A REPORT ONMATHEMATICALOLYMPIADS gn June and July 1999, the Singapore Mathematical Society, jointly with theDepartment of Mathematics, National University of Singapore, organised theSingapore Secondary School Mathematical Olympiad (SSSMO), Junior and SeniorSections) and the Singapore Mathematical Olympiad (SMO). Altogether 7093 students from108 secondary schools and JCs participated in these competitions (some of these participantsrepresented SINDA, in addition, there was one primary school pupil who entered as an individual) .In these competitions, roughly the top 5% of the participants were awarded GoldCertificates, the next 5% Silver Certificates, the next 10% Bronze Certificates. The remainingparticipants all received Certificates of Participation. In addition, team prizes and individual prizes were given out. The team ranking was basedon the aggregate of the top three scores from each school (for the SSSMO Senior Section, onlyRound 1 scores were used) . For the SSSMO Senior Section, the total of Round 1 and SpecialRound scores was used for the individual ranking. This year, Special Team Prizes, based on the aggregate of the top three scores of NormalStream students from each school, were given out.All team and individual winners received their prizes from Guest-of-Honour RADM TeoChee Hean, Minister for Education and Second Minister for Defence, at the Prize PresentationCeremony held on Oct 2, 1999 at NUS.Top team and individual winners also received book prizes and sets of TI-92 graphingcalculators sponsored by Springer-Verlag Singapore Pte Ltd and Texas Instruments SingaporePte Ltd, respectively. The list of prize winners is appended. Also at the Prize Presentation Ceremony, the Singapore Mathematical Society gave aspecial token of appreciation and commendation to the Singapore National Team which won 4Bronze Medals in the International Mathematical Olympiad this year in Bucharest, Romania. The team members are

The need to develop a mathematical model begins with specific questions in a particular application area that the solution of the mathematical model will answer. Often the mathematical model developed is a mathematical “find” problem such as a scalar equation, a system o

2.1 Mathematical modeling In mathematical modeling, students elicit a mathematical solution for a problem that is formulated in mathematical terms but is embedded within meaningful, real-world context (Damlamian et al., 2013). Mathematical model
