IntroductionThe Guilford County Board of Education is committed to developing middleschools that are of the highest quality. Our middle schools provide clearevidence of how schools can be developmentally responsive to the needsof adolescents, as well as provide a sound, rigorous program.Outstanding middle schools typically exhibit the following characteristicsor components: Team organizationTeacher advisoryA focus on the core curriculumA variety of electivesAn emphasis upon career explorationAn emphasis upon technologyAll of these components are evident in GCS middle schools.The middle school years are crucial. Students are moving at varying ratesthrough intellectual, physical, social and emotional changes. Success requiresattention to students’ individual and collective needs; middle schools in GCSaddress these needs.The Guilford County Board of Education has approved for individual middleschools to modify course offerings to best meet the needs of their students.This means that not all courses will be offered at each GCS middle school.These decisions will be made following the receipt of student registrationinformation by the Middle School Leadership Teams.Say Yes to EducationSay Yes to Education Guilford seeks to helpstudents attending Guilford County Schools get thesupport they need to graduate from high schooland be ready for post-secondary success. Thissupport starts with the youngest learners andcontinues until students graduate from college or postsecondaryprograms. In addition, the program provides tuition and otherpostsecondary scholarship support to eligible Guilford CountySchools graduates to aid in the costs associated with completinga college or a postsecondary certifi cate. The middle school day includes core courses (language arts, socialstudies, science, mathematics, and health and physical education) andelective courses (arts education, career and technical education, andworld languages). In addition, each student is assigned to an advisor/advisee group (AA). Middle school students register for core courses and elective classes.The information provided in this book is current at the time of printing. It isrecommended that you work closely with your school counselor during theregistration period to be aware of any changes. Go to www.gcsnc.com and search for Registration Toolbox.North Carolina Tdap Vaccine RequirementThe North Carolina General Statutes (G.S. 130A-152 (a)) requireimmunizations for every child present in the state. Beginning July 1, 2015North Carolina requires all individuals entering seventh grade or by 12years of age on or after July 1, 2015 to have one dose of Tdap (tetanus,diphtheria, pertussis) vaccine and one dose of meningococcal conjugatevaccine (MCV). A second dose of MCV is required for individuals enteringthe 12th grade or 17 years of age, whichever comes first, beginningAugust, 2020.Introduction General InformationGeneral InformationThe Tdap vaccine protects children from tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis(also called “whooping cough”) and MCV protects againstmeningococcal disease. Middle School Magnet ProgramsGCS is a national leader in providing specialized schools and instructionalprograms designed to meet the educational needs of a culturally diversecitizenship. The district offers parents and guardians a wide variety ofchoices for their student’s education—choices that build on or stimulateeducational interests, foster academic achievement and support culturaland ethnic diversity. Students who are visual or performing artists, studentswho are interested in the sciences, and students who enjoy small learningenvironments can all find a place designed just for them. The next fewpages of this book outline the different schools and programs available toour students. Designed to provide an energetic learningenvironment with high structure, this GCS magnet program is based onfive pillars: character and service, academic rigor, innovative instruction,leadership development and effort and commitment. The use of musicand movement serves to engage students and provide alternative meansfor learning and demonstrating knowledge. The curriculum will focuson literacy and college preparation, with an emphasis on structure andpositive reinforcement. Instructional practices are designed to increaseengagement, build independence and stimulate higher-order thinkingfor students. The school will have extended school days and will havean extended school year and families should be able to commit to thesecomponents. The Academy serves scholars in grades 5 - 8.The Academy at LincolnThemes/Programs: Global Studies, Performing and Visual ArtsThe Academy at Lincoln maintains a rigorous academic program. Webelieve that every student deserves the opportunity and freedom to excelin his/her own way. Inspired by past and current educational research onthe nature of learning, The Academy at Lincoln Performing Arts and GlobalStudies programs are designed to encourage, nurture and support studentsin using their personal interests, natural learning abilities, and individuallearning styles. Students have access to a variety of visual and performingarts classes as well as Spanish instruction. Additionally, core curriculumteachers weave the arts and global studies into their instruction to helpstudents develop and reach their fullest intellectual, personal, creative andsocial potential. These methods challenge and engage students, helpingthem to build important study, critical thinking and decision-making skillswhile building self-confidence and a lifelong love of learning.6

