Linking the FutureAs the worldwide leader in the energy and telecom cable industries, Prysmian Groupbelieves in the effective, efficient and sustainable supply of energy and information as aprimary driver in the development of communities. With this in mind, we provide major global organizations in many industries with bestin-class cable solutions, based on state-of-the-art technology. Through two renownedcommercial brands – Prysmian and Draka – based in almost 100 countries, we’reconstantly close to our customers, enabling them to further develop the world’s energyand telecoms infrastructures, and achieve sustainable, profitable growth.Introducing fiber optic systems forOverhead Transmission LinesOverhead optical fiber cable systems have become a key factor intelecommunication networks used by operators and power utilities.Due to the fact that minimal civil works are required and the rights of way have already beenestablished, it is possible to minimize costs and, most importantly, the time required to beginnetwork operation.Prysmian offers its customers a broad range of fiber optic cables foroverhead cable networks:Optical Ground Wire (OPGW)Composite optical ground wire system for installation on high voltage electric lines. All Dielectric Cable (ADSS)Self-supporting optical cable for all types of lines:transport electrical lines, distribution electrical lines, railways lines, etc.4

The main advantages of Prysmian’s solutions include the following:High reliability and proven experienceWe have installed over 200,000km (124,000miles) of OPGW since 1983 in more than 100countries in all five continents.Manufacturing capabilitiesPrysmian has a growing production capacityof more than 25,000km of OPGW cables peryear in three different continents; Europe,America and Asia.OHSAS 18001 and ISO 14001Prysmian Group is involved in implementingmanagement and production processes whichhelp improve environmental sustainabilityand safety at work, in accordance with theguidelines of its HSE policy.ISO 9001 and TL9000The Prysmian brand has always been aguarantee for the supply of products andservices based on common worldwide qualitystandards. Prysmian has a built-in multi-stepquality assurance program, which covers theentire production process from cable design andraw materials purchasing, to final inspection andtesting documentation.Full range of technologiesBecause we own all of the required technology,we provide every customer with the mostappropriate and relevant technical solution forany single project. Prysmian Group never has apre-determined answer to a challenge – instead,we always recommend the best solution on acase-by-case basis.5

PureCore OPGWAluminum Central Tube CableOptical Power Ground Wire forTransmission ApplicationsOverviewFeatures and BenefitsPrysmian’s PureCore OPGW cables are typically customdesigned to best match the optical, electrical, mechanical, quality and cost requirements of each individual project. This includes optimizing diameter, weight, breaking strengthand short circuit capacity. However, some “REFERENCEDESIGNS” are presented here. The core consists of opticalfibers contained in one or more loose buffer tubes allowingthe fibers to be free from strain even at high operating loads. In areas where there is high contamination or close proximityto the ocean, Prysmian recommends a grease coating on theouter armor layer.Extruded Aluminum Core TubeProduct s PureCore OPGW providesincreased conductivity without sacrificingtensile performance, lightning resistanceor limiting fiber count. One of the most frequent causes of fiber break during optical fiber cable manufacturing process is whipping damage. Whipping occurs when the end of an unfastened or broken fiber flails and strikes another fiber. Such a situation occurs during high speed rotation of fiber reels, for example during coloring, winding and in the cable .
