Welcome to The University of Nottingham Malaysia ommodation andarriving at the UniversityUniversity accommodationWhen you receive a room offer from theUniversity you should do the following: Read it carefully, taking note of the termsand conditions and the deadline for payments– rooms are only confirmed on receipt of thepayment required Return any signed forms, and any other requiredinformation, and make the necessary paymentsto the University by the specified deadline – ifyou have trouble getting your room acceptanceback to the University by the deadline, please faxor email the Accommodation Office, otherwisethey will allocate your room to another student.It is the University’s policy that students who areallocated accommodation in halls of residence areallowed to stay for only one academic year.On-campus accommodationThe on-campus halls of residence have a varietyof room configurations and rental rates and arerented on a self-catering basis. There are smallpantries available on each floor – these aredesigned for preparing drinks and snacksand as meeting points for students. As weanticipate that you will use the catering servicesin the Student Association Building, the pantriesare not designed to be used for cooking allyour meals.Every hall of residence has a warden who is amember of University staff and an on-campusresident. The wardens are there to assist you withany issues that arise while living at the University,and any other aspect of student life. The off-campus accommodation isclose to the University campus, allowing studentresidents to fully integrate with the activities heldon campus. There is transport to and from theoff-campus accommodation.DisclaimerThe off-campus accommodation is a privatearrangement between the student and the serviceprovider of off-campus accommodation. TheUniversity is under no obligation to either party onany matter. The University acts as a facilitator toprovide information to students about off-campusaccommodation and will not be held liable in anyway to either party.When do I need to arrive?Before registration, you will receive informationexplaining when you need to arrive on campus.Normally, students are only allowed to check intoon-campus accommodation one week beforeregistration day. Medicalinsurance is organised for full-time internationalstudents through EMGS. Group Hospitalisationand Surgical Policy is through AXA Affin GeneralInsurance Berhad.Key points Your medical insurance will come into effectfrom the point of registration at The University ofNottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC) duringthe registration week and is valid as long as youhave a student pass from UNMC. Outpatient specialist treatment, dental treatment,optical treatment and pre-existing conditions areall excluded from the policy. Observation tests,lab examinations, general physical or medicalexaminations, diagnosis and X-ray examinationsfor investigatory purposes are not covered either. An excess of RM50 per claim is applicable for allmedical expenses. One unit of currency is dividedinto 100 sen (cents). The ringgit bank notes areissued in six denominations: RM100, RM50,RM20, RM10, RM5 and RM1. Driving in MalaysiaIt is possible to drive in Malaysia with a validdriving licence from most countries for your firstthree months here. After three months you willneed to either have an international driving permit,which is usually valid for one year (internationaldriving permits must be obtained in your homecountry before you come to Malaysia), or obtain aMalaysian driving license. Only PhD students canconvert their home country licence to a Malaysiandriving licence. All other students may have toundergo a driving test in Malaysia to obtain aMalaysian driving license. If you intend to drive, itmay be worth checking to see if you are entitledto obtain a Malaysian driving licence. Laws against drinking and driving are strictlyenforced with stiff penalties.
