At all times handle this firearm and allother firearms with intense respect for their power andpotential danger.Please read and understand all of the cautions, warnings,notices, proper handling procedures and instructionsoutlined in this owner’s manual before using yournew firearm.WARNING: You Are Responsible ForFirearm SafetyFAILURE TO FOLLOW ANY OF THE FOLLOWINGWARNINGS COULD RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURYOR DEATH. 11ALWAYS KEEP THE MUZZLE OF YOUR FIREARMPOINTED IN A SAFE DIRECTION EVEN THOUGH YOUARE CERTAIN IT IS UNLOADED.Never point any firearm at anything you do notintend to shoot. Be extremely alert and aware ofall persons and property within the range ofyour ammunition.2NEVER RELY TOTALLY ON YOUR FIREARM’SMECHANICAL “SAFETY” DEVICE. LIKE ANYMECHANICAL DEVICE, A “SAFETY” CAN SOMETIMESFAIL; IT CAN BE JARRED OR INADVERTENTLYMANIPULATED INTO AN UNSAFE CONDITION.The word “safety” describes a firearm’s trigger blockmechanism, sear block mechanism, hammer blockmechanism or firing pin block mechanism.
Make certain the firearm does not inadvertentlycontain any ammunition. Remember, merely removingthe magazine does not mean the chamber is unloaded.Always keep the chamber empty and the “safety” inthe on safe position unless shooting is imminent.Mechanical “safeties” are designed to place yourfirearm in a safer status, and no guarantee can be madethat the firearm will not fire even if the “safety” is inthe on safe position. Mechanical “safeties” merely aidsafe gun handling and are no excuse for pointing yourfirearm’s muzzle in an unsafe direction. See “Operationof the ‘Safety’” on pages 12-13 for instructions on theoperation of this firearm’s “safety.”4Remember, safe gun handling does not stop with yourfirearm’s mechanical “safety” devices, it starts there.Always treat this firearm with the respect due aloaded, ready-to-fire firearm.Wear shooting glasses to protect your eyes from flyingparticles. Allow proper distance (eye relief) betweena scope and your eye when firing a scoped pistol, rifleor shotgun. Do not use unorthodox shooting methodsthat could cause the rearward travel of the slide orbolt of a firearm to contact your eyes, face or hands.Always keep a safe distance between the muzzleof your firearm and any persons nearby, as muzzleblast, debris and ejecting cartridges could inflictserious injury.Some firearms do not have a mechanical “safety.”Many target firearms, lever-action firearms and pistolsdo not have manual “safety” mechanisms. Therefore itis critical to read and understand the owner’s manualfor every firearm which explains the safe operation ofthe firearm.While it is a good idea to “test” your firearm’smechanical “safety” periodically for proper function,never test the “safety” while your firearm is loaded orpointed in an unsafe direction.3ALWAYS WEAR EAR AND EYE PROTECTIONWHEN SHOOTING.Unprotected, repeated exposure to gunfire can causehearing damage. Wear hearing protection (shootingearplugs or muffs) to guard against such damage.Always wear eye protection when disassembling andcleaning any firearm to prevent the possibility ofsprings, spring-tensioned parts, solvents or otheragents from contacting your eyes.WHENEVER YOU HANDLE ANY FIREARM, OR HANDIT TO SOMEONE, ALWAYS OPEN THE ACTIONIMMEDIATELY AND VISUALLY CHECK THE FIREARM’SCHAMBER TO MAKE CERTAIN THAT THE FIREARM ISCOMPLETELY UNLOADED.5 2KEEP ALL FIREARMS UNLOADED DURINGTRANSPORT, EVEN WHEN STORED IN A HOLSTER,GUN CASE, SCABBARD OR OTHER CONTAINER.
