However, thesepositive characteristics can lead to disappointment after ashort time as soon as stainless steel is improperly handled orused in inappropriate places.Protective passive layerBeside the alloy composition and the microstructure, thecorrosion resistance of stainless steels depends on the qualityof the passive layer. The chrome oxide layer of only 2 to 4nanometers forms spontaneously – provided that the chromecontent of the material is higher than 12 %, the surface ismetallically clean and there is enough oxygen for the reaction.
The passive layer ensures that there is no direct contactbetween the material and the surrounding medium, andtherefore protects against corrosion. The protective passivelayer may be damaged when the metal is processed bymeans of drilling, turning, milling, bending, welding or heattreatment.
