Exhibition con’t.Exhibitors were up bright and early on Friday morning to welcomeparticipants before they attended apainting demonstration by MasterSignature artist Daud Akhriev.Born in the former Soviet Union,Akhriev graduated with honorsfrom the famous Repin Institutebefore immigrating to the UnitedStates in 1991. Many of the attendees raved about his demonstration and thought it was one of thebest they had ever attended.Following Akhriev’s demo, participants had the opportunity to visitthe exhibitors who had invitedsome of today’s best artists todemonstrate their products. Participating artists and the company’sthey represented included: AimeeErickson OPA for Gamblin; JamesTennison OPAM for Savoir-Faire;Howard Friedland OPAM for Bella Muse Productions; Kathy Anderson OPAM for Rosemary &Co.; Mark Shasha for MichaelHarding Oil Colours; Nancy S.Crookston OPAM for MaimeriThe Bronze Medal in the MasterSignature Division was given toChristopher Zhang OPAM for“A Couple in Front of the HollyTemple”Puro; John P. Lasater IV OPA forRembrandt Oils; Kelli Folsom OPAfor Artwork Archive; Susan Blackwood OPA for Guerilla Painter andHeather Burton for Bryan SmithFrames.Afterwards, Jill Carver presented alecture on famous British artists, andsome not so famous, who have influenced her progression as a fine artist.The opening reception took place Friday evening at the newly renovatedSteamboat Art Museum (SAM). Thestunning and spacious museum offered each of the 250 paintings displayed a prime spot with great lighting.Conveniently, the Awards andRecognition Ceremony was held nextdoor to the museum at the historicChief Theater. OPA President JohnMichael Carter OPAM welcomedeveryone to Steamboat Springs andthanked the museums tremendousBoard and staff for making it such anincredible week for attendees! OPAwas honored to have Rod Hanna,president of the Steamboat Art Museum and Gary Suiter, Mayor of Steamboat Springs, welcome attendees totheir fine city. One of the most moving moments of the evening cameJan Peng Wang OPAM won the SilverMedal in the Master Signature Divisionfor “Composition of the Oriental”during a special tribute to OPAMaster Signature artist WilliamWhitaker who recently passedaway. Initiated and organized bySherrie McGraw OPAM and JimBruce OPA, the heartfelt tributewas presented by Casey Childswho had been one of Bill’s students and who clearly thought theworld of his mentor and friend.Next on the agenda was the announcement of the newly elevatedSignature and Master Signaturemembers.Those in attendancewere asked to come up on stage toaccept their pins in recognition ofhis/her outstanding achievement.Congratulations to all!Finally, the awards portion of theprogram was at hand beginningwith the winners of the “ColoradoRocky Mountain High” Wet PaintCompetition.With a total of 28,000 in cash and merchandiseawards, this year’s competitionincluded many of the best plein airand studio artists painting today,which was exciting and, to say theMember’s Choice Award for MasterSignature Members was won byQuang Ho OPAM for“Harmony in Black and Gold”2

As expected, thepaintings produced over thethree day event were stunningand the Juror of Awards, RichardGalusha OPA, had a real challenge ahead of him. Needless tosay, Richard did a tremendousjob selecting the winners. See acomplete list of the winners onpages 10 and 11.OPA was pleased to have Dorothy Mellin present to announcethis year’s winner of the DorothyDriehaus Mellin Fellowship forMidwestern Artists, a 20,000award presented to one talentedmidwestern artist exhibiting inthe National Show who residesin Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohioor Wisconsin. For the past tenyears, Dorothy has been astaunch supporter of OPA and itsmission, providing generous financial support every year including the prestigious Fellowship Award, as well as 15,000for OPA’s popular Online Show-John Pototschnik OPA won the Silver Medalin the Associate and Signature Divisionfor “Be Still My Soul”case.Congratulations to MaryBethKaraus OPA, this year’s winner for herstunning painting “Orange Romance”.Coincidentally, MaryBeth’s painting alsogarnered her the Members Choice Honorable Mention award in the Associateand Signature Division.The evertalented Bryce C. Liston OPA walkedaway with Members’ Choice top honorsfor his painting “Deep in the Night”. Inthe Master Signature Division Jeff LeggOPAM won Members Choice HonorableMention for his painting “Red Aria” andQuang Ho OPAM won the Members’Choice top award for his painting“Harmony in Black and Gold”.presentation entitled “Color Theory: Unlocking the Mysteries”.For the past four years, DickBlick, an avid supporter of OPAhas generously sponsored a wonderful breakfast presentation forattendees.OPA is thrilled tohave their support and alwayslooks forward to Joe’s presentations, which are always interesting and informative. This year’stopic centered around understanding color topics such as value, tint strength and color temperatures in a way that was understandable to all who attended.Saturday’s lunch accompanied aRoundtable Discussion whichexamined topics suggested by theparticipants. After lunch, Jurorof Awards Craig Tennant OPAMtalked candidly about his longand successful career. The finalpresentation of the afternoon was“The Thoughtful Art Critique”,with Jill Carver and John MichaelCarter OPAM. Prior to the critique, works painted by attendingartists, were chosen for a critique/review session by Carver andCarter. Interesting insights weregiven concerning some of theFollowing these presentations, Juror ofAwards Craig Tennant, along with OPAExecutive Director, Kathryn Beligratis,announced the National winners representing a number of various categories.The evening was not over yet, as anawards ceremony after party took placeat the Steamboat Springs Art Depot, giving everyone the opportunity to view thepaintings that had been entered in theWet Paint competition and those that hadbeen chosen for awards by Juror ofAwards Richard Galusha OPA.“Beholding to None” painted byNathaniel Skousenwon the Bronze Medal in theAssociate and Signature DivisionSaturday morning, Joe Gyurcsak, Resident Artist for Blick/Utrecht Art Supplies, began the morning with a breakfastBryce C. Thisyear’s event was held under the bigtent at the Steamboat Grand Resortwhere guests could enjoy the beautiful mountains in the distance. Afterdinner, attendees danced the nightaway and/or joined the fun playingBaggo.On Sunday morning, five of OPA’svery talented artists participated in agroup demonstration, painting stilllife’s, models and landscapes. It wasfun to be able to walk throughout theroom and watch the progress ofpaintings by noted artists: NancyBoren OPA, Mostafa Keyhani OPA,Roy Rey OPA, Jason Sacran and David Santillanes OPA.There is no doubt that each year theNational Exhibition and Conventionis an exciting event. This year wasno exception and it appears it was anoccasion to be well remembered fora long time.OPA thanks Juror of Awards CraigTennant OPAM for his time and expertise in jurying this event. Muchthought and consideration must begiven when presented with such awide array of subject matter, styleand presentation.know the judging can be unpredictable sometimes, especially when politics are involved. I assure you therewere no politics involved in the OPAjudging.
