Exactlywhere Dorian may strikeremains uncertain, butstrong winds, heavy rain, andand high surf are likely.Residents from theNorthern Gulf Coast toFlorida and into theCarolinas and Georgia aremonitoring forecastsclosely. In light of thetempestuous weather, LisaTaddei educated Warren Rotarians about the history of hurricanes:For as long as people have been tracking and reporting hurricanes, also known as tropical cyclones, they’ve been struggling to find ways toidentify them. Until well into the 20th century, newspapers andforecasters in the United States devised names for the storms thatreferenced their time period, geographic location or intensity; hence, the Great Hurricane of 1722, the Galveston Storm of 1900, the LaborDay Hurricane of 1935, and the Big Blow of 1913. Meanwhile, hurricanes in the West Indies were named for the Catholic saints’ dayson which they made landfall. The pioneering Australian weatherman Clement Wragge beganassigning names to tropical cyclones in the late 19th century, initiallyusing the letters of the Greek alphabet and characters from Greek andRoman mythology. An eccentric and playful fellow, he later turned tothe names of local politicians he particularly disliked; as a result, hewas able to state in public forecasts that the officials were “causinggreat distress” or “wandering aimlessly about the Pacific”. Many began paying tribute to their wivesand girlfriends back home by naming tropical cyclones after them. In1945, the newly formed National Weather Bureau – later the NationalWeather Service – introduced a system based on the military phoneticalphabet, but by 1953, the options had been exhausted. The next year, the bureau embraced forecasters’ informal practice of giving hurricaneswomen’s names. Because America led the world in weather trackingtechnology at the time, many other countries adopted the newnomenclature.By the 1960s, some feminists began taking issue with the genderednaming convention. Most vocal among them was a National Organizationfor Women member from the Miami area named Roxcy Bolton, whosemany accomplishments throughout a lifetime of activism include foundingwomen’s shelters and rape crisis centers, helping to end sexistadvertising, achieving maternity leave for flight attendants anderadicating all-male dining rooms in Florida restaurants. In the early1970s, Bolton chided the National Weather Service for their hurricanenaming system, declaring, “Women are not disasters, destroying life andcommunities and leaving a lasting and devastating effect.” Perhaps takinga cue from Clement Wragge, she recommended senators – who, she said,“delight in having things named after them” – as more appropriatenamesakes for storms. In 1979, the National Weather Service and the WorldMeteorological Association finally switched to an alternating inventory ofboth men’s and women’s names in recent years. The lists of names, which are predetermined and rotate every six years, have been furtherdiversified to reflect the many regions where tropical cyclones strike.Names of devastating storms with major loss of life and economic impact, such as Katrina in 2005 and Andrew in 1992, are permanently retired.Among the most costly storms in U.S. history was Tropical CycloneSandy in 2012. A “raging freak of nature” is how NationalGeographic described Hurricane Sandy when it hit landfall. Frombeginning to end, Sandy’s progression caused deadly flooding, mudslides, and destructive winds from the Caribbean to the U.S. It killed 70people in the Caribbean and almost 150 people in the U.S. The NationalOceanic and Atmospheric Administration estimates that Sandy caused atleast 70 billion in damages. Though Sandy is often called an anomaly, for many it was a call to action. The disaster showed how vulnerablewider areas of the United States are to extreme weather events,
