U.S. History from 1900 to 1945World War I lasted from 1914 to 1918. GreatBritain, France, Italy, and some other countrieswere fighting against Germany, Austria-Hungary,and the Ottoman Empire during this war.Woodrow Wilson was President when the UnitedStates joined the war in 1917. Two millionAmerican soldiers were sent to France to helpend the war. Many Americans called it “the warto end all wars” because they believed that it hadbeen the worst war to date. But other long warshappened later.After World War I, the economy in the UnitedStates became very strong. But in 1929, the stockmarket crashed and many banks closed. Thisperiod from 1929 to 1940 was called the GreatDepression. During the Great Depression, manybusinesses closed and millions of people losttheir jobs. Families struggled to live with verylittle money and food. Franklin D. Roosevelt wasPresident at the time. He worked hard to helpthe country, and the economy improved. On December 7,1941, Japan attacked the American Naval ships inPearl Harbor, Hawaii. President Roosevelt askedCongress to declare war on Japan. As a result,the United States entered World War II to fightagainst Germany, Italy, and Japan. In 1944, theUnited States led the invasion to free Europefrom German power. The Germans surrenderedin May of 1945 and the Japanese surrendered inSeptember of 1945. The war was officially ended.One famous World War II general, Dwight D.World War II began in 1939 when GermanyEisenhower, became a popular war hero. He wasinvaded Poland. America’s Fight Against CommunismAfter World War II, the Cold War started betweenthe Soviet Union and the United States. Duringthe Cold War, communism was the main concernof the United States. The Soviet Union had acommunist economy where most property wasowned by the government. The United Stateshad a market economy, or capitalist economy.In a capitalist economy, businesses and propertyare owned by the people. The United Stateswanted countries around the world to havecapitalism and democracy. The United States andits allies were very worried about the spread ofcommunism to other countries.After 1945, Korea was divided into North Koreaand South Korea. The communist governmentin the Soviet Union supported North Korea.The United States and its allies supported SouthKorea. Soon, there were major conflicts overthe border between the two sides. The United States started fighting inKorea that year. The United States wanted to stopcommunism from spreading to South Korea.The Korean War ended in 1953 when both sidesagreed to stop fighting.From 1959 to 1975, U.S. Armed Forces and theSouth Vietnamese Army fought against the NorthVietnamese. The United States wanted to helpstop the spread of communism to South Vietnam.The war ended in 1975 when the communiststook over Saigon, the capital of South Vietnam.Soon after, Vietnam was under total communistcontrol.
