HEARTBURN CIRCULATING FILEGastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)What is Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease and Non-Ulcer Dyspepsia?Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and non-ulcer dyspepsia (NUD) are medical termsoften used to label indigestion and/or heartburn that is not related to an ulcer. The mainsymptoms of GERD and NUDare heartburn and/or upper abdominal pain as well as difficultyswallowing, feelings of pressure or heaviness after eating, sensations of bloating after eating, stomach or abdominal pains and cramps, as well as all of the symptoms of the irritable bowelsyndrome. (IBS). About three out of ten patients with GERD/NUD also meet the criteria forIBS.What causes GERD/NUD?Symtoms of NUD and GERD are most often caused by the flow of gastric juices up theesophagus leading to a burning discomfort that radiates upwards and is made worse by lyingdown. This reflux of gastric juices can be the result of factors that increase intra-abdominalpressure (e.g., overeating, obesity) thereby causing the gastric contents to flow upwards, orfactors decrease the tone of the esophageal sphincter (e.g., hiatal hernias, coffee). What dietary factors are important in GERD/NUD?Common dietary causes of GERD/NUD include overeating, obesity, coffee, chocolate, friedfoods, carbonated beverages (soft drinks), and alcohol. In most cases, simply eliminating orreducing the causative food(s) or beverage is all that is necessary to relieve GERD/NUD.Other tips include decreasing the size of portions at mealtime, chewing food thoroughly andeating in a leisurely manner in a calm, relaxed atmosphere, and not eating within 2 hours ofbedtime.Dr. Michael Murray, Natural aspThere are in truth no incurable conditions . 3744-2This Circulating File consists of the Edgar Cayce psychic readings on heartburn. HEARTBURN CIRCULATING FILEIntroduction to the Cayce Readings onHealth and HealingNo matter what illness or ailment concerns us, certain basic principles abouthealth and healing are relevant. These are the premises upon which all of the Caycehealth information rests. For those who would like to make a more careful study of thesebasic principles, the recommended Circulating File is entitled “Principles of Healing.”Here, in essence, are the ideas found in that file. They may prove to be very useful toyour more in-depth study of the specific ailment that requires healing for you.The first fundamental idea about healing requires that we maintain a creativebalance between two principles:1. All healing comes from the infinite - that is, from attunement and harmony withour spiritual source. The infinite is just as accessible and available in the visible, physicalworld as it is in the invisible realm.2. At the same time, each person must take responsibility for his or her ownhealing process. No one can simply sit back and wait passively for healing to occur. This second principle - the need for self-responsibility - can take many forms. For example, healing requires attunement, and no one knows better than ourselvesexactly what has gotten us out of attunement in the past. Often, if we'll look closely atour lives, we can see (without needing a gifted medical clairvoyant such as Edgar Cayce)what's causing our illness. To illustrate self-responsibility further, the human body has a marvelous, innatedrive to heal itself, but we've got to do our part to help. A broken bone will naturally tryto mend; however, the fracture needs to be set properly for the healing to be complete andeffective.Another important principle relates to energy medicine, a new field for whichEdgar Cayce was a pioneer. His readings consistently speak of the roles played byvibrations or vibratory forces - right down to the level of individual atoms. According toCayce, there is a type of consciousness that exists in each atom. Although most of thepassages about the atomic physics of healing seem rather esoteric, it might be easier tofollow the analogy of the attunement of a stringed musical instrument. A violin or pianothat is out of tune makes sour, discordant music - symbolic of disease or illness. Just as askilled musician can bring the instrument back into attunement, we experience healingwhen our vibrations - right down to the atomic level - are adjusted in a correct manner. In essence, all healing is the changing of vibrations from within.Balance among body, mind, and spirit is another key to Cayce's philosophy ofhealing. For healing to be complete and lasting, we must recognize and meet the needs ofeach of these three levels. Virtually no illness or disease can be treated successfully atonly one of these three levels. What's more, Cayce affirms that the human body will naturally stay healthy - andeven rejuvenate itself - if a kind of internal balance can be maintained. “Dis-ease” startswhen one part of the body draws energy from another part. One portion of an organismmay become overcharged with the creative life force, while another portion becomesEdgar Cayce Readings copyright 1971, 1993-2007 by the Edgar Cayce Foundation5