6DROPPING OR JARRING A LOADED FIREARM CANCAUSE ACCIDENTAL DISCHARGE.This can occur even with the “safety” in the on safeposition. Be extremely careful while hunting or duringany shooting activity to avoid dropping any firearm.7HUNTING FROM ELEVATED SURFACES SUCH ASTREESTANDS IS DANGEROUS.Doing so may increase the risk of mishandling afirearm. The following rules should always be observedby you and those you hunt with. Always make certainthat the stand being used is safe and stable. Alwaysmake certain that your firearm is unloaded when it isbeing taken up and down from the stand. Alwaysmake certain that your firearm is not dropped fromthe stand, or dropped while it is being taken up ordown from the stand. Remember, a loaded firearmmay discharge when dropped, even with the “safety”in the on safe position.89BEWARE OF BARREL OBSTRUCTIONS.Mud, snow and an infinite variety of other objects mayinadvertently lodge in a barrel bore. It only takes asmall obstruction to cause dangerously increasedpressures that can damage your firearm and causeserious injury to yourself and others.BEFORE CHECKING FOR A BARREL OBSTRUCTION,BE CERTAIN YOUR FIREARM IS COMPLETELYUNLOADED, THERE IS NOT A LIVE CARTRIDGE INTHE CHAMBER AND THE “SAFETY” IS IN THEON SAFE POSITION.After assuring yourself that the firearm is completelyunloaded, open the breech or action and look throughthe barrel to be sure it is clear of obstructions. If anobstruction is seen, no matter how small it may be,clean the bore with a cleaning rod and patch asdescribed on pages 27-29 of this owner’s manual.10 BE ALERT TO THE SIGNS OF AMMUNITIONMALFUNCTION. IF YOU DETECT AN OFF SOUNDOR LIGHT RECOIL WHEN A CARTRIDGE IS FIRED,DO NOT LOAD ANOTHER CARTRIDGE INTOTHE CHAMBER.If your firearm fails to fire, keep the muzzle pointed ina safe direction for a minimum of 30 seconds. Rotatethe ejection area of the firearm away from you,carefully open the action and remove the cartridgefrom the chamber. If the primer is indented, thedefective cartridge should be disposed of in a way thatcannot cause harm. If the primer is not indented, yourSTORE YOUR FIREARM AND AMMUNITIONSEPARATELY, WELL BEYOND THE REACHOF CHILDREN.Take prudent safeguards to ensure your firearm doesnot become available to untrained, inexperienced orunwelcome hands. Store all firearms in secure, lockedcases or a gun safe. Keep your firearm unloaded whennot in use. 3
Nevertheless, we can assume no liability for incidentswhich occur through the use of cartridges ofnonstandard dimensions or which develop pressures inexcess of commercially available ammunition whichhas been loaded in accordance with standardsestablished by the Sporting Arms and AmmunitionManufacturers’ Institute (SAAMI).firearm should be examined by a qualified gunsmithand the cause of the malfunction corrected beforefurther use. Glance down the barrel to make sure thatno obstructions remain in the barrel. Completely clearthe barrel before loading and firing again. Failure tofollow these instructions can cause extensive damageto your firearm and possible serious injury to yourselfand others.14 DISCHARGING FIREARMS IN POORLY VENTILATEDAREAS, CLEANING FIREARMS OR HANDLINGAMMUNITION MAY RESULT IN EXPOSURE TO LEADAND OTHER SUBSTANCES KNOWN TO CAUSE BIRTHDEFECTS, REPRODUCTIVE HARM AND OTHERSERIOUS PHYSICAL INJURY. HAVE ADEQUATEVENTILATION AT ALL TIMES. WASH HANDSTHOROUGHLY AFTER EXPOSURE.11 NEVER INSERT A CARTRIDGE OF THE INCORRECTCALIBER INTO ANY FIREARM.The caliber of your firearm is marked on the barrel.Store all cartridges of different calibers in completelyseparate and well-marked containers. Never storecartridges of mixed calibers in a common container orin your pockets. See pages 15-16 for more informationon the correct ammunition for your firearm.15 DO NOT SNAP THE FIRING PIN ON AN EMPTYCHAMBER; THE CHAMBER MAY NOT BE EMPTY!Treat every firearm with the respect due a loadedfirearm, even though you are certain the firearmis unloaded.12 EXAMINE EVERY CARTRIDGE YOU PUT INYOUR FIREARM.We assume no responsibility for the use of unsafe orimproper firearm and ammunition combinations ordamage or injury caused by damaged ammunition.It is your responsibility to read and heed all warningsin this owner’s manual and on ammunition boxes.See pages 15-16 for more information on the correctammunition for your firearm.16 KEEP YOUR FINGERS AWAY FROM THE TRIGGERWHILE LOADING AND UNLOADING UNTIL SHOOTINGIS IMMINENT.17 BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND BACKSTOP,PARTICULARLY DURING LOW LIGHT PERIODS.Know the range of your ammunition. Never shoot atwater or hard objects.13 USE ONLY SAAMI APPROVED AMMUNITION.The barrel and action of this firearm have been madewith substantial “safety” margins beyond the pressuresdeveloped by established American commercial loads. 4
