The testingof early prototypes of various configurations ofrestraints on large diameter PVC pipe indicated that arestraint device must be capable of consistently andreliably gripping the pipe. If not, the restraint can slipunder pressure, resulting in a sudden impact, andcause the pipe to burst. Armed with this backgroundknowledge and an appreciation for the capabilities ofPVC pipe, EBAA purposefully deviated from what manyin the industry once considered to be the ‘only’ way togrip PVC pipe. This led to development of the Series2000PV MEGALUG Mechanical Joint Restraint for PVCpipe.The design of the 2000PV incorporates the grippingmechanism into the design of the mechanicaljoint gland and utilizes a simple two part assemblyprocess. The first step involves assembling thejoint the same as any standard mechanical joint.The assembly procedure we recommend is thatestablished in AWWA C600. The second is theactuation of the restraint.

Three Testing MethodsThe design philosophy behindthe 2000PV joint restraint is thatthe pipe with the restraint shouldbe capable of being tested to thesame minimum requirementsof the pipe alone. In doing so,the restraint is shown to haveno detrimental effect on thepipe and will have the samepressure rating and safety factoras the pipe on which it is used.To that end the 2000PV hasbeen subjected to hundreds ofstatic and cyclic pressure teststo demonstrate the performanceand reliability of the restraint.One of the primary tests of PVC isits quick burst strength. For pipemeeting the requirements of AWWAC900, AWWA C905 and ASTM2241, the minimum quick burstrequirement for the hoop stress is6,400 PSI. For DR18, pipe pressureis 755 PSI.The second test is sustainedpressure test at a hoop stress of4,200 PSI. For DR18 pipe, thatpressure is 500 PSI.Third, a conservative cyclic pressuresurge design for the pipe exists inthe form of Vinson Equation.The 2000PV restraint has beentested to over one million cycles tothe peak pressures predicted by theVinson Equation for that number ofcycles.Series 2000PVTakes the LoadOn April 11, 1997 EBAA Iron performed a remarkable force demonstrationof their Series 2000PV joint restraint. With the use of EBAA’s Series 2000PVusing standard mechanical joint installation on 12 inch PVC pipe, and a 80 TonMotor Crane, EBAA Iron lifted a D7 Caterpillar Track Type Tractor weighing in at50,350 lbs. Along with this, the Series 2000PV has been tested to over 700 PSI.Concluding that EBAA’s Series 2000PV MEGALUG can take the load.

Install perinstructions.LeaveSpacerIdentify the pipe. The 2000PV is for use withPVC and HDPE pipe. The 4 inch through 12inch size may be used on C900, IPS, and C909PVC pipe as well as C906 HDPE pipe. Checkto see if the spacers under the screws arein place. If the pipe is C900 or is ductile ironO.D., proceed with spacers in place. If the pipeis IPS O.D., remove the spacers. Since 3 inchand 14 inch through 24 inch restraints are onlyused with one pipe diameter, no spacers areused.ASTM 2241 PVC Pipe Sizes (IPS O.D.)2.*Clean the socket and the plain end. Lubrication and additional cleaning should be provided by brushing both the gasket and plain endwith soapy water or an approved pipe lubricatemeeting the requirements of ANSI/AWWAC111/A12.11 just prior to slipping the gasketonto the plain end for joint assembly. Place thegland on the plain end with the lip extensiontoward the plain end; follow by the gasketwith the narrow edge of the gasket toward theplain end [The gasket provided may have beenthe EBAA-Seal Improved Mechanical JointGasket. This gasket is bi-directional and has nofront or back. The use of a pipe wall stiffeninginsert is required on High Density Polyethylenepipe.].RemoveSpacer3.*Insert the pipe into the socket and press thegasket firmly and evenly into the gasket recess.Keep the joint straight during assembly.4.*Push the gland toward the socket and centerit around the pipe with the gland lip againstthe gasket. Insert bolts and hand-tightennuts. Make deflection after joint assembly butbefore tightening bolts.7.If removal is necessary, utilize the ⅝ inch hexheads provided. If reassembly is required, assemble the joint in the same manner as above;tighten the screws to 60 to 80 ft-lbs. If theSeries 2000PV restraint is removed from thepipe, be sure that all of the screws, spacers (ifrequired), and wedges are in place before therestraint is reassembled.NOTE: In cold weather it is preferable to warmthe gasket to facilitate assembly of the joint.5.*Tighten the bolts to the normal range of bolttorque [45-60 ft-lbs for 3 inch, 75-90 ft-lbs for4 inch through 24 inch, 100-120 ft-lbs for 30inch and 36 inch, and 120-150 ft-lbs for 42inch and 48 inch.] while at all times maintaining approximately the same distance betweenthe gland and the face of the flange at allpoints around the socket. This can be accomplished by partially tightening the bottom boltfirst, then the top bolt, next the bolts at eitherside, finally the remaining bolts. Repeat theprocess until all bolts are within the appropriate range of torque. In large sizes (30-48 inch),five or more repetitions may be required. Theuse of a torque-indicating wrench will facilitatethe procedure.6.Tighten the torque limiting twist-off nuts ina clockwise direction (direction indicated byarrow on top of nut) until all wedges are infirm contact with the pipe surface. Continuetightening in an alternating manner until all ofthe nuts have been twisted off.*These steps are requirements of AWWA C600.
