Welcome from the ChairWelcome to San Antonio for the 2019ASME Pressure Vessels & PipingConference! The PVP Conferenceis known as an outstandinginternational technical forum throughwhich participants can exchangeopinions and ideas with leadingexperts from industry and academia, and deepen their knowledgebase through exposure to diversetopics. The conference, built with apioneering spirit, helps disseminatecutting-edge knowledge on PressureVessels and Piping Technologies toour global community of practice. Our international experts, from40 countries in Europe, Africa, theMiddle East, Asia, the Americas andthe Oceania islands, will present theirlatest research findings in the area ofpressure vessels and piping.Hakim BouzidConference ChairThe ASME Pressure Vessels andPiping Division is the primarysponsor of this Conference, withadditional participation by theASME Nondestructive Evaluation,Diagnosis and Prognosis Division(NDPD). This year, under the theme“Future Technology Trends in theGlobal Pressure Vessel and PipingIndustry,” the conference hasattracted 570 technical papers and100 presentations in 180 technicaland panel sessions. In addition,we are presenting five TechnicalTutorials, two Special Tutorials, anEPRI Expert Workshop on StructuralIntegrity of Components in HighTemperature Applications, specialevents for ASME Code Users, students and Early Career Engineers, and the Rudy Scavuzzo Student PaperSymposium and 27th Annual StudentPaper Competition. The TechnologyDemonstration Forum is alsoorganized as part of our TechnicalProgram. The Opening Ceremonyand Plenary Session features keynotepresentations by expert speakersGregory Walz and Narasi Sridhar.4 PVP 2019 CONFERENCE PROGRAMTechnical papers and presentationspresented at this conference areseparated into Tracks according totheir technical areas. Since fewer andfewer computers allow for playingCD-ROMs and many companiesdiscourage the use of USB memorysticks, we chose to make technicalpapers available online to preregistered attendees in the link sentto their emails or via the ConferenceApp. At the conference, technicalpapers can also be obtained from ourDownload Station.A key component of every PVPConference is the opportunity tosocialize and make new friends, andthis year’s Conference offers severalgreat opportunities in beautifulSan Antonio. Enjoy the Mission SanJosé Tour on Monday — a guidedtour of the UNESCO World HeritageMissions on the southern reachof the Riverwalk. We will all meetat the Conference-wide Receptionon Monday evening in the RegencyBallroom in our conference venue, the Hyatt Regency San AntonioRiverwalk. On Tuesday, hop aboardone of San Antonio’s famous riverbarges for the River Barge Tour &Lunch. Guests will be wined anddined as they cruise down the SanAntonio River. You can also join us forentertainment and great food at theHonors & Awards Gala and Dinneron Wednesday evening. Additionaldetails regarding these activities canbe found in this program.I wish you a wonderful time in SanAntonio!Hakim BouzidConference Chair

ASME Pressure Vessels & PipingDivision53 Years of Cutting-Edge Research in PVPThe 2019 Pressure Vessels & Piping Conference marks the53rd Anniversary of the Pressure Vessels & Piping (PVP)Division. The Division’s rich history began with the researcharm of ASME, the Pressure Vessel Research Committee(PVRC). The PVRC united the most experienced membersin the design and manufacture of pressure vessels, valvesand pumps; and sponsored research programs on thinand thick shell vessels with the cooperation of the AtomicEnergy Commission (AEC) and other organizations as earlyas 1958. Among a number of institutions that participatedin the program, Pennsylvania State University dealt withstress analysis of pressure vessels with nozzle insertswith different types of reinforcement pads under combinedloading. D. Hardenberg and S. Zamrik published theirresults in WRC bulletins of 1963 and 1964. Contributions tothis work were also made by C. Taylor at Illinois Universityusing photoelasticity stress analysis, and E.O. Waters atYale University using computational analysis. In view ofthe growing interest in pressure vessel technology andresearch results, F. Williams from Taylor Forge, a veryactive member, spearheaded an organizational meeting atthe 1965 ASME Winter Annual Meeting (WAM) in Chicagoto form a division dedicated to all technical aspects ofpressure vessels and piping. Recommendations weremade by F. Williams and D. Young to create the PressureVessels and Piping Division. The recommendation passedunanimously and D. Young was named the first DivisionChair on April 13, 1966.To disseminate its mission, global conferences wereorganized to bring the technical community together and toexchange technology development in the pressure vesselsindustry. The continued success of PVP Conferences is dueto the dedication of our volunteers and the support of theircompanies.ASME is truly an international organization and the PVPDivision is an appropriate refl

Spherical Pressure Vessels Shell structures: When pressure vessels have walls that are thin in comparison to their radii and length. In the case of thin walled pressure vessels of spherical shape the ratio of radius r to wall thickness t is greater than 10. A sphere is the theoretical ideal shape for a vessel that resists internal pressure.
