ISO 9509 NitrificationInhibition Study

PresentersGeoff HinshelwoodUniversal Laboratoriesgeoff@universallaboratories.netDuane WildingMaryland Environmental Service

BackgroundMidshore Regional Landfilldischarged leachate to Eastonwastewater lagoon systemEaston’s new ENR WWTP –concerns with treating leachate dueto potential toxicity or inhibition withsensitive nitrification processesMES requested to demonstrate“no toxicity or inhibition” of leachate

Composite Data

Principal Concerns High NH3 in Leachate representing5 - 15 % of Influent Heavy metals, e.g., zinc – Highspikes with generally low values Sufficient storage during wetweather flow

Nitrification/ DeNitrification- 1.5 O2 Æ NO2 H2O 2 H NH4 - oxidizing bacteria oxidize NH4 to NO2NH4 NO2- 0.5 O2 Æ NO3NO3– -oxidizing bacteria oxidize NO2- to NO3-

ISO 9509 ISO 9509 second edition2006-07-01 Toxicity test for assessing theinhibition of nitrification ofactivated sludgemicroorganisms ISO Method expanded toinclude testing for“denitrification”

Lessons Learned

Lessons Learned1. This type of testing isneeded due to new ENRprocesses being used2. Only nitrification testingcan determine inhibitionto ENR processes.3. Need to have “fresh”mixed liquor4. Recommend regular“nitrification rate” testingto regularly monitorprocess performance.

Outcome of TestingResults presented to MDE and Easton Utilitieson Jan. 16, 2007EU to allow discharge of untreated leachate fora trial period of 3 monthsPresently discharging with no impact20 gal/min from 6 am to 12 midnight and 10gal/min from midnight to 6 am

Conclusions / Summaryy Testing allowed receiving approval to dischargeuntreated leachate for a trial periody Will save several millions dollarsy MES will pay Easton Utilities a surcharge for treatingthe high strength wastes.

ISO 8402 was published in 1986, with ISO 9000, ISO 9001, ISO 9002, ISO 9003 and ISO 9004 being published in 1987. Further feedback indicated that there was a need to provide users with application guidance for implementing ISO 9001, ISO 9002 and ISO 9003. It was then agreed to re-number ISO 9000 as ISO 9000-1, and to develop ISO 9000-2 as the .