The Performing Arts and Global Studies are integrated into all classes.Swann Middle SchoolThemes/Programs: Science and Technology, Spanish ImmersionScience and Technology: Swann provides a specialized science andtechnology program including course topics such as Botany, Ecology,Physics, Genetics, Forensic Science, and Engineering Challenge, BridgeDesign Challenge, Programming and Coding Challenge, Video GameDesign, 3D Printing and Design Challenge and Drone Technology. Thecurriculum augments the Common Core Standards with an emphasis onphysical, earth, environmental and life sciences. The strong connectionbetween technology and classroom practice further enhances the magnettheme. Students are actively engaged in investigating, discovering andapplying concepts from all core areas to real-world issues through thelens of scientific thinking skills and with the support of current technologyin magnet courses.Middle School Magnets / Options ProgramThe Performing and Visual Arts Program at The Academy at Lincolnconsists of the following classes:Spanish Immersion: The Spanish Immersion program at Swann providesa partial language experience in a multicultural setting for students whowant the advantage of proficiency in a second language. In this program,students learn science, social studies and literature (Spanish Literacy) inSpanish. Students are required to have attended the Spanish ImmersionProgram at Jones Elementary or Kirkman Park prior to entering SwannMiddle. Benefits of bilingualism include increased language and vocabularydevelopment, expanded understanding of language differences andenhanced opportunities in a growing bilingual workforce.7

Brown Summit Middle SchoolTheme/Program: Center for Advanced AcademicsBrown Summit Middle School is a dedicated magnet school that has acapacity of 246 students (82 at each grade level). The advanced academicstheme of the school is infused throughout the students’ instructional day. Thecurriculum is rigorous and intended to foster a student centered approachresulting in independence, understanding and self evaluation. Every studentreceives Latin during all three years of middle school which prepares themfor PSAT/SAT success. Due to the school’s rigorous curriculum, prospectivestudents must earn End of Grade (EOG) scores of 70 percent or higher inboth reading and math and a final grade of “B” or higher on the current andprevious year’s report card to meet admission criteria.Opportunities for after school extracurricular activities are limited; however,opportunities for advanced learning clubs and experiences can extendbeyond the instructional day and are decided by faculty and student interest.Ferndale Middle SchoolTheme/Program: International BaccalaureateMiddle Years ProgrammeFerndale Middle School is a MYP (Middle Years Programme) IB Worldschool. Ferndale will continue to serve students from its attendance zoneand will enroll 50 new magnet students each year by lottery. Students atFerndale celebrate diversity among cultures by identifying the InternationalBaccalaureate Learner Profile Characteristics in themselves and others. Theyare involved in rigorous concept-based instruction as they engage in eightcontent areas (Language Acquisition, Language and Literature, Individualsand Societies, Sciences, Math, Arts, Physical Education and Technology/Design). MYP students explore sixteen key concepts (big ideas) across thecurriculum as well as identifying global contexts that direct learning towardindependent and shared inquiry into our common humanity and sharedguardianship of the planet.Teachers at Ferndale plan interdisciplinary units of study both horizontallyand vertically with the end result in mind. Opportunities are provided forstudents to participate in global studies and service learning which inspirestudents to be active learners, well-rounded individuals and world citizens.The staff at Ferndale Middle School is committed to providing a safe,purposeful learning environment for all students. As a result, our studentswill become responsible, contributing citizens within their home communityas well as our diverse world.8