HEARTBURN CIRCULATING FILEundernourished. The result is a gradual disintegration of the body and the onset ofillness. The opposite of this sort of disintegration is rejuvenation. The readings assert thatwe are continuously rebuilding our bodies. Within any seven-year period, each cell isreplaced. If we'll allow it, our bodies will transform any problem and resuscitate anycondition. But our ingrained habits usually block this healing potential - the habits ofaction and, even more potent, the habits of mind. What role do drugs and medicine play in the healing process? Cayce's philosophyclearly sees a place for them, but warns of misunderstanding how they work and ofexpecting more of them than is possible. Any healing method attempts to create anexperience of oneness, in hopes of then stimulating a similar response in the body. Forsome people in some situations, a drug may be the best way to accomplish this - just as inother cases, surgery may be the best way to stimulate healing. Medicines can be apractical application of the one life force. Occasionally they must be very potent in theirreactions in order to get the patient through an acute illness. But Cayce from time to timeencouraged people to consider the herbal formulas he recommended to be tonics andstimulants, rather than medicines. The dangerous side of medicines is their potential to diminish the body's ownhealing work. This is what Cayce alluded to when he warned about “palliatives” thatdeceive the soul with half truths and temporary relief. It's also what he meant when hewarned that we shouldn't come to rely on any condition outside of ourselves that could beassimilated by the body inwardly. All of this is to say, take the medications prescribed bythe physician you trust. But keep in mind this thought: what those chemicals can do istemporarily - and somewhat artificially - give your body an experience of greateroneness. Healing that really takes hold and lasts must come from changing one's innerconsciousness and vibration. That happens most effectively from consistent andpersistent human effort (i.e., engaging one's desires, purposes, and will) - something thatpills all too easily allow us to skip.Cayce's healing philosophy includes other insights that can help us avoidmisunderstanding. For example, one principle states that the best treatment proceduressometimes cause a temporary worsening of conditions. If we didn't recognize thispossibility, we might give up just before the benefits begin to appear. A closely relatedprinciple states that when a body is re-establishing its attunement, it tends to be moresensitive. Again, if we misunderstand that heightened sensitivity, we might not see thegood that is slowly being effected. The mind is a focus of other healing principles. The unconscious mind plays arole in many illnesses and diseases. One example of this is the karmic factor in healthproblems. Memories from previous incarnations, stored in the soul mind, can triggerproblems in the body. Of course, we shouldn't go so far as to suppose that every healthchallenge has past-life roots; nevertheless, the perspective of reincarnation can help usunderstand what we could possibly be dealing with as we seek healing. The familiar Cayce axiom, “Mind is the builder,” leads us to wonder exactlywhich attitudes and emotions best foster healing. The readings emphasize several:* Self-acceptance. As we rid ourselves of self-condemnation, we make room forhealing forces to enter.Edgar Cayce Readings copyright 1971, 1993-2007 by the Edgar Cayce Foundation6

HEARTBURN CIRCULATING FILE* Optimism and hope. We're encouraged to expect healing.* Patience. It's much easier and quicker to destroy health than it is to rebuild it.We need to be willing to patiently invest whatever time is required.Alongside these specific attitudes and emotions, we're invited to use the creativepotential of visualization to stimulate our own healing. The mind's image-makingcapacity can be directed in such a way that we “see” the healing transformation takingplace. This is not something that's accomplished in a single visualization session. Likeall the Cayce health-promoting approaches, it requires persistence and works best inconjunction with other healing methods.Perhaps the most important principle of the mind's relationship to healingconcerns purposefulness. A person can experience temporarily an outer healing - that is,in the physical body only - yet still be spiritually sick. What cures the soul? Acommitment to a purposeful life. Not just any purpose, but instead one that reflects carefor other people. On occasion a reading from Cayce would pose this question to the person whowas ill: What would you do with your life if you were healed? The position of Cayce'spsychic source was simply this: Why correct the physical condition unless there's alsogoing to be an inner correction? People who are looking for both inner and outer healingare the best candidates for restored health and vitality. In Cayce's philosophy, healingshould equip us to be more useful to others. With this ideal of service in mind, we might also wonder just how we can bechannels of healing to others. What principles govern our efforts to be healers to thosefor whom we have concern? One principle is based on the spiritual connections that existbetween all people. It states that as we bring the experience of oneness into our ownconsciousness, it can profoundly help someone else experience oneness, attunement, andhealing. Cayce's way of putting it was, “.raising the Christ Consciousness in self tosuch an extent as it may flow out of self to him thou would direct it to.” (281-7)For this to be most effective, the recipient must desire such help and haverequested healing prayer. Of course, we can always pray for someone, even if thatindividual hasn't asked us. But it's important that we not assume we know what's neededin any person's life. For one who hasn't specifically asked for prayer, we can simply offerprayers of protection and blessing, rather than try to direct healing energies to that personor for a specific condition. In summary, the Cayce readings remind us that our natural state is wholeness andhealth. An innate wisdom within ourselves knows what's needed for healing. We shouldexpect to get well, and we should be willing to do our part to make it possible.Mark Thurston, Ph.D.Education DepartmentEdgar Cayce Readings copyright 1971, 1993-2007 by the Edgar Cayce Foundation7

