PREFACEIn 1999, OCP released Spirit & Song: A Seeker’s Guide for Liturgy and Prayer as a worshipresource for parish youth ministries, Catholic schools, college campuses, and retreatcenters because we recognized somethingnew was happening within Catholic music. The Church had enjoyed the invaluablecontribution of worship music from the1970s and 1980s and found a beloved repertoire. Yet, something new was rising upfrom the new fervor found in youth ministrymovements. Parish youth minister SteveAngrisano, retreat leader Jesse Manibusan, diocesan director of youth ministry TomTomaszek, and Life Teen national director ofmusic Tom Booth were writing songs fromtheir experience of working with youth andyoung adults. OCP recognized these newexpressions for worship as a movement ofthe Holy Spirit and developed Spirit & Songas a single resource for these songs.Today, we Catholics find ourselves on thecusp of a new era that is being propelledby the October 11, 2012–November 24,2013 Year of Faith; it is the era of the NewEvangelization. Pope John Paul II introducedthe idea of re-awakening the faith of peopleand nations who have a Catholic heritagebut whose faith has been weakened. In describing the New Evangelization, he spoke of anew fervor for spreading the gospel throughnew methods and with new expressions. Webelieve that Spirit & Song possesses thesethree criteria.OCP’s mission is to bring the Gospel ofJesus Christ to all, primarily through thepublication of the highest-quality worshipprograms and spiritually-enriching music.By definition we have an evangelistic mission. This mission has enjoined a new fervorfor spreading the gospel in the Spirit & Songsongwriters. To open the Second Vatican Council, PopeJohn XXIII said, “What is needed is that thiscertain and immutable doctrine, to whichthe faithful owe obedience, be studiedafresh and reformulated in contemporaryterms.” There is a two-fold charge contained within these words: first, fidelityto the immutable faith and second, newexpressions of that faith. We have takengreat care to ensure the theological accuracy and integrity of the songs. Thoseholding advanced degrees in Catholic theology served on the selection committeeand after the selections were made, anoutside group of theologians reviewedthe selections to ensure their authenticadherence to the ancient Catholic faith. The repertoire draws from four sources:1) traditional hymns that have beenarranged for contemporary ensembles,2) enduring titles written in the 1970sand 1980s, 3) songs by today’s contemporary Catholic songwriters, 4) and songsby our Evangelical brothers and sisters.Regardless of source, each song has beenvetted for its adherence to the Church’simmutable doctrine. In this songbookyou will find Mass settings of the Ordinary from the third English edition of theRoman Missal. Two of these settings are revisions of familiar favorites: Mass of a JoyfulHeart and Mass of St. Timothy. In additionto these contemporary classics, the newlycomposed settings of Mass of Renewal byCurtis Stephan, Mass of Saint Ann by EdBolduc, and the debut of Mass of the Desert by Tom Booth are included. Verbatimsettings of the Common Psalms from theLectionary are also found in this resource. You will find songs for use during theLiturgy of the Hours. There are songs forthe seasons: Advent, Christmas, Lent, HolyWeek, Easter, Pentecost and Ordinary Time.Titles have been selected for specific sacramental celebrations: sacraments of Confirmation, Reconciliation, Marriage, and theAnointing of the Sick. Communities will alsofind music for the Rite of Christian Burial, the Feast of Christ the King, Marian solemnities, and a host of other special occasions. These new expressions demonstratethat the living faith of the Catholic Churchis ever ancient and ever new.

Spirit & Song is also a pastoral resourcethat recognizes the many situations andlocations in which people will gather forprayer and worship. Because of the mobilityof today’s pastoral musician we have developed new methods for using the repertoire.Through an online subscription, subscriberswill have access to all of the accompaniments and to the recording library for therepertoire. In addition to having access tothe music, the subscription includes thelicensing rights to reproduce the music foryour ensemble and reproduce the lyrics orassembly versions for your congregation. In both the songs and in the delivery methods, we believe that Spirit & Song is the worship resource for the New Evangelization. We thank all of those who helped to bringSpirit & Song to you. We especially want tothank John Limb, OCP’s publisher. To beginthis preface we recounted the history of themusic found in this book. It was John Limbwho did something no other Catholic musicpublisher did. He recognized that it was amovement of the Holy Spirit and with greatboldness wanted to make these songsmore accessible to the Church. AlongsideJohn Limb, gratitude must be paid to DaveIsland, Tom Tomaszek, and Steve Angrisanofor taking a brainy idea and making it anincarnate resource. For this current book, the support of Vic Cozzoli, the Chief Products Officer, Eric Schumock, the Directorof Music Development and Outreach, andLaure Krupp, the Manager of Music Outreach, provided much-needed support. Theselection committee of Angela WesthoffJohnson, Eric Schumock, Ken Canedo, TomTomaszek, Rick Modlin, and Robert Feduccialabored and prayed through the entire catalog of songs; made difficult choices, andultimately forged a repertoire that will be ablessing to the Church. We are grateful toRev. Godfrey Mullen, OSB, Dr. Deacon OwenCummings, and Dr. Diana Dudoit-Raiche fortheir theological expertise. OCP’s portfoliomanagement and editorial staffs workedlong hours, Joanne Osborn, Regina Moody,Angela Westhoff-Johnson, Amanda Weller,Scot Crandal, Angelyn Jáuregui, CraigKingsbury, Joseph Muir, Travis Powers, andJon Stuber.Tia Regan, Lars Campbell, Scott Hall, LauraKantor, Christy Kuiken, Dan Partridge,Melissa Schmidt, and Bill Straub createdthe beautiful engravings and typography.Spirit & Song has committed itself to highquality recordings: we are thankful to DeanBaskerville and Jeramy Burchett, JoshBlakesley, Ed Bolduc, Marc Byrd and SteveHindalong, Scot Crandal, Sarah Hart, BrianHumphrey, Ken Lewis and Scott Dente,Robbie Seay, Curtis Stephan, and mostespecially Tom Booth who is both a pioneerand ongoing workhorse for contemporaryCatholic music. We are deeply gratefulto Kevin Walsh, James Denman, and MikeMoore for both coordinating and mastering a vast collection of songs. Paul Raspaand Francisco Gadea created a unique online collection of Spirit & Song music. Nowall the accompaniments and recordings willbe available digitally on a subscription basis. Judy Urben brings a fresh approachto all of her design work and has the skillto show that Spirit & Song is at the sametime new and rooted, youthful and mature, innovative and familiar. Leanna Nudo,Monica Germano, and Shirley McKenna issued new contracts, sought permission, and managed all the legalities related tothis collection. Still in all, our entire organization would have nothing to create if itwere not for the finest group of contemporary songwriters that are blessing theChurch. We are grateful for their ardor forthe Lord and His Church and for their HolySpirit-inspired creativity that brings newexpression to the Christian faith. We are praying for you! We created thisbook so that youth and young adults canenter more deeply into the worship of theFather through the Son in the communionof the Holy Spirit. It is our deepest desirethat you use this book to do exactly that. This is our purpose. This is our prayer.Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, ApostlesJune 29, 2013, Year of FaithRick ModlinManager of Music DevelopmentRobert Feduccia, Jr.General Manager, Spirit & Song
