The Benefits of Usingthe Architecture Toolsetin AutoCADA productivity study detailing thedifferences between AutoCAD and the Architecture toolset

The Architecture toolset (previously referred to asAutoCAD Architecture) is now included with AutoCADas a specialized toolset. It is built specifically tocreate and modify software-based design anddocumentation productivity for architects.Purpose-built architectural design tools helpeliminate errors and provide accurate informationto the user, allowing more time for architecturaldesign. This study details the productivity gains thatusers may experience when using AutoCAD with theArchitecture toolset rather than just basic AutoCADwhen designing and documenting a building.THE BENEFITS OF USING THE ARCHITECTURE TOOLSET IN AUTOCAD 2

ExecutiveSummaryDesigned by Autodesk andcommissioned to an independentconsultant, this study explorescommon architectural designchallenges when preparingconstruction documents in basicAutoCAD and the potential productivitygains by using the Architecture toolset.A set of design documents wererecreated using both basic AutoCADand AutoCAD with the Architecturetoolset, with tasks ranging fromdrawing floor plans and sections tocreating details and making revisions. The Architecture toolset provided a61% overall productivity gain overthe time taken to accomplish thedemonstrated tasks in basic AutoCAD(depending on user expertise levelwith the Architecture toolset).THE BENEFITS OF USING THE ARCHITECTURE TOOLSET IN AUTOCAD 3

Key FindingsUsing the Architecture toolset:Creation of floor plans was 53% faster. The time taken to create architectural elevations was reduced by 79%.Detailing and scheduling time was reduced by up to 70%.There was an overall productivity gain of 61%.THE BENEFITS OF USING THE ARCHITECTURE TOOLSET IN AUTOCAD 4

The StudyThis study explored nine common design challengesand showed direct comparisons of the time andeffort required to accomplish each specific task inbasic AutoCAD versus with the Architecture toolset.*The same tasks were completed up to 79% fasterusing AutoCAD with the Architecture toolset.*The performance results in this paper were achieved by one user, with expert-levelexperience, using both basic AutoCAD and AutoCAD with the Architecture toolsetand conducting comparative tests on the same sample AutoCAD project of a smallone-story village school. The tasks are comprehensive in nature. The total timeit took to complete each task using both basic AutoCAD and AutoCAD with theArchitecture toolset is documented in each case.It was assumed during the study that all symbols and title blocks needed in basicAutoCAD for the design process were local to the document. Searching time issubjective and the methodologies allowed for the quick placement of requiredblocks in the shortest amount of time possible.A detailed description of the study follows.THE BENEFITS OF USING THE ARCHITECTURE TOOLSET IN AUTOCAD 5

DESIGN TASK 1Floor plansWhen working with basic AutoCAD, a set ofconstruction documents created by the architectwould begin with the floor plans. Before that processstarts, any styles and symbols that will be used needto be created and developed: text styles, dimensionstyles, standard blocks, etc. This includes buildingobjects, such as wall styles, doors, windows columns, beams, and symbols, such as tags, used to identifyrooms and the building objects themselves. The Architecture toolset includes a huge library ofthousands of predefined building objects added totool palettes. These objects can also be customized tosuit the individual project if needed. The task was todevelop floor plans for a simple building project.Steps: Create a ground floor planAdd appropriate walls, doors, and windows as well as set out internalfixtures (furniture)THE BENEFITS OF USING THE ARCHITECTURE TOOLSET IN AUTOCAD 6

Regular AutoCAD blocks can stillbe used, but the blocks must be moved and rotatedto align with elements such as the structural grid, walls, and dimension annotation. Inserting multi-viewblocks (MvBlocks) from AutoCAD DesignCenter will alsoincrease productivity if users use them in their plans. The elevation views will automatically pick the intelligentviews of these blocks. The XREF Compare function will also allow for theeasier comparison of existing and new designrevisions of structural grids and wall outlines.THE BENEFITS OF USING THE ARCHITECTURE TOOLSET IN AUTOCAD 7

