BE YOURBESTPrincipal’s ReportThe arrival of midsummer and the Golowan Festival has coincided with the busiest week ofthe Academy year. There are almost too many events and successes to mention in thenewsletter this week. Most importantly, we said goodbye to our wonderful Year 11 studentswho have been an absolute credit to the Academy and a pleasure to teach over the last fiveyears. We invited the Year 11 students to a special Leavers’ Assembly on Tuesday andwere treated to some wonderful music, films, speeches and ‘celebrity’ prizes. There was alovely atmosphere at the garden party wheresoft drinks and cakes were provided including aspecial French crêperie run by Miss Bennett. This was followed later in the day by a formalmeal at The Godolphin Arms for all of ourhardworking prefects. It was an opportunity tothank students for the excellent service theyhad given in this leadership role over the lastyear. The Year 11 Ball was held in brilliant sunshine at Tregenna Castle on Wednesday evening. The students looked immaculate and extremely grown-up in their ball gowns and suits. Anumber of students arrived using unusual modes of transport including a tractor, a 1915Ford motor car and a motorised golf trolley. A Radio 4 journalist from Woman’s Hour cameto interview and photograph the event for a forthcoming programme. The evening was agreat success and a wonderful occasion which I am sure they will remember for a long time.Tregenna Castle was also the location for our national Applied Minds Alliance conferenceon Thursday which received critical acclaim from participants, corporate sponsors andschool governors from across Cornwall. The conference speakers engaged the audiencewith compelling talks on Adventure Learning, IT futures and other innovative educationalideas. The Alliance partners from primary, secondary and special schools set up excellentdisplay stands demonstrating areas of excellence that they are happy to share as bestpractice. A particular thanks needs to go to students from the following schools: RedruthSchool for delivering a workshop on REAL Projects, Ludgvan School for their activecontribution in discussions and workshops and finally Digital Leaders from Mounts BayAcademy for helping with the drone demonstration led by Microcomms. Finally, the week has ended with an amazing Sports Awards evening. Thanks to ouroutstanding PE department who ran the celebration event with supreme professionalism.Their hard work and dedication has enabled the Academy to take numerous sporting teamsto compete in the Cornwall School Games events this week.Don’t forget to come and support students and staff in the Golowan processions tomorrowat 11am and 3pm. Have a happy Mazey weekend.Best wishesSara DaveyAcademy Principal

BECURIOUSFrench ExchangeThis week many people have been busy with the 15 French students from Concarneauvisiting Mounts Bay. Their first day was on Monday, when we all met in reception and werepaired with French students. This was a great opportunity to learn all about their Frenchculture and to pick up on many new French phrases. They came as part of the Twinningcommittee to help set up an exchange programme with our school. The students came totheir partners’ classes and joined in with the activities, they came to lessons such as Maths,English and P.E. Throughout the week many people joined in, including people who arelearning other languages, everyone seemed to get involved. They stayed in school for threedays in total, Monday, Tuesday and Friday. On Wednesday they went to Flambards. This was just one of the places in Cornwall whichthey visited, during the afternoons they travelled to all the tourist attractions including StMichael's Mount and St Ives.As well as lessons they also participated in the preparation behind Golowan. This includedpainting the sculptures which will be used during the parade, which they too will be takingpart in on Saturday. On Thursday, after school, in the orchard we held a goodbye event. We had strawberriesand cream, lemonade and scones. Afterwards all students played a game of football/rugby,which again everyone seemed to get involved in. The students gave gifts to their partners, which were cultural to Concarneau and France. The gifts were items such as fudge, crêpes, biscuits etc. It was a great opportunity to show them what Mounts Bay and Cornwall is allabout.Overall it was a great experience. I personally have picked up on some new words andcleaned up some of my pronunciation. I hope that another event like this will occur in thenear future, perhaps even the opportunity to go over there.Report by Niamiah Jack

BEADVENTUROUSShifting HorizonsThe Shifting Horizons 180 programme has just come toan end at MBA. The programme took place at GodolphinNational Trust woods, which now grow over an old miningsite. We were a small group of Year 9, 10 and 11students. We went out of school half a day a week forabout 10 weeks and also had some one-to-onementoring. The programme helps students develop skillssuch as confidence, trust and teamwork through differentoutdoor activities such as building fires from naturalsources; you can learn to cook outdoors and it alsoteaches you how to build shelters from small amounts ofresources - this isn't easy!In my opinion it helps you to beable to ask for help, which issomething that I used to strugglewith myself. The programmehelped me to engage in a teamand to become more confident inmyself and it is also one of thebest experiences I've ever had.Codie Stafford, Year 11, whowas on the programme with mecommented, "It's never too earlyto start preparing for yourexams, don't leave it until year10!" She added, "MBA was thebest school I have ever been tobecause it gave me chances."At the end of the programme we have received a John MuirDiscovery Award which is based around four topics: discovering awild place; exploring a wild place; conserving a wild place; andsharing our experiences. I would say that if you get a chance todo the programme definitely take it up.Report by Ethan Ford