18 ALWAYS UNLOAD YOUR FIREARM’S CHAMBERBEFORE CROSSING A FENCE, CLIMBING ATREE, JUMPING A DITCH OR NEGOTIATINGOTHER OBSTACLES.Never place your firearm on or against a fence, tree,car or other similar object.22 NEVER DRINK ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES ORTAKE ANY TYPE OF DRUGS BEFORE ORDURING SHOOTING.Your vision, motor skills and judgment could bedangerously impaired, making your gun handlingunsafe to you and to others.19 BE DEFENSIVE AND ON GUARD AGAINST UNSAFEGUN HANDLING AROUND YOU AND OTHERS.Don’t be timid when it comes to firearm safety.If you observe other shooters violating any ofthese safety precautions, politely suggest saferhandling practices.23 READ AND HEED ALL WARNINGS IN THISOWNER’S MANUAL, ON AMMUNITION BOXESAND WITH ALL ACCESSORIES THAT YOU INSTALLON YOUR FIREARM.It is your responsibility to secure the most up-to-dateinformation on the safe handling procedures of yourWinchester firearm. We assume no liability forincidents which occur when unsafe or improperfirearm accessories or ammunition combinationsare used.20 BE CERTAIN YOUR FIREARM IS UNLOADEDBEFORE CLEANING.Because so many firearm accidents occur when afirearm is being cleaned, special and extreme careshould be taken to be sure your firearm is unloadedbefore disassembly, cleaning and reassembly.24 PRACTICE PERIODIC MAINTENANCE, AVOIDUNAUTHORIZED SERVICING.Your firearm is a mechanical device which will notlast forever, and as such, is subject to wear andrequires periodic inspection, adjustment and service.Winchester firearms should be serviced by aWinchester Repeating Arms Authorized RepairCenter or by our Service Facility in Arnold, Missouri.We assume no responsibility for injuries suffered orcaused by unauthorized servicing, alterations ormodifications of Winchester firearms.Keep ammunition away from the cleaning location.Never test the mechanical function of any firearmwith live ammunition.21 TEACH AND SUPERVISE FIREARMS SAFETY TOALL MEMBERS OF YOUR FAMILY, ESPECIALLYTO CHILDREN AND NON-SHOOTERS.Closely supervise newcomers to the shooting sports.Encourage enrollment in hunting and shootingsafety courses.5

Your Model 70 may have a controlledround feed bolt, a controlled round push feed bolt or apush feed bolt. Operation, removal and disassembly ofthe bolt as discussed in this owner’s manual are the samefor the three bolt styles.With respect to AFTERMARKET PARTS ORCOMPONENTS (including, for example, aftermarkettrigger systems, barrels, muzzle brakes, suppressors,magazines, etc.), USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. Winchesterfirearms are designed and engineered to meet stringentsafety standards. Winchester Repeating Arms is notresponsible for personal injuries or property damagecaused by alterations to a firearm. These conditions may or may not beapparent to the user (for example, installing anaftermarket barrel may have the effect of alteringGeneral Description of OperationGeneral DescriptionThe Winchester Model 70 bolt-action rifle is truly the“Rifleman’s Rifle.” Its natural balance, handling,pointability and proven reliability have made it afavorite the world over. 6

This improves accuracy andensures smooth, snag-free feeding as the cartridge neckand shoulder are guided into position (Figure 2, page 7).General OperationThe Model 70 is a bolt-action rifle that operates by liftingthe bolt handle, drawing the bolt rearward and thensliding the bolt forward and rotating the bolt handledownward until it stops. This process takes a cartridgefrom the magazine and loads it into the chamber for firing.A manual ejector gives more control over cartridgeejection. The Model 70’s Pre-’64 type design uses a bladesystem that allows you to vary the amount of ejectionforce. Pull sharply rearward and the cartridge ejects clearof the rifle. Pull slowly and easily remove the cartridgefrom the action (Figure 3, page 8).The Controlled Round Feed bolt design is a big part ofthe Model 70 legacy. Its massive claw extractor (Figure 1,page 7) secures approximately ¼ of the cartridge base andfully controls the cartridge as it enters the chamber. This 7

Learn how to pull the trigger and, above all,know the location and operation of the “safety.”Procedures for disassembly and operation of variouscomponents are outlined later in this owner’s manual.Please read and study them thoroughly.Fixed Blade EjectorNomenclatureIn conventional firearm terminology the position andmovement of firearm parts are described as they occurwith the firearm horizontal and in the normal firingposition: i.e., the muzzle is forward or in front; thebuttstock is rearward or to the rear; the trigger isdownward or underneath; the sight is upward or ontop. For general parts nomenclature, refer to Figure 4 onpage 9. Figure 5 on pages 10 and 11 covers the generalfeatures and benefits of the Model 70 design.A push feed design with a recessed bolt face and plungerstyle ejector merely pushes the cartridge forward until it isseated in the chamber. It then snaps over the rim of thecartridge, ready for extraction.Throughout this owner’s manual the “action” refersto the mechanism of this rifle which loads and securesthe cartridges in the chamber.Operation of left-hand models is identical, except that thebolt handle and ejection port are located on the left sideof the receiver.Serial NumberThe serial number is located on the right side of thereceiver, just forward of the loading/ejection port.Record the serial number at the front of this owner’smanual for future reference.All operations of the Model 70 are illustrated in thisowner’s manual with a right-hand model.Prior to using live ammunition, familiarize yourselfthoroughly with the operating instructions in thisowner’s manual. Get accustomed to the feel of yournew firearm and know the forces required to operate 8