DESIGN TASK 2ElevationsThe task was to create the four primary elevations ofthe architectural project: north, south, east, and west. The Architecture toolset provides you with the facilityto create elevations easily and quickly from the 3Darchitectural model. In basic AutoCAD, the buildingplans only existed as 2D drawings, so any elevationsor sections must be created by projecting lines fromthe floor plans, like using a drawing board. Any doorsor windows also must be recreated in elevation asnew blocks to be inserted into the elevations and/orsections.Steps: Create project geometry (walls, doors, windows) from floor plansCreate 2D blocks in elevation (doors and windows)Complete elevations and adding annotation where requiredElevationsAutoCADArchitecture toolsetCreate project geometry from floor plans45:001:00Create 2D blocks of windows and doors for elevations30:000:00Complete elevations120:0040:00Total time to complete task195:0041:00Time savings with the Architecture toolset79%(Figures shown in minutes and seconds)THE BENEFITS OF USING THE ARCHITECTURE TOOLSET IN AUTOCAD 8

DESIGN TASK 2ElevationsAdvantages:The Architecture toolset can save vast amounts oftedious 2D editing time that would be required in basicAutoCAD. During this task, it was obvious that buildingthe 3D model with the Architecture toolset would befar more beneficial than trying to create the projectfrom 2D due to the automatic generation of bothelevations and sections with the Architecture toolset. The Architecture toolset also provides greatcataloging tools that allow you to ensure thatall fixtures, such as doors and windows, use theappropriate materials as all this information isalready associated with them when you bring themfrom the library into the project. Inserting multi-viewblocks (MvBlocks) from DesignCenter will increaseproductivity if users use them in their plans. Theelevation views will automatically pick the intelligentviews of these blocks, which can then be brought intothe elevations.THE BENEFITS OF USING THE ARCHITECTURE TOOLSET IN AUTOCAD 9

DESIGN TASK 3Reflected ceiling plansThe task was to generate an arrangement of ceilinggrids and light fixtures in the reflected ceiling planfor the project. To do this in basic AutoCAD, the floorplans were copied and layers that would not beneeded were either frozen or turned off. A new hatchpattern was then used to represent the ceiling tileswith the perimeter of the ceiling (and any subsequentpartitions) outlined with the polyline command.with the drag-and-drop method being used to addthem to the ceiling plan. The Architecture toolset allows you to create roomsand spaces from the 3D model, automatically creatingoutlines for rooms which also allows for automaticcreation of ceiling grids. The Architecture toolset’sextensive content library provided pre-drawn lightfixtures, which could be dragged and dropped intothe ceiling grids from AutoCAD DesignCenter with nofurther editing required. The light fittings and fixtures were created withdynamic blocks and added to a new tool palette,Steps: Draw the ground floor ceiling planCreate and add lighting fixtures to the ceiling planReflected ceiling plansAutoCADArchitecture toolsetCreate the ground floor ceiling plan60:0040:00Create and add light fixtures to the ceiling20:0020:00Total time to complete task80:0060:00Time savings with the Architecture toolset25%(Figures shown in minutes and seconds)Advantages:The Architecture toolset provides the following advantages: Automatically generates ceiling grids from existing room and space outlines Avoids costly errorsFeatures an extensive content library of pre-drawn lighting fixture blocksAutomatically inserts lighting fixtures from DesignCenter with nofurther editing requiredTHE BENEFITS OF USING THE ARCHITECTURE TOOLSET IN AUTOCAD 10

DESIGN TASK 4Building sectionsBuilding sections are an important part of constructiondocumentation. The Architecture toolset can createbuilding sections using the 3D model in the same waysections were created in Task 2.must be created by projecting lines from the floorplans, like using a drawing board. In this casethough, any doors or windows had already beencreated as blocks to be inserted into the elevationsand could be used in the sections.Like in Task 2, the building plans only existed as 2Ddrawings in basic AutoCAD, so any building sectionsSteps: Create project geometry (walls, doors, windows) from floor plans Complete sections and add annotation where requiredCreate additional 2D blocks in section (doors, windows, and wallswhere applicable)Building sectionsAutoCADArchitecture toolsetCreate building section going WEST-EAST110:0040:00Create building section going NORTH-SOUTH108:0037:00Total time to complete task218:0077:00Time savings with the Architecture toolset65%(Figures shown in minutes and seconds)THE BENEFITS OF USING THE ARCHITECTURE TOOLSET IN AUTOCAD 11

DESIGN TASK 4Building sectionsAdvantages:The Architecture toolset offers huge time savings here because: Building sections can be created automatically with similar tools tothose used for elevations Section marks can be straight or staggeredBuilding sections (and elevations) can be refreshed should theirpositioning in the model changeTHE BENEFITS OF USING THE ARCHITECTURE TOOLSET IN AUTOCAD 12

