WVNLANEWSWest Virginia Nursery & Landscape Association, Inc.www.wvnla.orgMay 2010Summer Bulbs a Blast!Consider planting summer bulbs forspectacular color throughout the summer. Aswith spring bulbs, the summer varieties canbe planted in existing beds, rock gardens, containers, and along walks. Summer bulbsalso look great massed for a bright, strongappearance in the landscape.Cannas (dwarf and regular size)Gladiolus (dwarf and regular size)Caladiums (morning sun/afternoon shade)DahliasAlliumsAsian LiliesAgapanthus (winter indoors)Calla liliesFrittalariaRemember to plant the summer bulbs afterthe danger of frost has passed. Also rememberto add soil amendments to the existing soil forsuccessful flower production.Moving Firewood? The Emerald Ash Borer (EAB), an exotic beetle native to Asia, was fist found in West Virginiain Fayette County in October, 2007. At this time Fayette County was placed under an intrastatequarantine prohibiting the movement of any unprocessed Ash out of county without a complianceagreement from the state. Shortly after in May of 2009 the Emerald Ash Borer was found in MorganCounty thanks to a call from a concerned home owner. Morgan County was placed under anintrastate quarantine at that time. In August of 2009 the West Virginia Department of Agriculturehad another positive EAB find in Roane County, WV. At this time it was decided due to the locationof the find and the difficulty to regulate this area that the quarantine would be changed from anintrastate quarantine to an interstate Federal quarantine. This means that Ash Nursery Stock, otherunprocessed ash products, and hardwood firewood can now be moved throughout the state of WestVirginia freely with out penalty as long as it stays within state’s borders. The West Virginia Department of Agriculture is still asking people to (continued on page 2)Tidbits, Updates, Etc. (Moving Firewood?) Please Don’t MoveFirewood! Tree-killing insects and diseases canlurk in firewood. These insects and diseasescan't move far on their own, but when peoplemove firewood they can jump hundreds ofmiles. New infestations destroy our forests.Gather or purchase your firewood locally.Jody WilsonPlant Regulatory OfficerWest Virginia Department of AgricultureEmerald Ash BorerSpice Up ExistingPlanting BedsTired of using the same plants in existingplanting beds? Think Unique in SideYard UsageMost residents have side yards that gounused or aren't part of the total overallappearance of the site. Instead of ignoring thisgreat space, why not create a separate gardenexperience or create a great storage area that canhelp with the clutter in the back yard.As with any landscape project, determine thepriority of the need, views of the space, sitedictation in relation to sun/shade, soil moisture,public/private space. If the decision has been made to turn it into agarden, consider extending an existing plantingbed or shrub border into the space. Rememberto relate the new planting garden with existinggardens by the use of the same plants, colors, textures or shapes. If the space needs atransition from public to private space, considerseveral sections of fencing for an immediatechange, or a natural change by planting anevergreen hedge approximately 15'-20' outfrom the house. Pull the plants out from thefoundation so it doesn't crowd the lower side ofthe house. The client can enjoy a meandering, curvilinear path with the installation ofpavers, pea gravel, or flagstone. Mondo Grass, groundcovers, stepables (Mack, can you checkthe spelling) can also enhance the new path.Remember to create textural planting massesand color contrasts in small spaces. If the priority has been made thatorganizational space is needed instead of a newgarden area, consider assisting the client withrequired changes. First, does the space needto be screened and secured for storage usage?Nothing is worse than to see a cluttered yardwith ladders, wheel barrows, toys, bikes, etc.Second, the space needs to be easily accessiblefor the client. How are they going to access thisnew organized space? Is there enoughroom for a storage shed, storage bin, or can astorage unit be designedby you that can beplaced under an eaveso it isn't viewed from awindow?Consider placingsome type of hardscapematerial down on theground. Bark mulchchips and pine needlesSimple storage or.works well for path materials. Pieces of levelstones found along a road can also be placed onthe ground so equipment and tools aren't placedon the ground. next columnAlong with storage, this is a great place tocreate a work space. A potting table with storagespace for pots, hand tools, and hoses, can easilybe placed in this functional space.Sassy! The storage shed as more.Another SuccessfulMANTSMANTS continues to be the January hotspotfor green buyers and shoppers. WVNLANEWSP.O. Box 20284Charleston, West Virginia 25362Splash It Up With LowMaintenance PlantsNow is the perfect time to energize anexisting planting bed with some fresh, lowmaintenance plants. Consider placing thesenew colorful plants where they will be viewedevery day. If the space is viewed from adistance, massing of one particular plant willhave a bigger impact than just one or twoplants. If the location is above a wall, considerthe plant based on texture and color. Alsoconsider plants that contrast with anothervariety, whether by colors (purple and yellow),or leaf size (small detailed leaves in contrastwith large rounded or spiky leaves).Brazillian Verbena and Hypericum contrastwell in a sunny, well-drained existing bed.Marguerite Daisies, Purple Wave Petunias andSweet Alyssum contrast well with flower sizeand color.Snowbank Boltonia, Firecracker Penstemon, and Sunny Border Blue Speedwell add coloredtexture to a sunny location.Smaller-sized plants such as Madagascarperiwinkle (red or pink), Dwarf Zinnias, Creeping Variegated Thyme, and Dianthuswork well together above a wall.Kangaroo Paw (annual in WV), Coleus,Carex, Impatiens (pink, red, and white), andHummingbird Mint brighten up a sunnymorning, shady afternoon location.Hakonechloa, Tree Peony, AngelwingBegonia, PJM Rhododendron and Brunnera orBlue Siegboldiana Hostas will dazzle viewerswith texturecontrasts and sizecontrasts.Remember toassess the growingconditions of thespace-lighting,moisture andnutrient levels. The site willdictate what willbe successfuland work for theselected location. 6Kangaroo Paw
