What is a Measurement System?A measurement system is the collection of instrumentsor gages, standards, operations, methods, fixtures,software, personnel, environment and assumptions usedto quantify a unit of measure or fix assessment to afeature characteristic being measured. It is the completeprocess used to obtain measurement.17

What is MSA? Measurement System Analysis (MSA) MSA establishes a uniform method to understand whatmeasurement system analysis is The objective of MSA is to qualify the measurement system foruse in manufacturing The measurement system is verified to determine itsstatistical properties, and the use of them inconformance with accepted standards, our needs andcustomers’ requirements.18

Measurement System AnalysisTo evaluate a measurement system, determine if: It has adequate resolution It is statically stable over time Statistical properties are consistent over theexpected range and are acceptable for processanalysis of control The sum of all the variables is an acceptable level ofmeasurement uncertainty.20

Capability vs. Stability When a process is out of control, the QMS must firststabilize the process Capability: how effectively a process performs Capability is a term used in reference to a stable process33

Improve Capability The first job of a quality specialist is to identify andeliminate special causes of variation Once the process becomes stable, the next step is toidentify the causes of inherent variation andeliminate them. Improvement in capability can be fulfilled only whenthe process is stable34

Production Part Approval Process(PPAP)Definition: a standardized method developed for useby suppliers to automotive customers to submit approvals fornew or changed parts to their customers prior to fulfillingproduction orders.PPAP Manual 4th edition defines these requirements.Purpose:-To determine whether all automotive customerengineering design specification and recordrequirements are properly understood by the supplier-To ensure the supplier has the capability to produceproduct consistently meeting these requirementsduring an actual production run38

Scope of PPAPISO/IATF16949:2016 8.3.4.4 Product approval process statesthat a supplier to an automotive customer must conform with aproduct and manufacturing process approval proceduredefined by the customer. The same approval procedure must also be applied to itsown suppliers.PPAP includes: Internal & external suppliers of Bulk (when requested bythe customer) and Production Materials includes service parts Standard cataloged production or service parts, unlessformally waived by the customer.39

PPAP is required when:-You are producing a new part or product where thespecific parts, materials or color have not previouslybeen supplied to that specific automotive customer-Correction of a Discrepancy on a part previouslysubmitted-An engineering change to design records, specificationsor materials for production product/part numbers-Product modified by engineering change-New process technology for Bulk Materials40

Customer Submission & Notification Customers may require different levels ofdocuments submitted to them for PPAP approval.This is referred to as a Submission Level. At various times during the product life cycle, thesupplier to the automotive customer may berequired to notify the supplier (submitdocuments/data) based on various criteria. Re-submission may also be required. TheCustomer may elect to require a PPAP resubmission or may formally waive the requirement.41

Customer Notification &Re-submission RequirementsOccurs when there is any design, process, or sitechanges for:Other construction or material than previously New or modified tooling, dies, molds, patterns Following an upgrade or rearrangement of existingtooling or equipment Production from a tooling and equipment transfer to adifferent plant or an additional location Changes of supplier for parts or services42

Customer Notification &Re-submission RequirementsOccurs when there is any design, process, or sitechanges for: Product produced after tooling has been inactive for 12months or more Product and process changes of components of the productionproduct-internally or supplied Changes in test inspection methods-new technique (no effecton acceptance criteria) For bulk materials: a) new source of raw material from new orexisting supplier b) change in product appearance attributes43

When Submission is not Required Changes to Component level drawings, madeinternally or by its suppliers, that do not impact thedesign record for the product supplied to thecustomer Tool movement within the same plant (used inequivalent equipment, no change in process flow, nodisassembly of the tool) Equipment movement within the same plant (nochange in process flow, same equipment). Be sure to ask your customer supplier quality representative.Note: Some OEM customers do require notification andapproval prior to moving equipment.44

When Submission is not Required A customer waives a formal submission (must bereceived in writing or by email by a responsiblecustomer representative) Identical gage replacement Rebalance of operator job content with no change inprocess flow. Remember! All items in the PPAP file must be created, reviewed, updated andretained, regardless of what documents the customer requires forsubmission. If the customer grants a waiver, the PPAP file must contain the nameof the person responsible for granting the waiver and the date Customer notification is required any time customer productrequirements for fit, form, function, durability and performance areaffected. Includes both product and process changes PPAP documents are legal documents that must be controlledresponsibly, including compliance with specified retention times47
