Bariatric EducationWhat is bariatrics?What is BMI?Bariatrics is the study and treatment ofobesity and those diseases associatedwith obesity. Diet, exercise, behaviormodification, lifestyle changes,institutional and home medicalequipment, medications and, in somecases, surgery are the tools used bybariatric physicians to help patientsmanage obesity.1Body Mass Index or BMI is a tool forindicating weight status in adults,representing weight levels associatedwith the lowest overall risk to health. Itis a measure of weight for height. Foradults over 20 years old, BMI falls intoone of these categories:3What is obesity?Obesity is defined as an excessivelyhigh amount of body fat or adiposetissue in relation to lean bodymass. The amount of body fat (oradiposity) includes concern for boththe distribution of fat throughout thebody and the size of the adipose tissuedeposits. Body fat distribution canbe estimated by skinfold measures,waist-to-hip circumference ratiosor techniques such as ultrasound,computed tomography or magneticresonance imaging.2BMIBMI is not the only indicatorof health risk.BMI is just one of many factorsrelated to developing a chronicdisease (such as heart disease,cancer or diabetes).
