What’s the Story?A poor man breaks the law by killing adeer in Sherwood Forest, which belongs tothe King. The Sheriff of Nottingham, whocatches the man, works for Prince John.The Sheriff and Prince John make poorpeople poorer by collecting money (calledtaxes) from them, but giving them nothingin return. The Sheriff wants the poor manhe catches to help him find Robin Hood,who lives in Sherwood Forest. The richpeople don’t like Robin Hood because hetries to help poor people.When Robin Hood’s friends try to protecthim, one man is captured. To rescue hisfriend, Robin Hood disguises himself asa woman. He and his friends fight theSheriff with swords and escape. PrinceJohn is mad that Robin Hood escaped andstole his money, too. He asks Maid Marian,a young woman, to help him find RobinHood. At first, Maid Marian plays a trickon Robin Hood, but then she decides tohelp him, because she hopes that RobinHood can help her father.Robin Hood and his friends decide toenter the Prince’s archery contest, wherethe winner receives a silver arrow. RobinHood disguises himself as an old man. Alsodisguised as a man, Maid Marian entersthe contest too. They do not recognizeeach other at the contest—but the Sheriffrecognizes Robin Hood and attacks him.They battle with swords, and Robin Hoodis the winner. He and Maid Marian getmarried. Later on, the mean Prince Johnbecomes the new King of England andcaptures Robin Hood. But again, RobinHood escapes, and disappears into theforest. How Can We HelpPeople in Need?In the play, Robin Hood and hisfriends steal money from the richto give to the poor. They want tohelp people who are in need.But we don’t need to steal in orderto help people. Our community islucky to have many organizationsthat provide help for peoplein need. Mother Hubbard’sCupboard (mhcfoodpantry.org)is one of those organizations.Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard (alsoknown as “The Hub”) is at 1100W. Allen Street in Bloomington.At the Hub, the goal is to help all people in need get healthy food and live well. The foodpantry there looks like a small grocery store, with a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables.The Hub offers free workshops on cooking and gardening—you can even borrowkitchen and garden tools there. The Hub’s youth educator leads kids’ gardeningactivities on Wednesdays from 4 to 5 p.m. You can also come to a weekly dropin cooking class like Kids Cook: a hands-on workshop for kids to experiment inthe kitchen, every Tuesday and Thursday from 4:15 to 5 p.m. And on Wednesdaysfrom 4 to 6 p.m. in the spring, you can work outside in the Hub’s gardens.There is no minimum age for volunteering. All ages and abilities are welcome. Families withyoung children and infants often volunteer together, especially in the garden.
