving police officers, preachers or politicians, no riots, no looting, no offenses except traffic tickets and jay-walking. We could all breathe a blessed sigh of relief as we twiddled our thumbs, rather thanpointed fingers at each other while enjoying the benefits of peaceful coexistence. Why, it would be the bestyear ever! You know, the only thing preventing this paradise is you and me. But, it’s always been this way. Years agowhen Christians in Galatia created a community of chaos, the Apostle Paul called them out. “You foolish Galatians!” he said, “Who has bewitched you?” (3:1) He was angry because the faithful had turned from lovingone another to indulging in their own self-interests. “You are free in Christ not to be selfish,” he told them,“rather through love to become slaves to each other.” (5:13-14 paraphrased) He then said, “Live by the spirit,”and thus show the world “love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness and self-control.” (5:22) Over the last severalyears, I believe we too have become bewitched by a culture of chaos. To our detriment, we’ve been told tofiercely defend our rights, rather than satisfy our obligations. The result is that we’ve become snarky, whiny, angry and terribly divided! On the Great Seal of the United States an eagle holds a banner that reads “E pluribus unum” or, “Out of many, one.” If 2020 has shown us anything, the unity our national motto proclaims is“fake news.” Well, I say now is the time to change that.As 2021 dawns, let’s pray our world, nation, state, community and neighborhoods sink into the blessed, andsometimes boring routines of just doing the right thing. In this new year may we spend more time thinkingabout each other, than ourselves; and working to make the world a better place for all, rather than a few. Setting aside all that has bewitched us, let us turn instead to a God who loves everyone, and tells us to do thesame. Yes, let’s do this in 2021 and make it the best year ever!I’ll see you in Church!

The 2020 Advent and Christmas Seasons at BCC a BlessingDespite the ongoing pandemic, itwas still a beautiful and meaningful Advent and Christmas seasonat BCC this year.During the four Sundays of Advent, Pastor David brought a seriesof narrative sermons entitled, “OurComing Savior.” The congregationenjoyed hearing the voices of thoseinvolved in Jesus’s birth story. Two small, socially distanced services were held; onegeared for children and their families, and one more traditional. Special thanks to “Gloria, the Christmas Angel” (Karen Nichols) whobrought a special story for the kidsat the 5:00 PM service, and to allof the readers, soloists and instrumentalists who shared their talentRuth Fuller (Left) and sister Vicki Motley (right) lit the “Love”candle on the Advent wreath for the fourth Sunday of Advent.Harper and Addalynn were thecutest Christmas angels ever!Special music (all appropriately socially distanced) made the season memorable. David was not strong enough reason for David to kill Saul. David was even ashamed that he secretly cut a corner from Saul's robe. In David's eyes, Saul was the man God had chosen and anointed king of Israel, and David was not going to be the one to take justice into his own hands if it meant killing God's anointed.
