The existingresidents of the island can rely on these guidelines to encouragequality, attention to detail, and by creating a sustainable theme andconsistency in improvements. By doing so, the serenity and beautycan be preserved and property values can be protected andenhanced. The style of architecture of Daufuskie reflects the simplestyle of the island as well as the surrounding Low Country. Thedesign elements that will help achieve this overall harmony arediscussed in great detail throughout these guidelines while ensuringthat the building practices conform to what is timeless andsustainable. They do so by addressing the major components of astructure’s exterior. Calling out the proper materials and execution ofbuilding walls, foundation, roof, porches, windows and doors, andfences the architectural guidelines are intended to become aresource for the designer or homeowner, not providing a legalistictool used to stunt positive growth or development.ARCHITECTURAL STANDARDS159
