For cars equipped with electronic power steering, drive by wire, and rolloveravoidance, the position of the steering wheel, the direction of steering, and thevelocity at which the wheel is being turned are paramount input data. An encodingwheel is connected to the steering wheel and a transmissive sensor, also knownas a slotted interrupter, is used. Key features of the sensor include dual channelsto provide both rate of change and direction of steering, a wide gap to accountfor the tolerances commonly associated with steering assemblies, and a moisturesensitivity level that allows for long durations on the plant floor.
