Use of Electronic Resources at Sivani Engineering College Library, ChilakapalemK. Srinivasa RaoTeaching Associate ,Dr. B.R. Ambedkar University ,Etcherla – Srikakulam –A.P.Abstract :The rapid advancements of information and communication technology (ICT) has brought revolutionary change in theinformation scenario giving rise to a number of options to handle varied information sources conveniently and effortlesslyas a result of which e-resources have become the most sought after modern library’s reserves in satisfying varied needsof students, teachers with minimum risk and time. Information technology has changed the world and has become one ofthe important tools for retrieving information.Key Words : E-Resources, ICTIntroduction :The electronic information resources have acquired a majorportion of library collections. The value and use of informationresources, particularly e-resources, have increased with the time. Therefore, there is necessity to make study on the different aspectsof e-resources and the issues relating to the use of e-resources byusers, more particularly by faculty members of academicinstitutions. The present study is an attempt to analyse the use of e-resourcesby the faculty members and students of Shivani EngineeringCollege and to find out the problems and constraints faced by theusers in accessing the e-resources with some purposefulsuggestions for its development.Review of Related Literature:Rogers (2001)1 studied faculty and graduate student use ofelectronic journals, printed journals and electronic databases wasconducted at Ohio State University (OSU) during the years 19982000. The surveys were administered three times (once in a year),allowing the researcher to gain insight into the changes of attitudesand adoption over time of electronic services. The findings of thesurveys showed that since 1998 there has been a significantprogress in the acceptance and usage of electronic journals atOSU. In 1998, only 200 e-journals were available, while in 2000,the number of available e-journals increased to more than3,000. In 1998, 19% of the respondents used e-journals atleast once a week, while in 2000, the percentage increased to36%. At the same time, the at least weekly usage of printedjournals decreased from 45% in 1998 to 34% in 2000. Weingartand Anderson (2000)2 measured the Awareness of the facultyand administrators toward electronic resources2 was studiedat the University of Utah. The findings showed greater need forpublicity and training. The questionnaires were distributed toall faculty and administrators (856 individuals). The return ratewas 49.8%. The questionnaire contained a list of 55 databasesavailable to the faculty and administrators. For each database, each respondent was asked to check whether he/she wasaware of the existence of the database. For each database therespondent used, he was asked to rank its ease of use. Only54% accessed the databases remotely, the rest of therespondents accessed them from the library.Hewitson’s3 (2002) study explores the result of an investigationinto the awareness and extent to which the university’sacademic staff use and assimilate Electronic InformationServices (EISs) into their work. the research was conductedusing two methods: a quantitative study involving aquestionnaire mailed to a random stratified sample of 200university staff and a qualitative study, which addressed fourspecific areas” the characteristics of the respondents (age,GNIMS - International E-Journal on Library Science - Volume No. 2 - Issue - 1 - June 20147

Use of Electronic Resources at Sivani Engineering College Library, Chilakapalemgender, faculty); the perceived level of the information technology(IT) literacy of staff; the frequency of use by academic staff; theextent to which academic staff integrate the use of EISs intostudents; educational license; and what the university can do tosupport staff better in their use of EISs. Dadzie (2005)1 hasinvestigated the use of electronic resources by students and facultyof Ashesi University, Ghana, the level of use, the type of informationaccessed and the effectiveness of the information communicationtools for information research. Igun (2005)2 has identified to thechallenges faced by the libraries and information centre in Africain the establishment of electronic publishing. Apart from theinformation source that can be obtained through the internet anddownloaded online, the actual acquisition of electronic books isstill not possible. KumbarMallinath and Lohar (2005)3, focusedon student attitudes toward digital resources and services. Itrevealed that the majority of the students are using the digitalresources frequently.Achonna (2008) in research article “Awareness, Access and Usageof E-Journal Resources of the Library, by the Students of YabaCollege of Technology, Yaba –Lagos Nigeria”, examined thestudents’ awareness, access, usage and problems faced in useof e-journal resources at the Yaba College of Technology library.Use of e-journal resources was found low. Lack of skills, inadequate provision of computers, power outrage etc. were theproblems faced in use of resources. Study concluded the needfor the training skills, provision of adequate computers, need topopularize the information technology and its usage and to motivatethe students to use e-journal resources.Atakan et al. (2008) “An Evaluation of the Second Survey onElectronic Databases Usage at Ankara University Digital Library”.A survey was conducted to measure the effectiveness of digitallibrary. Investigators compared the results of two surveys carriedout in 2002 and 2005. Results revealed that many faculty memberswere using electronic databases. Web of Science, Science Directand Ebsco were the most preferred databases. Lakan (2008)carried out a study named “Availability and Utilization of ElectronicInformation Databases by Staff of the Agricultural Complex, AhmaduBello University, Zaria”. Objective was to find the availability anduse of electronic databases by staff of university. Results revealedthat power outrages, slow Internet service and insufficient8computers were thefactors affecting the provision and use ofelectronic information resources.Moghaddam and Talawar(2008) “The Use of Scholarly Electronic Journals at the IndianInstitute of Science: A Case Study in India”. A growing interest inusing electronic journals was found as users had free access toelectronic journals at all hours. The userswere using electronicjournals mainly for research work and PDF format was the mostpreferred.service. Libraries were lacking behind to provide specificinformation. Sujatha and Mudhol (2008) carried out a survey tostudy the use of different types of electronic information sourcesby teachers/scientists, research scholars and post graduatestudents under title “Use of Electronic Information Sources at theCollege of Fisheries, Mangalore, India”. About 88.9% users useelectronic information sources for thesis/ project work and 87.6%used for on going research work. Majority of the respondentscomprising 79.0%, browsed the Internet for subject specificinformation websites and 75.3% for international/ regionalinstitution websites. E-mail was the mostfrequently used electronicinformation source followed by webresObjectives of the Study :1.To asses the amount of familiarity and frequency in theuse of the different types of electronic resources.2.To final the purpose and utilization of the electronicresources and services by the users.3.To know the level of satisfaction on current e-resources.4.To know the difficulties encountered by the users whileusing e-resources.5.To asses the opinion of users on electronic format over theprint formal.Scope :The scope the study is limited to sivani engineering collegelibrary chilakapallamsrikakulam. The study covers all type of usersirrespective of age sex education attainment status of the usersetc .Limitation :The present study aims to find the use level of e-resourcs in shivaniengineering college library chilakapalam srikakululam theGNIMS - International E-Journal on Library Science - Volume No. 2 - Issue - 1 - June 2014