DESIGN TASK 5Sheet layoutsThe Architecture toolset offers the same sheet set functionality that basicAutoCAD does, so the preparation of sheet layouts for the project in bothapplications was similar. Once the sheets were generated, files could bedragged and dropped to create viewports of individual project elementssuch as floor plans, elevations, and sections.Steps: Create sheet set for the project Create sheets for floor plans, ceilingplans, elevations, and sections Place appropriate views on sheetsCreate a project cover sheet with aperspective view of the projectCreate page setups for plottingand printingSheet layoutsAutoCADArchitecture toolsetCreate sheet sets60:0006:00Create cover sheet (including perspective view)70:0025:00Create sheets for plans, elevations, and sections53:0018:00Place views on sheets55:0014:00Create page setups10:0010:00248:0073:00Total time to complete taskTime savings with the Architecture toolset71%(Figures shown in minutes and seconds)THE BENEFITS OF USING THE ARCHITECTURE TOOLSET IN AUTOCAD 13

DESIGN TASK 5Sheet layoutsAdvantages:The advantages of the Architecture toolset: The project model is in 3D, so no extra drafting is needed to createsheet views, especially the perspective view on the cover sheet Any subsequent changes to the sheets can be refreshed and require nore-drafting Additional sheet set tools provide productivity gains, saving time onsheet set creationTHE BENEFITS OF USING THE ARCHITECTURE TOOLSET IN AUTOCAD 14

DESIGN TASK 6DetailsArchitectural construction projects, by their nature, contain many sheetsof large-scale details. Often, a single ‘typical’ details sheet is created, rather than numerous time-consuming sheets of every individual detailin the project. This task comprised of creating two wall details: cornerand section.Steps: Create an enlarged plan view from which to take the detail viewsCreate detail views from the enlarged plan viewAdd detail components to detail and enhance detail viewsAdd appropriate view annotation on detail sheetsDetailsAutoCADArchitecture toolsetCreate an enlarged plan view15:0010:00Create a section through wall corner for detail90:0015:00Create a section through wall for section detail45:0020:00Total time to complete task150:0045:00Time savings with the Architecture toolset70%(Figures shown in minutes and seconds)THE BENEFITS OF USING THE ARCHITECTURE TOOLSET IN AUTOCAD 15

DESIGN TASK 6DetailsAdvantages:Creating sections with basic AutoCAD is a time-consuming task, especially in 2D drawings. The Architecture toolset provides substantialtime savings, primarily due to the 3D model and pre-designed multi-levelblocks in the content library. Details are created from 3D model sections where the drawinginformation is already in place Blocks from the content library provide all the necessary graphicalinformation for the details The block libraries in the Blocks palette can also be utilized in theArchitecture toolset to centralize blocks in the cloud Detail components can be added to enhance the detail viewsTHE BENEFITS OF USING THE ARCHITECTURE TOOLSET IN AUTOCAD 16

DESIGN TASK 7SchedulesAll construction projects need schedules. Thisaccounts for the necessary building elements, suchas windows, doors, and other associated fixtures.Schedules provide the necessary information to costand catalog a project. Manufacturer, size, description, and item cost can be included.that attribute information change. The Architecturetoolset content library already has a lot of thisinformation contained in the pre-drawn blocks. Ifused in the project and changed, a block from thelibrary will trigger the appropriate schedule in theproject to be refreshed to show the current details.Basic AutoCAD requires this information in blockswith attributes, and there is no refresh option shouldSteps: Add the appropriate tags to windows and doors in a floor planCreate a window schedule from the tagged windowsAdd the schedule to the floor planAny updates to the windows will appear on the refreshed scheduleSchedulesAutoCADArchitecture toolsetAdd tags to floor plan, including windows and doors25:0010:00Create a window schedule; select windows35:0010:00N/A01:0060:0021:00Add schedule to floor plan drawingTotal time to complete taskTime savings with the Architecture toolset65%(Figures shown in minutes and seconds)THE BENEFITS OF USING THE ARCHITECTURE TOOLSET IN AUTOCAD 17

