01 About“The term ‘Total Architecture’ implies that all relevant designdecisions have been considered together and have beenintegrated into a whole by a well organised team empoweredto fix priorities. This is an ideal which can never - or only very rarely - be fullyrealised in practice, but which is well worth striving for, forartistic wholeness or excellence depends on it, and for our ownsake we need the stimulation produced by excellence”.Sir Ove Arup, Arup founder7

03 ArtsIn the theatre, light creates a scene’ssuspense, romance, excitement or fear.27

03 ArtsWe are inspired by the performingarts, and Arup’s lighting designstudio can bring theatrical or musicalexperience to your project.Lighting designers are sculptors, painters and authors all atthe same time. 03 Arts‘Impatient Optimist’ by Janet EchelmanSeattle, Washington, USAThe lighting design concept is inspired by the notionof the Gates Foundation’s worldwide reach. Uniquesunrise-inspired ‘Sunrise Scenes’ are projected on thesculpture for each of the cities / countries in whichthe Foundation has offices. Each kaleidoscope ofsun-draped colours for the different Sunrise Scenesare triggered to coincide with timed solar eventsthat start the new day at the different Foundationoffice locations. The dynamism ‘Painting with Light’utilises a wide range of colours, tuned to work withthe different colouration of the sculptural netting –weaving of complimentary colours to represent thesun’s movement specific to the geographic expression.Photography Sean Airhart / NBBJ31

Early inthe design process it was agreed that the luminous qualitiesof natural light could not be replicated artificially and thatthe fundamental goal of the project was to illuminate thenew galleries with natural light for its ability to createatmosphere and drama, whilst keeping light exposureto within limits agreed with the V&A conservators. Lighting was a keydriver in the architectural design, and the unique qualitiesof glass allowed for more flexibility and innovation than atypical art viewing space. The glass roof consists of a patternof clear, diffuse, and opaque panels that allow abundant levelsof daylight to filter down through a concrete beam systemwhich tempers the daylight, shields the view to the skylights, and pushes light downward onto the glass sculptures. Theceiling system also includes ambient uplighting for generalillumination at night, and lighting track with spotlights oncustom pendants to highlight art.Photography Iwan Baan37

One of thehighlights of the museum is the open plan third-floorgallery, daylit by over 300 north-facing skylights anda fully-shaded glazed east wall. The skylights and veilstructure serve as a light filtration device, bringingindirect, diffuse daylight into the gallery. The skylightsinclude exterior motorised shades that can be used tocreate zones with reduced daylight levels through theirpartial deployment. We also assisted in the developmentof custom LED wallwashers which are used to uniformlyilluminate the 23ft gallery walls.Photography Hufton Crow, Arup and Bruce Damonte41

In 2007, David Chipperfielddesigned an extension, which was built onto the older building. The exhibitionspaces are lit primarily by daylight. The use of artificial lighting is reduced toa minimum, and generally takes place only on the cloudiest of days and afterdark. All rooms in the permanent collection are supplied with natural light bya central skylight. The four vertical surfaces within the skylight are made offrosted glass and are equipped with electric sun blinds. These sun protectionelements block unnecessary light when the museum is closed and regulate theuse of natural light during opening hours.Photography Hufton Crow43

The concourse lighting needed tobe energy efficient, be easy to maintain and meet Network Rail’s lighting standards. Our lightingdesign team proposed an uplighting scheme with daylight-linked fixtures. Natural light, viastrategically placed glazed roof panels, illuminates the heritage façades during the day. 05 StoryIn entertainment and movies alike, light is a narrative element of the set63

05 StoryIn architecture, we like to explore thisdimension of light. Retail spaces benefitfrom a strong narrative, and façades canconvey a brand or corporate identityusing light and shadow.Lighting is increasingly intersecting with video and media, convergingwith a single visual concept, and Arup’s lighting studio continues todesign some of this field’s pioneering projects.64
