Introduction to American Mathematics Competition 10 and 12WELCOME TO THE COMPETITIONTHE 20TH AMC 10 AND THE 70TH AMC 12What is the MAA AMC Program? The Mathematical Association of America’s AmericanMathematics Competitions program leads the nationin strengthening the mathematical capabilities ofthe next generation of problem solvers. Throughclassroom resources and friendly competition, theMAA AMC program helps America’s educators identifytalent and foster a love of mathematics. The MAAAMC program positively impacts the analytical skillsneeded for future careers in an innovative society. The MAA American Mathematics Competitions are aseries of examinations and accompanying curriculummaterials that develop problem-solving skills andmathematical knowledge in middle and high schoolstudents. What are the AMC 10 and AMC 12?The AMC 10 and AMC 12 are school-based, 25-question,75-minute, multiple choice examinations in high schoolmathematics designed to develop students’ problemsolving skills and interest in mathematics. When are the AMC 10 and AMC 12?The A version of each examination is administeredaround the country on Thursday, February 7, 2019, andthe B version of each examination is administered onWednesday, February 13, 2019.AMC 10 and AMC 12, A and B Dates:There are two versions of each competition offered:an AMC 10 A and 10 B and an AMC 12 A and 12 B. Thereare some overlapping questions on the AMC 10 andAMC 12, so if a school offers both compettions on thescheduled day, they must be given at the same time.Additionally, a student may only take one competitionper competition date. Students are permitted totake the A version of any competition and the Bversion of any competition if they meet the age andgrade requirements. For example, a student can takethe AMC 10 A and AMC 12 B, or the AMC 10 A andAMC 10 B. However, that student may not take theAMC 10 A and AMC 12 A. Your school can register for allfour competitions, which can be helpful for providingan alternative date for students.2 2019 AMC 10 and AMC 12 Teacher’s ManualWhy Host the AMC 10 and AMC 12? The AMC 10 and AMC 12 help high school studentsdevelop positive attitudes towards analyticalthinking, a skill that is highly valued by universitiesand employers. The AMC 10 and AMC 12 connectclassroom skills to unique problem-solvingchallenges in a fun and engaging manner. College admissions offices love to see evidence ofproblem-solving skills in their applicants. The AMCcompetitions provide students with an opportunityto demonstrate these skills in a low-stress, friendlyenvironment. Over 1 million additional STEM graduates will beneeded by 2022 to meet the growing demands ofthe labor market. The AMC 10 and AMC 12 can helpyour students identify an interest in and preparethem for future STEM careers. The AMC 10 and AMC 12 are the first in a series ofcompetitions that lead all the way to the InternationalMathematical Olympiad. Students with top scoreson the AMC 10 or AMC 12 may be invited to take theAmerican Invitational Mathematics Examination(AIME). High scorers on the AIME will be invited toparticipate in the USA Mathematical Olympiad.

Pre-Exam PreparationHow do you prepare students? The best way to prepare students for the MAA AmericanMathematics Competitions is to practice creative, analyticalthinking throughout the year. Schools involved with theMAA AMC often have year-round activities connectedto special classes, math clubs, or other extracurriculargroups. Individual students can benefit greatly frompracticing math problems from past MAA AMC exams. The MAA AMC offers a variety of resources designed toimprove the problem-solving skills of students.Who is eligible to participate?Students with a passion for problem-solving who are ingrade 10 or below and under 17.5 years of age on the dayof the competition are eligible to participate in the AMC 10.Students in grade 12 or below and under 19.5 years of ageon the day of the competition are eligible to participate inthe AMC 12.Benefits for TeachersTeachers and competition managers who registertheir school for the AMC 10 or AMC 12 exam receivea complimentary K-12 Teacher Membership to theMathematical Association of America. The membershipbenefits for you and your classroom include: Access to the MAA Curriculum Inspirations project, which provides free video and print materials, basedon past AMC questions designed to help educatorsteach students creative problem-solving skills. AllCurriculum Inspirations videos and materials are