Theme/Program: International Baccalaureate World SchoolMYP (Middle Years Programme)Otis L. Hairston, Sr. Middle School is a MYP (Middle Years Programme) IBschool. Hairston Middle will continue to serve students from its attendancezone and will enroll 150 new magnet students each year by magnetapplication. Students at Hairston celebrate diversity among cultures byidentifying the International Baccalaureate Learner Profile Characteristicsin themselves and others. They are involved in rigorous concept-basedinstruction as they engage in eight content areas (Language A, LanguageB, Humanities, Sciences, Math, Arts, Physical Education and Technology).MYP students explore sixteen key concepts (big ideas) across thecurriculum as well as identifying global contexts that direct learning towardindependent and shared inquiry into our common humanity and sharedguardianship of the planet.Teachers at Hairston plan interdisciplinary units of study both horizontallyand vertically with the end result in mind. Opportunities for students toparticipate in global studies include units such as Cultural Awareness,the election process and the eradication of poverty. The staff at Otis L.Hairston, Sr. Middle School is committed to providing a safe, purposefullearning environment for all students. As a result, our students will becomeresponsible, contributing citizens within their home community as well asour diverse world.All Hairston students participate in a variety of Service Learning projectsthat reach beyond the school and impact the world community. Studentsare encouraged to assist in the creation and implementation of serviceoriented activities while at the same time emphasizing the importanceof reflection on a personal and academic level. These Service Learningprojects inspire students to be active learners, well-rounded individualsand world citizens. Students are taught to be dynamic learners who gainpractical experience while being part of an international community.Middle School Magnets / Options ProgramOtis L. Hairston, Sr. Middle SchoolThe Doris Henderson Newcomers SchoolTheme/Program: English Language LearningGCS is proud of its diversity. Across the district, GCS students speak morethan 100 languages and dialects. Approximately 6,000 English languagelearners are enrolled in GCS, and we expect those numbers to increase.When we strive to provide an environment that meets the needs of Englishlanguage learners, we give these students a better opportunity for success.The Doris Henderson Newcomers School is designed for students ingrades 3 through 12 who have recently arrived in the United States andare considered novices on the North Carolina language test. The goal ofthe school and its staff is to accelerate literacy skills and prepare Englishlanguage learners to bridge the gap between a newcomer setting and theassigned school.9

Students generally attend the school for one year, but may attend for alonger or shorter time depending on individual achievement and progress.When students arrive at the school, they are assessed to determine theiracademic and language skills and are placed into classrooms that bestmeet their needs. The Doris Henderson Newcomers School also providesadult English language instruction, K-12 tutoring, babysitting and familyoutings on Saturdays. At least one member of each family is encouragedto participate.The school consists of highly qualified teachers and additional supportstaff. Instruction includes English language, math, writing, science, socialstudies and computer skills. Counselors and teachers work with students inorder to ease the transition to their new culture and environment. The staffassists with community connections, health outreach programs and studentcounseling. Field trips are essential to creating positive social experiencesand building background knowledge of the community. Students visit localsites, such as the University of North Carolina Greensboro, North CarolinaA&T State University, Guilford College, Bennett College for Women, policestations, fire departments, banks, the North Carolina Zoo, parks, librariesand museums, as well as local governmental departments.Prior to completing the program at the Doris Henderson Newcomers School,teachers and counselors develop a plan for transitioning students to theirassigned schools. Once the student enrolls in the assigned school, socialworkers conduct follow-up sessions with families.To enroll or obtain information, please call the Doris Henderson NewcomersSchool at (336)316-5883.Johnson Street K-8 Magnet SchoolThemes/Programs: Global Studies, Extended YearJohnson Street Global Studies Extended-Year K-8 Magnet School offersa unique approach to address the needs of its students. The internationalfocus of the global studies program will prepare students to be active,knowledgeable citizens of a global society. Through their international studies,they will learn to understand how their actions as individuals impact thelarger community of their classroom, their school, our country and our world,just as the actions of a single country impact the entire globe. Students willalso learn why it is important to know and understand what is happeningaround the world by studying the history of each country and focusing oncurrent events. Most importantly, they will learn to genuinely respect andaccept the differences that make people and their cultures unique. Learningthese lessons is a clear advantage for all students in today’s world.10

Penn-Griffin School for the ArtsThemes/Programs: Performing and Visual ArtsIn addition to traditional core courses, Penn-Griffin School for the Arts offerselective courses in eight arts disciplines: Band, Chorus, Dance, Guitar,Orchestra, Piano, Theatre and Visual Arts. Unique to Penn-Griffin is theopportunity for students to journey through the arts in one school fromsixth through twelfth grade. (NOTE: High School acceptance is based ona comprehensive application process including academics, audition, andan interview.)
