1998 Pensacola Theological Seminaryopened for pastors and those in Christian ministries. Ballard residence hall(north and south wings) was completelyrenovated for fall ’98, and the men’sRawson parking lot was paved. (Seephoto p. 9)The all-new Camp o’ the Pines wascompleted in time for the ’98 summercamping season. It was also used forPCC collegian outings, college functions,Campus Church outings, retreats, andvarious youth activities. From its beginning as a very smallcollege in 1974, Pensacola ChristianCollege has been fulfilling the vision thatGod gave—a place to prepare youngmen and women to be all they can be forthe honor and glory of Jesus Christ.Twenty-five years later, that visioncontinues. Events are recorded, not inmemorial granite, nor on computerdisks, but in the lives of students, whohave experienced strong spiritualgrowth, solid Biblical preparation forservice to the Lord, and God’s blessings—from a Dec. ’98 graduatebefore he left campusDear Dr. Horton,The impact of this campus on my life is inestimable. Mixedemotions perfectly describe graduation from an institution likethis. I am glad that I can be sad about leaving—that just means ithas been good to be here. I have been taught and touched by aloving faculty, staff, and student body that God has used. I couldlist teacher after teacher to whom I owe a great debt.“Thank you,” seems so insignificant. I know nothing of thesacrifices you have made, Dr. Horton, but leadership always bearsfar more than the followers ever know. God has changed me forHis glory while I have been here just as He has changed thousandsof others. As we go out to serve God, we are an extension of yourministry; so you touch a life every time we do. I pray that God willcontinue to grant you wisdom as you serve Him. Your labor is notin vain in the Lord.during and after their years at PCC.Graduates now serve on mission fieldsaround the world, in pastorates,Christian schools, and various serviceministries. Others, as lay folk, serve inchurches while working in secular fields.Dedicated to Excellence andCommitted to ServiceNewCamp o’the Pines1997 I Am the Way operaJerome Hines1997Pastor and Youth PastorAll the praise belongs to God; greatthings He hath done! From the PresidentThe following is excellent and thought provoking. It was writtenin the 1800s by Horatius Bonar, a famous and often quoted minister.Dr. Arlin HortonPresident/FounderBorn for EnduranceThere is some danger of fallinginto a soft and effeminate Christianity, under the plea of a lofty and etherealtheology. Christianity was born for endurance; not an exotic, but a hardyplant, braced by the keen wind; not languid, nor childish, nor cowardly. Itwalks with strong step and erect frame;it is kindly, but firm; it is gentle, buthonest; it is calm, but not facile; obliging, but not imbecile; decided, but notchurlish. It does not fear to speak thestern word of condemnation againsterror, nor to raise its voice against surrounding evils, under the pretext it isnot of this world; it does not shrinkfrom giving honest reproof, lest it comeunder the charge of displaying an unchristian spirit. It calls sin sin, onwhomsoever it is found, and wouldrather risk the accusation of being actuated by a bad spirit than not discharge an explicit duty. Let us not misjudge strong words used in honestcontroversy. Out of the heat a viper maycome forth; but we shake it off and feelno harm. The religion of both Old and NewTestaments is marked by fervent outspoken testimonies against evil. Tospeak smooth things in such a case maybe sentimentalism, but it is not Christianity. It is a betrayal of the cause oftruth and righteousness. If anyoneshould be frank, manly, honest, cheerful (I do not say blunt or rude, for aChristian must be courteous and polite), it is he who has tasted that the Lordis gracious, and is looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God.I know that charity covereth a multitudeof sins; but it does not call evil good, because a good man has done it; it doesnot excuse inconsistencies, because theinconsistent brother has a high nameand a fervent spirit; crookedness andworldliness are still crookedness andworldliness, though exhibited in onewho seems to have reached no commonheight of attainment.—Horatius Bonar (1808–89)6PCC UPDATE G SPRING 1999Texture photo courtesy Corbis

Independent Baptists hold different views of the BibleThe following illustrates contrasting positions by two church groups.Group AGroup BFundamental Baptist Fellowship (FBF)FBF, Frontline(Sept./Oct. 1998), p. 38Greenville/Taylors, S.C.Resolution 98.18“The FBF deplores the attempts being madeunnecessarily to divide Fundamentalists over the matterof versions and translations. We reaffirm our previousresolutions on this matter and the historic fundamentalposition that infallibility, inspiration, and inerrancyare posited [rest] only in the autographa [originals]and are not to be ascribed to any manuscript orversion of the Holy Scriptures. We deplore translationattempts by those not committed to the integrity ofScripture. At the same time, we condemn those who, inan attempt to defend a particular translation, resort toperverting and misusing statements of those whom theyconsider their opponents in this debate. We recommitourselves to living truths of Scripture as well as defending them.” (Emphasis added)It is obvious from the above Resolution that the Fundamental BaptistFellowship chose not to include thepreservation of God’s Word in the listof Bible doctrines. They clearly statethat they do not believe that anytranslation or version is infallible(wholly trustworthy), inspired, orinerrant. Their position is the naturalistic result of a historic and scientific(textual criticism) approach to theBible, which is shared by newevangelicals and liberals. MostIndependent Baptist pastors andcongregations would not agree withthis Resolution of the FBF (Group A).The prime issue of the textual debate inBible Fundamentalism is the preserva-Independent Baptist Fellowship, Internationalchurch doctrineFt. Worth, Tex.“By ‘inspiration’ we mean that the books of the Biblewere written by holy men of old as they were moved by theHoly Spirit, in such a definite way that their writings weresupernaturally and verbally inspired and free from error asno other writings have ever been or ever will be inspired. We believe that the original manuscripts of the Wordof God are no longer in existence, but that God hassupernaturally and providentially preserved His Wordfrom the very beginning through all of time to this verymoment (Psa. 12:6–7, 119:160; Isa. 59:21; Matt. 5:18, 24:35;1 Pet. 1:23).We believe that God’s Word is preserved for us today inthe Authorized Version (1611) and that it is the Godhonored text of the Reformation. We believe that inspiration without preservation would be meaningless.”(Emphasis added)tion of an infallible (wholly trustworthy) Bible for us today. Or, in layman’sterms, can you hold the Bible and say, “Ibelieve this is the inspired, infallible, preserved Word of God”? Or, is it aBible that has been corrupted witherrors and is therefore fallible (nottrustworthy)? Some critics in the textual debate saythat God has not told us how Hewould preserve His Word. Therefore,if we say that God has preserved HisWord in the traditional Hebrew andGreek text, the critics say we are guiltyof adding to the Bible. However, the important question todayis not how God preserved His Word, for the majority of Bible believersbelieve that God did providentiallypreserve His Word, and a glimpse ofthat preservation process is seen fromtime to time. We don’t have to know allthe history of God’s providential preservation because it is accepted by faith. The important question is “Where is theWord of God for us today?” If it is in themodern versions, the omissions andchanges cause confusion in what isGod’s Word. If it is not in any translation, then where is it in the 5,000-plusmanuscripts to which only a few scholars have access? Some critics believe theBible is preserved only in heaven andnot in any printed form on earth; therefore for us on earth it is a lost Bible.PCC UPDATE G SPRING 19997
