IntroductionWARNINGSee the Important Safety and Product Information guide in theproduct box for product warnings and other importantinformation.Device OverviewMaximizing Battery LifeYou can do several things to extend the life of the batteries. Reduce the backlight brightness (Adjusting the BacklightBrightness, page 6). Reduce the backlight timeout (Display Settings, page 8). Use battery save mode (Turning On Battery Save Mode,page 1). Decrease the map drawing speed (Map Settings, page 4). Turn off GLONASS (GPS and Other Satellite Systems,page 6).Turning On Battery Save ModeYou can use battery save mode to prolong the battery life.NOTE: Battery save mode is available only for eTrex 30/30xdevices.Select Setup Display Battery Save On.In battery save mode, the screen shuts off when the backlighttimes out. You can select to turn on the screen.Long-Term StorageBack key. Press to return to the previous menu.When you do not plan to use the device for several months,remove the batteries. Stored data is not lost when batteries areremoved.Thumb Stick controller. Move directionally to scroll or highlight anitem. Press to select an item.Turning On the DeviceZoom keys. Press to zoom in and out.Menu key. Press to open the menu for a page. Press twice to returnto the main menu.Press to adjust the backlight. Hold to turn the device on or off.Mini-USB port (under weather cap).Battery cover.Battery cover locking ring.Mounting spine.Battery InformationWARNINGThe temperature rating for the device may exceed the usablerange of some batteries. Alkaline batteries can rupture at hightemperatures.NOTICEAlkaline batteries lose a significant amount of their capacity asthe temperature decreases. Use lithium batteries whenoperating the device in below freezing conditions.Installing AA BatteriesThe handheld device operates on two AA batteries (notincluded). Use NiMH or lithium batteries for best results.1 Turn the D-ring counter-clockwise, and pull up to remove thecover.2 Insert two AA batteries, observing polarity.Hold.Acquiring Satellite SignalsIt may take 30 to 60 seconds to acquire satellite signals.1 Go outdoors to an open area.2 If necessary, turn on the device.3 Wait while the device searches for satellites.flashes while the device determines your location.shows the satellite signal strength.Turning On the BacklightSelect any key to turn on the backlight.The backlight turns on automatically when alerts andmessages are displayed.Opening the Main MenuThe main menu gives you access to tools and setup screens forwaypoints, activities, routes, and more (Additional Main MenuTools, page 5).From any page, select menu twice.Waypoints, Routes, and TracksWhere To? Whenaveraging, the device takes several readings at the samelocation and uses the average value to provide more accuracy.1 Select Waypoint Manager.2 Select a waypoint.3 Select menu Average Location.4 Move to the waypoint location.5 Select Start.6 Follow the on-screen instructions.7 When the confidence status bar reaches 100%, select Save.For best results, collect four to eight samples for the waypoint,waiting at least 90 minutes between samples.RoutesA route is a sequence of waypoints or locations that leads you toyour final destination.Creating a Route1 Select Route Planner Create Route Select First Point.22345Select a category.Select the first point in the route.Select Use.Select Select Next Point to add additional points to theroute.6 Select back to save the route.Viewing a Route on the Map1 Select Route Planner.2 Select a route.3 Select View Map.Navigating a Saved Route1 Select Where To? The track log containsinformation about points along the recorded path, including time,location, and elevation for each point.Recording Track Logs1 From the Main Menu, select Setup Tracks Track Log.2 Select Record, Do Not Show or Record, Show On Map.If you select Record, Show On Map, a line on the mapindicates your track.Waypoints, Routes, and Tracks

To record tracks at a specified distance, select Distance. To record tracks at a specified time, select Time.5 Select Recording Interval.6 Complete an action: If you selected Auto for the Record Method, select anoption to record tracks more or less often.NOTE: Using the Most Often interval provides the most trackdetail, but fills up the device memory quicker.
