English – Creative Writing Students applyingfor an MFA in English–Cre a tive Writing must submit a manu script (at least 20 pages) of their originalwork to the Graduate Advisor, Eng lish Department,Klapper Hall, Room 607, by the application deadline.3B. Art Studio (MFA) All applicants to theMaster of Fine Arts program must send to the ArtDepartment at least 15, and no more than 20,2ʺ x 2ʺ color slides of creative work. These shouldinclude at least two drawings. Each slide shouldindicate the top and the dimensions of the originalmaterial as well as the applicant’s name. (Slides ofsuccessful candidates will be retained for analysisand discussion. Other slides will be returned if theyare accompanied by a self-addressed envelope bearing proper post age.) Again, slides must be sent in aseparate envelope directly to the Art Department,Applicants for the Special Education program arerequired to hold a provisional or permanent certification in general education in the age/grade rangeof the Special Education program for which theyare applying [i.e., Early Childhood (Birth–Grade 2),Childhood (Grades 1–6), and Adolescence (Grades7–12)]. Students applying for the AdolescenceSpecial Education program must hold a certificationin teaching within a content area (e.g., mathematicsor science).Applicants for the Physical Education program(Code 562) must have completed a bachelor’s degreein physical education/teaching including completion of student teaching in physical education, andmust hold an Initial Certificate in Physical Education(all grades). All other applicants must apply, meeting an early deadline, to the Initial AdvancedCertificate Program/Physical Education (Code 827),which requires three letters of recommendationand the added requirement of a “Letter of Intent”as described in the Graduate Bulletin and on thedepartment’s Web page.3D. Music All music applicants (except MusicEducation, program code 561) should send a photocopy of their application directly to the Schoolof Music when they file the original applicationwith the Graduate Admissions Office. Per for mancemajors should list their major instrument below thepro gram code (335) on the application, and shouldcontact the School of Music directly to obtain reper tory requirements and arrange for their major audition. Applicants living overseas or at a considerabledistance may send an audition tape. All other musicapplicants (program code 334) should sub mit copies of their recent work: composition majors, sendtwo or three recent compositions; theory majors,send one or two examples of music written in thetraditional tonal system (e.g., fugue, a movement insonata or rondo form, etc.), and a recent paper; his tory majors, send only a recent paper. These materials or tapes should be sent directly to the Graduate

Music Education Applicants seeking admissionto New York State Initial Teacher Certification inMusic Education (program code 864) are admitted only for the fall semester. All applicants mustinterview with the music education faculty priorto admission approval (typically in mid-May).Qualified applicants will be notified by the MusicEducation advisor about specific dates and timesfor interviews after the written application has beenreviewed.3F. Art History Applicants must describe theirproficiency in reading foreign languages within the500-word essay. The GRE score is not required foradmission, but if desired by the applicant, the scoremay be submitted and will be considered as part ofthe admissions credentials.3G. Educational Leadership All candidates forthe Educational Leadership program may enter asmatriculated or non-matriculated students for theFall or Spring semester or Summer Session, provided that they meet all entrances requirements: A minimum of three years of successful full-time teaching experience (e.g., completion ofprobation, tenure, contract renewa)l. A minimum grade-point average of 3.0 fromapproved post-secondary institutions for boththe bachelor’s and master’s degrees. A minimum of three letters of recommendation from supervisors and administratorsattesting to the applicant’s specific leadershipskills and experiences (e.g., how the applicanthas already contributed administrative orsupervisory functions to his/her school, withexamples). An essay of 1,000 words clearly expressing thecandidate’s reasons and supervisory potentialfor entrance into the program, detailing his/herskills, talents, knowledge, predispositions,administrative/supervisory experience, andcontributions to current school. A formal interview with at least two membersof the full-time faculty in the program.3H. Art Education While your papers are underreview, you must submit a 15-slide portfolio (in aplastic page) of your work. These must include atleast two drawings. A CD Rom in JPEG formatis also acceptable. On an accompanying page youmust provide the following information for eachslide: Title (if any) Size Medium DateInclude a self-addressed envelope stamped withsufficient postage for the material to be returned.Original artwork will not be accepted and will notbe reviewed. Incomplete applications without anSASE will not be considered. These materials aredue at the Graduate Admissions Office at the sametime all other materials are submitted. Admissionis competitive, and the submission dates will not beextended.3I.
