1. INTRODUCTION1.1Brief HistoryThe PEC University of Technology was originally established as Mugalpura Engineering Collegeat Lahore (now in Pakistan) on November 9, 1921. The name of the institute was later changed toMaclagan Engineering College and it started functioning under this name on March 19, 1924. In the year1931, the institute got affiliated to Punjab University, Lahore. After partition in 1947, the institute wasshifted to Roorkee (India) and was renamed as East Punjab Institute of Engineering. In the year 1950, theword „East‟ was dropped and it came to be known by its now popular name–PEC (Punjab EngineeringCollege).Towards the end of December 1953, the institute shifted to its present campus in Chandigarh tofunction under Govt. of Punjab. In 1966, with the formation of Union Territory of Chandigarh, theinstitute came under the control of the Chandigarh Administration. In October 2003, the Govt. of India notified the Punjab Engineering College as a Deemed to beUniversity. In June 2009, the institute has accordingly been rechristened as PEC University ofTechnology. The Institute is governed by a Board of Governors and gets a grant-in-aid from the ChandigarhAdministration. The institute, in its new set up has introduced policies and programmes which are at par withthose at IITs and other best institutions in the world.1.2LocationThe institute campus is situated in Sector12 at the northern end of Chandigarh. It is a fewminutes walk from Rajindra Park, the Punjab and Haryana Civil Secretariat, the Panjab University andthe Post-graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI) .The Campus is 9 km from theChandigarh Railway Station and 8 km from the main Bus Stand.Chandigarh is the first planned city of India. It is at present the capital of the States of Punjab andHaryana and the Union Territory of Chandigarh. The average temperature during winter varies from 4º Cto 28º C and during summer from 34º C to 45º C.1.3CampusThe institute campus extends over an area of 146 acres of land situated close to the beautifulShivalik Hills. The campus is divided into various functional zones like hostels, main institute building, administrative block, residential complex for faculty and staff and a shopping centre. In addition tolecture theatres, tutorial rooms and drawing halls, the institute has auditorium, library, computer centre, reading rooms, workshops and well equipped laboratories.