DESIGN TASK 7SchedulesAdvantages:The time savings provided by the Architecture toolset are substantial: Necessary information for scheduling is already in the pre-drawncontent library blocks Inserting multi-view blocks (MvBlocks) from DesignCenter willincrease productivity, if users use them in their plans Schedules are easily created and refreshedSchedule styles are automatic, whereas they must be created inbasic AutoCADTHE BENEFITS OF USING THE ARCHITECTURE TOOLSET IN AUTOCAD 18

DESIGN TASK 8Automatic project reportsThere will always be changes in architectural projects—it is unavoidable. Typical issues that often come upare changes to the positioning of doors and windowsand the positioning of internal partition walls toaccommodate the use of the building. In this task, the positioning of some windows and doors werechanged, and the subsequent project drawings andsheets were updated to follow suit. The basic AutoCADdrawings did not contain any intelligent objects, soeven small changes caused a considerable amount ofmanual rework. Moving walls, doors, or windows meantadjoining lines must be redrawn. In the Architecture toolset, intelligent objectsmaintained their relationships and design changescould be implemented quickly and easily with updatesalso automatically reflected in elevations, sections, anddetails.Steps: Reposition/change doors and windows in floor plansUpdate drawings and sheets accordinglyProject modificationsAutoCADArchitecture toolsetReposition or change doors and windows30:0012:00Update drawings by reloading references15:0010:00Update sheets to reflect new information15:0010:00Total time to complete task60:0032:00Time savings with the Architecture toolset47%(Figures shown in minutes and seconds)Advantages:As you can see, it takes an hour to make the simplest of changes requiredby this task using basic AutoCAD. That time is halved by using theArchitecture toolset, due to the ability to refresh drawings and sheetsautomatically after any changes are made.THE BENEFITS OF USING THE ARCHITECTURE TOOLSET IN AUTOCAD 19

DESIGN TASK 9Coordination and publishingThe coordination and publishing of an architecturalproject can be very time-consuming. Architects mustensure that the completed drawings go out on time, that all callouts refer to the proper drawings on thecorrect sheets, and so on. Then, the drawings go out forproduction and even the smallest error can be costly. This task involved implementing some minormodifications to the project drawings, addingadditional callouts, and linking them to theappropriate views on the sheets. The project wasthen published from the available sheet set created.Steps: Add callouts, corrections, and additions to the project drawingsPublish the project using the sheet set availableCoordination and publishingAutoCADArchitecture toolsetAdd callouts, corrections and additions to drawings55:0040:00Publish from project sheet set20:0008:00Total time to complete task75:0048:00Time savings with the Architecture toolset36%(Figures shown in minutes and seconds)Advantages:Basic AutoCAD has the same sheet set publishingtools as the Architecture toolset. However, theArchitecture toolset does have other publishing toolsbuilt-in, which speeds up the publishing process. To save time, the drawings were published as DWFfiles, a medium developed by Autodesk as a portabledocument format. The DWF files published from the Architecture toolsetalso contained all the necessary callouts requiredto link to the elevations, sections, and details inthe project, making it easy for the recipient of thefiles to locate referenced views by clicking on theappropriate callouts.THE BENEFITS OF USING THE ARCHITECTURE TOOLSET IN AUTOCAD 20

ConclusionIn this Architecture toolset productivity study, the nine design tasksanalyzed were just a few examples of how the Architecture toolset canprovide tools and workflows to make you more productive.Project )Timesavings1 Floor plans265:00125:0053%2 Elevations195:0041:0079%3 Reflected ceiling plans80:0060:0025%4 Building sections218:0077:0065%5 Sheet layouts248:0073:0071%6 Details150:0045:0070%7 Schedules60:0021:0065%8 Project modifications60:0032:0047%9 Coordination and publishing75:0048:0036%1351:00522:00Total timeOverall time savings with the Architecture toolset61%(Figures shown in minutes and seconds)With the Architecture toolset, it is possible to save about 61%of the 2D CAD working time when compared to basic AutoCAD.*The advantages of theArchitecture toolsetBased on these nine selected tasks, the Architecturetoolset provides a level of productivity for architects thatis not possible with general-purpose CAD applicationssuch as basic AutoCAD. Because the Architecture toolsetis built specifically for architectural design, you couldrealize immediate and substantial productivity benefitssuch as the ones discussed in this paper.*As with all performance tests, results may vary based on machine, operating system, filters, and even source material. While every effort hasbeen made to make the tests as fair and objective as possible, your results may differ. Produ