crossreferenced to the Common Core State Standards inmathematics and designed to capture your students’interest in mathematics.Pre-exam checklist for AMC 10 and AMC 12:Have students pre-fill all name and demographicinformation on their answer sheet prior to thecompetition day. Students must use their fulllegal name, no nick names or abbreviations. They should pay careful attention to markingtheir name and address accurately. Invitational CompetitionsAmerican Invitational Mathematics ExaminationThe American Invitational Mathematics Examination(AIME) is an invitational exam for the top performerson the AMC 10 and AMC 12. It is an honor to be invited to take the exam, which can lead to being selectedto the US International Mathematical Olympiad team. The main date of this exam (the AIME I) is March 13,2019, with an alternative date (AIME II) of March 21,2019. Unlike with the A and B versions of the AMC 10and AMC 12 exams, students can only take one AIMEexam. Please ensure that you are able to administerone of these days in the event that a student qualifiesfor the exam.AIME Qualification: Qualification parameters dependon the results of the AMC 10 and AMC 12 competitions. For the AMC 10, at least the top 2.5% of all scorers oneach version are invited, and for the AMC 12, at leastthe top 5% of all scorers on each version are invited.A cut off score will be announced for each exam basedon the distribution of scores.AIME Preparation: The AIME has a different formatthan the AMC 10 and AMC 12. The AIME is 3 hoursinstead of 75 minutes, all answers are 3-digit integersinstead of multiple choice, and there are 15 problemsinstead of 25. If you have students who are first-timeAIME qualifiers, show them the MAA AMC resourcepage so that they can familiarize themselves with thetypes of problems on the AIME.AIME Administration: The materials for hosting theAIME on March 13 or 21, 2019 are included in yourAMC 10 and AMC 12 competition materials. Please donot discard the AIME materials, even if your schoolhas not had AIME qualifiers in the past. Competitionmanagers are required to offer the AIME I or AIME IIat their institution. In the event that a competitionmanager is unable to offer either one of the AIMEsthey must help their students who qualified find analternative location to take the exam. For both AIMEexams, the competition problems will be emailedto competition managers. For more informationabout how to administer the AIME, please read theInvitational Competitions Teacher’s Manual.THE AIME I IS MARCH 13, 2019,WITH AN ALTERNATE DATE (AIME II) OF MARCH 21, 2019.6 2019 AMC 10 and AMC 12 Teacher’s ManualAIME Location: Students must take the AIME at thesame competition location where they took the AMC10 or AMC 12. This is to ensure that a student’s AMC 10or AMC 12 score can be matched with their AIME scorefor USA Mathematical Olympiad qualification. In theevent that a student absolutely cannot take the AIMEat the same competition location, they are to makearrangements with a different competition managerwho has the materials to administer the exam andcomplete the Change of Venue Form. Students thatneed to take the AIME at a different venue shouldreach out to nearby schools listed on the AdditionalCompetition Locations webpage.United States of America Mathematical Olympiadand Junior Mathematical OlympiadThe United States of America Mathematical Olympiad(USAMO) and Junior Mathematical Olympiad(USAJMO) are each two-day, nine-hour, proof-basedexaminations. Students who took the AMC 12 and AIMEare eligible for the USAMO and students who took theAMC 10 and AIME are eligible for the USAJMO. Eachyear approximately 500 students are chosen for thetwo Olympiads based on a combination of AIME resultsand AMC 10 or AMC 12 results. For more informationabout exam qualification and administration details, please read our Invitational Competitions Teacher’sManual.MATERIALS TO HOST THE AIME ON MARCH 13 OR 21, 2019ARE INCLUDED WITH YOUR AMC 10 AND AMC 12EXAMINATION MATERIALSIN CASE YOUR STUDENTS’ SCORESQUALIFY THEM FOR AIME PARTICIPATIONPLEASE DO NOT DISCARDTHE AIME MATERIALS,EVEN IF YOUR SCHOOL HAS NOT HADANY AIME QUALIFIERS IN THE PAST.FOR EITHER EXAM DATE, THE COMPETITION PROBLEMSWILL BE EMAILED TO COMPETITION MANAGERSRATHER THAN MAILED LIKE THE AMC 10 AND AMC 12.

AMC PoliciesPolicy for Changes: The MAA Committee on theAmerican Mathematics Competitions may change theprogram rules, regulations, awards, and conditions ofparticipation in whole or in part.
