Thank you.Course Description/Overview: Students continue to develop proficiency in Spanish language anddeepen their understanding of Spanish-speaking cultures as they: Converse, read, and write about real world topics while expanding knowledge of Spanishvocabulary and structures. Use knowledge of the language to make connections with other subjects (geography/politics, finearts, and math/science). Examine Spanish-speaking cultures and their social practices (music, food, popular media, etc.)and perspectives. Expand language-learning strategies to maintain a life-long interest in world languages andmultiple cultures at home and around the world.Spanish III is a mid-level course at Washburn that focuses on transitioning students from the basic lowerlevels of language learning to the more rigorous upper levels of the program. Students in this coursewill be directly preparing to enter into the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (DP)Spanish courses. The coursework in Spanish III goes beyond learning vocabulary and grammar andprepares students to become global citizens who are able to reason, debate, and analyze information inSpanish. The curriculum centers around thematic units and big ideas, with a focus on readingculturally-relevant and level-appropriate literature.Washburn’s course goals are also aligned with the American Council on the Teaching of ForeignLanguages, Minnesota and Minneapolis standards, as well as IB objectives (standards can be located n into IB Standard Level Spanish:The level 3 curriculum is designed to prepare students to enter into IB SL Spanish Year 1. However, notall students are ready for this course at the end of level 3. Additionally, some students choose toWashburn High School 2019-2020

continue their foreign language study, but not at the DP level. Therefore, all students will be assessed inthe middle of level 3 to determine whether they will be recommended for Spanish 4 or IB SL SpanishYear 1. Students recommended for Spanish 4 (scenario A) will have an extra year to prepare beforeentering into the IB class. Students recommended for IB SL Spanish Year 1 (scenario B) will enter intothe SL program right after level 3. This requirement is also in line with the US National Standards for ForeignLanguages. A student who wishes to speak in English must first ask permission. A conference may beheld with the student and parents if they are consistently unable to meet these expectations.Required Materials: Bring these items every day. 3-ring binder or folder for handouts and worksheets Loose leaf paper Notebook specifically for Spanish class (will be turned in sporadically) Literature (provided by WHS): Rebeldes de Tejas La Calaca Alegre La Hija del Sastre Vida y muerte en La Mara SalvatruchaPolicies Attendance: L earning Spanish happens best when you are engaged in Spanish. Each class isdesigned so that you will listen, speak, read, and write in Spanish. To ensure you are activelyengaged, you are required to arrive to class on time and be present all 55 minutes. Bathroom/Hallway Policy: Students are expected to check phones, use the bathroom, get a drink,refill water bottles, and visit lockers during the 5-minute passing time. In the case of anemergency, students will be required to use their planner to leave the room. Students will not beallowed to leave during the first or last ten minutes of class time and may only leave during worktime. Missing & Late Work: F or some students, this course will move at a fast pace. Due to this, it isimportant to keep up with the work in a timely manner. Any late assignments will receive agrade reduction of one letter grade and no credit will be received 3 days after the due date.Extenuating circumstances will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis.Washburn High School 2019-2020

Excused Absences/Makeup Work: Just like attendance, another way to be engaged in Spanish isto do the work. If you are absent, it is your job to make up the work you missed. Use otherstudents in the class as a resource. Talk to Profe before or after school ( NOT r ight before orduring class). A student with an excused absence on the day a task is a ssigned will have 3 days tocomplete any missed work in order to receive full credit. Make-up quizzes and assessments willgenerally not be administered during class. Participation: Same as attendance and absences/makeup work, actually listening, speaking,reading, and writing Spanish is the only way you will learn Spanish. Participation is key. Theexpectation is that you speak and engage in Spanish the whole class with classmates and withProfe. In order to be successful in this class, it will be necessary to practice your Spanish outsideof the classroom. There will be many opportunities, including Concordia Language Villages,travel abroad, DuoLingo, etc. The more you engage in Spanish, the more you learn Spanish! Retakes (Re-Learning): No individual test can be retaken. However, if you demonstrate growthon a specific type of summative assessment by the following quarter, your original score will bereplaced with the new higher score. (Each quarter students will be summatively assessed in fourdifferent areas: presentational writing, interpretive listening, interpretive reading, andinterpersonal listening/speaking.) Extra Credit: T his class is graded mostly on raw ability in Spanish. Therefore, no extra credit willbe given.School-wide Washburn Policies ( see Washburn Student Handbook) Electronics: There are no personal electronics (cell phones, iPads, etc.) allowed during class.According to the Washburn Student Handbook, on the first two offenses the device will beconfiscated and turned over to the student’s dean. The device can be retrieved from the dean atthe end of the day. A phone call will also be made to the student’s parent or guardian after thesecond offense. On the third offense, the device will be confiscated and turned over to the deanand the student’s parent or guardian will have to retrieve the device. Plagiarism: The World Language Department will not tolerate plagiarism in any form. For ageneral definition of plagiarism please see the Washburn Student Handbook. Also note that theuse of any online or electronic translation device to complete an assignment is plagiarism. This isnot your work. If the teacher suspects plagiarism, the student will be asked to justify their work.If they cannot justify their work within the parameters of the World Language Department’sexpectations, they will be asked to complete an alternative assignment and will also receive agrade reduction.Grading: The primary purpose of grading is to communicate the academic achievement status ofstudents to students, their families, employers, and post-secondary institutions.
