Macmillan Gateway Online Workbook – manual for teachersThese are instructions on how to use the Online Workbook, which accompanies theMacmillan Gateway 2nd Edition coursebook. It is intended to be used by teachers whouse the Gateway coursebook.Registration procedureNavigate tomacmillangateway2.comand click the Activate codebutton.Enter the code, which youwill find in your Teacher'sBook, and click Continue.Enter your registrationdetails and tick the box toaccept terms and conditions.Then click Continue.Confirm that you redeemaccess to the product. Itmight take some time beforeyour account is activated. 1

You will see the list ofavailable Resources andResource Packs for the course.You will only have access to theresources for the level which youhave activated.Resource packs include audioand video recordings as well asprintable worksheets. In the listof resources click the Downloadbutton to download a resourceonto your computer. 2

Then clickthe View button next toGateway 2nd Edition B2 OnlineWorkbook. It will open a newwindow with the onlineworkbook.Enter the username and thepassword which you usedduring registration process.Using the Online Workbook – creating a classFirst of all, you should create a new class,which your students will be able to join.Click the Add a class button in order tocreate a new class. 3

Write down the classpassword, which your students will needto join the class.In the “Advanced settings” section you canselect:Default score view – you can choosewhether you would like the first, the latestor the highest score to be displayed as thedefault score.Activity attempts – you can select thenumber of attempts the students mustmake before they are able to see thecorrect answers.First, latest or highest attempt – choosewhich attempt should be considered whencalculating and displaying students' results.Custom Grades You can set grades foreach of your classes according topercentage bands. For example, you mightchoose to set Grade A, for studentsachieving a score of 80% or above, GradeB to those who get from 75% to 79% etc.When you choose Custom Grades, studentswill be able to see both their percentageand grade on the Course Information page. 4

Macmillan Gateway Online Workbook – manual for teachersUsing the Online Workbook – viewing students' resultsGo to menu and click Classesto open a drop down list ofyour classes. Then click theclass name to proceed to classpanel.The first graph shows you theaverage score of the class. Ifyou have other classesassigned to the same course,you can choose to Compareclasses and add other classes'average scores to the graph.You can also plot individualstudent's results by clicking thegraph icon next to thestudent’s name.Students within the class arelisted below. You can see thedate of their last login, and thetotal time spent within the site,as well as their progressthrough the course andaverage score.Selecting the down arrow nextto the student’s name will openthe student’s individual graph,which shows their averagescore for each unit. You canselect a bar on the graph, orthe name of a unit to the rightof the graph, to view resultsfor different activity sets in thisunit. Clicking on the activityset will display results forindividual activities in this set. 5

You can choose todisplay data for a particularunit, section or activity. Clickthe green download icon todownload results in Excelformat to your computer.Using the Online Workbook – marking students' resultsMost activities are markedautomatically by the system. However,certain types of activities need to begraded by the teacher. Examples ofthese include writing or speakingactivities. In order to manually markthe activities, go to Menu and clickMarking. You will be presented with alist of activities completed by yourstudents that are pending yourmarking. Click on the green icon onthe right to mark an activity.Once you have checked your student'sanswers, click the Score activitybutton.Type in the number of points you wishto give to your student for that activity.Percentage mark will be automaticallycalculated. You can also write acomment for your student in the box.Click Submit and finish. Then clickSubmit to confirm. Take care here, asyou will not be able to change thismark later on.Once the activity has been marked, thestudent will receive a message 6

You can create anunlimited number of classes,each with its unique code. Inthis panel you can see the classname, password, coursebook,number of students andaverage score. You can editclass details by clicking thegreen icon with a pen.Remember to click the Savebutton in order to savechanges.In the class managementscreen click the Lock/Unlockicon to define which units andsections should be available tostudents. Normally, you wouldlock all the units and unlockthem one by one as youprogress through the course. Inthis way students will onlyhave access to the exercisesthey are studying at themoment. By clicking the symbol you can lock or unlocka section of a unit as well asparticular exercises in eachsection. Click Menu followed by thecourse you wish to view underCourses.You will see a list of units in yourcourse. Click the View unit button.For each unit you can choose anactivity set, such as vocabulary,grammar, reading, listening etc.Select the activity set that you wishto work on, for example,vocabulary. Icons for the activitiesavailable for that set will appearunderneath. Click Start to try anactivity for the first time orContinue to make another attemptat an activity you have alreadycompleted. Click the ′i′ on the rightof the activities to see whatdifferent icons represent.The graph below shows yourresults for the activities in each set.You can see your score for eachattempt at an activity (you can doeach activity a number of times).Click Select an activity to displayanother activity on the graph. Clickone of the green buttons on theright to see the activity windowwith your results for your Highestattempt, Latest attempt or Firstattempt. 8

Macmillan Gateway Online Workbook – manual for teachersUsing the Online Workbook – doing the activitiesClick the activity that you want tocomplete.Click the Reset activity button toclear all the answers you have enteredso far.The arrow buttons in the bottom left hand corner can be used to switchbetween activities in the currentactivity set.In the top right hand corner there aretwo arrows which allow you go to tothe previous and next activity set.You can go back to unit content clickthe Back to unit button.After completing the activity, click theSubmit answer button.A pop up box will appear showingyour score for this activity. Click Tryagain to have another go at thisactivity or click Check answers to seewhich of your answers are correct. 9

The incorrect ones with ared cross.Click Show correct answers at thebottom of the page to see what thecorrect answers are.You can go back to your own answersby clicking on Show my answers. 10

Toaccess the messaging section,click Menu and Messages. Tosend a new message, click Newmessage at the top right handside of the screen. You canchoose to email the entire classor individual students by clickingon the plus option.Using the Online Workbook – adding a courseTo activate another course on thesame account click Activate acourse. Then enter your code andclick confirm. You will now beable to access your new course.You may have to wait up to 20minutes to see the new product.The image on the screen willshow you the course that you arecurrently using. If you havemultiple courses, you can navigatethrough these by clicking on theright and left arrows on eitherside of the image.Using the Online Workbook – editing your personal detailsYou can change your personal details,such as name, date of birth, emailaddress, username and password byclicking on Profile in the menu. 11

The Viewsubscriptions button shows youwhich coursebooks you are using.
