18TH Edition - UKIET urges electrical industry to ensure all new installations comply withupdated wiring regulations 18th Edition now in forceThe 18th Edition of the IETWiring Regulations is nowin force, meaning that allelectrical contractors must ensurethey are up to date with the newrequirements for BS 7671:2018.From January 1, 2019 all newelectrical installations must bedesigned to comply with thestandards and requirements setout in BS 7671:2018. Although notcompulsory, electrical professionalscan leave themselves open to legalaction if the work that they carryout does not meet the necessaryindustry requirements.BS 7671 focuses on improving thesafety of electrical installations,minimising the risk of fires resultingfrom unsafe wiring, andstandardising electrical installationdesign.JPEL/64 (the national WiringRegulations committee) has aresponsibility for keeping thesestandards up to date in line withnew and emerging technologiesand industry developments, whichare vast and fast moving.A number of new Regulations, orchanges to existing Regulationswere carefully considered, putout for public consultation, anddebated within the committee forthe 18th Edition. This includes newand amended requirements andrecommendations around the useof Arc Fault Detection Devices(AFDDs), Surge Protection Devices(SPDs), methods of support of wiringsystems and earthing arrangementsfor Electric Vehicle ChargingEquipment, among others.Mark Coles, Head of TechnicalRegulations at the IET, said, “The18th Edition of the IET WiringRegulations contains somesignificant changes to the way allelectrical professionals are required6 ELECTRICAL MAGAZINEto carry out their work in order tosafeguard themselves and the public.With this in mind, it is essential that allelectrical professionals ensure thatthey are up to speed with the newrequirements.”To help industry get up to date, theIET offers a dedicated course ontheir online training resource, the IETAcademy, delivering comprehensivetraining for City & Guild’s 2382:18qualification.The IET Academy provides theonly course for 2382 that has beenprepared by the IET, which jointlypublishes the IET Wiring Regulationswith BSI. The authors have beencarefully selected for their industryexperience and knowledge of BS7671. irish wiring rulesMAKE SURE YOU HAVE YOUR SAY ON THE PROPOSED NATIONAL WIRING RULES Improving safety across the industryThe National StandardsAuthority of Ireland (NSAI) isurging the more than 4,000registered electrical contractors inIreland, and all those working in theelectrotechnical sector, to havetheir say on the proposed NationalWiring Rules.The new rules have beendeveloped through the NationalStandards Authority of Ireland byindustry experts who sit on theNSAI’s Electro Technical Committee(ETC TC2) ‘Electrical Installations’.The National Wiring Rules areessential for electricians, inspectorsand regulators as they specifythe electrical installation safetyrequirements for all premises inIreland.Yvonne Wylde, TechnicalManager at the NSAI, said the ruleshave been updated to reflectbest practice and changes tointernational standards.“It’s been over 10 years since thelast set of rules was published inIreland, and there have beensignificant developments sincethen. The regulations rely on theWiring Rules for implementationand so it is critical that they arekept up to date.”The draft revisions improvesafeguards and bring industryrequirements in line with technicaldevelopments and best practice inEurope.www.elecmagazine.comFOLLOW US ON:The NSAI’s Standards Officer, StewartHickey said the revisions, if adopted,will significantly improve safety forboth electrical installers and homeowners.“Some of the key changes proposedin the new rules are that ResidualCurrent Devices (RCDs) will now berequired to be installed on lightingcircuits in domestic premises and ArcFault Detection Devices (AFDDs) willnow be recommended for circuitsinstalled in locations with particularrisk, such as in premises with sleepingaccommodation or buildingsmade of combustible constructionmaterials such as wooden buildings.“There will be a series of technicalseminars held across the countrylater in 2019 to outline the keychanges and what they meanfor electricians. This is equivalent tomeeting the electricity requirementsof 28 homes and will reduce thestore’s carbon output by some 40tonnes annually.