HEARTBURN CIRCULATING FILEShort Excerpts from the Edgar Cayce Readings540-12, 35-year-old woman, 1/18/39(Q) What is the hurting in throat and stomach, like heartburn?(A) Too much of grease.1505-5, 37-year-old woman, 9/4/42(Q) Would it be advisable to do anything for the heartburn?(A) Occasionally a little soda water will help, or better still the Upjohn'sCitrocarbonate. This would be helpful in keeping a better balance in the chemical forcesthrough the stomach and digestive system.(Q) Any suggestion as for the diet?(A) Keep a well balanced diet.313-17, 52-year-old woman, 1/18/39(Q) Anything further that can benefit digestion?(A) These as we find will be the aids. If it is necessary, or if there is the heartburnor the inclination for belching after meals, take the Alcaroid as a digestant; levelteaspoonful dissolved first in a little water, then a full glass of water added.1102-3, 28-year-old woman, 9/23/37(Q) What will correct the so-called “heartburn” condition?(A) A little of the pepsins, or Alcaroid - these as we find will make for betterassimilation. The activities in the open, though, in the sunshine, will make for MOREcorrections than medications; though these, to be sure, would be well to be kept with theactivities of the body.As a helpfulness in eliminations we would use the Milk of Magnesia. This willalso add the better corrective forces towards keeping the alkalinity necessary.480-35, 25-year-old woman, 7 months pregnant, 4/24/37(Q) What can be done for the heartburn?(A) Any activity that makes for the more active force of the stomach emptyingitself. Just a few drops of Elixir of Lactated Pepsin in a tablespoonful or a good swallowof water as we find would be most helpful in the condition.Edgar Cayce Readings copyright 1971, 1993-2007 by the Edgar Cayce Foundation8

HEARTBURN CIRCULATING FILE261-29, 50-year-old man, 11/26/37(Q) When I took Ventriculin * with Iron it seemed to disagree with me. Howmuch should I take at this time?(A) Do not take same too often, nor too great a quantity; but at least a levelteaspoonful taken about three times a week will be found to be most beneficial - if it istaken in that way or that far apart. For these properties add those elements that supply theprevention for the strains upon the intestinal system and the duodenum that have been sodisturbing to the body, as has been described heretofore. To be sure, too great quantities - or taken so often that the body does notassimilate same - becomes detrimental; or appears to produce or does produce gastricreactions that cause - well, heartburn or the like. But taken in the quantity indicated wewill find it most helpful, and we will find it working well also with the tonic that is atoning for same. Take the tonic, though, as has been taken heretofore.2493-1, 41-year-old man, 4/26/41As to the diet:Keep away from any carbonated drinks of ANY kind.Keep away from potatoes or foods growing under the ground, save carrots oryams or turnips.Have principally the leafy vegetables rather than the pod.Fish and fowl may be taken, but beware of other meats.(continued on the next page)*Ventriculin and Ventriculin with iron were manufactured by Parke-Davis and Company until sometime inthe mid or late 1950s. As listed in the 1953 issue of the Physician's Desk Reference, Ventriculin isdescribed as a powder to be used orally, an antianemic substance derived from gastric tissue. The medicaldictionary reference states that it is derived from the gastric tissue of hogs. Forty grams of the powder wasdescribed as one U.S.P. unit, and this was the daily suggested dosage. It was used as a stimulator ofreticulocyte formation and as a specific for pernicious anemia. It was also used in atrophic gastritis. TheVentriculin with iron contained 12.5% naferon, which was iron and sodium citrate neutral. The latter wasindicated for anemia due to iron deficiency states. It is to be assumed that Cayce found the Ventriculin to be beneficial in a number of conditions since itwas suggested not only in anemia but in conditions such as scleroderma, as an extreme example. Perhaps itwas the enzymes which were present in the wall of the stomach from which the powder was derived thatprompted the use of this particular substance in the readings. It may be that the readings saw this acting topromote better assimilation of foods and thus provide the substances within the bloodstream onceassimilated, which would make for an ability to build red blood cells in the blood-forming organs.Substances which might be to some extent equivalent in the 1967 P.D.R. are Converzyme (Ascher);Digestant (Canright); Accelerase (Organon); Entozyme (A. H. Robins). Entozyme has in it 250 mg. of N.F. equivalent pepsin; 300 mg. N. F. equivalent pancreatin; and 150 mg. biosalts. Converzyme tabletscontain 5 mg. of cellulolytic enzyme; proteolytic enzyme 10 mg.; amylolytic enzyme 30 mg.; and lipolyticenzyme 800 Ascher units. This gives an idea of the relative difference between these more modernpreparations and that which Cayce described in various places. It seems reasonable that these could beinterchangeable.[Note: The preceding commentary was written by William A.
