Install QuickBooks in 3 easy stepsTo install QuickBooks:1.2.Shut down all running programs, including antivirusprograms (remember to turn them back on once installationis complete).Insert the QuickBooks CD into your CD-ROM drive.If installation does not start automatically:1.2.3.4.3.Click Start from your Windows menu.Choose Run.Type D:\setup.exe(Where “D” is your CD drive).Click OK.Follow the on-screen instructions.Where should I install QuickBooks?We recommend that you accept the default folderlocation. Windows Vista, Windows 7 and higher requireprogram files to be installed in different locations thanin previous operating systems. To start QuickBooks, double-click the QuickBooksicon on your desktop, or click the Windows Startbutton and then click QuickBooks from thePrograms group.Register your copy of QuickBooksUnder the Help Menu, select Register QuickBooks. Registrationmust be made within 30 days of product installation. It onlytakes a few minutes to activate your product and get you onboard. When you register, you’ll receive one free support callwithin 60 days of purchase and have access to other QuickBookssupport options.Where can I find my Licence andProduct Numbers?If you purchased QuickBooks: From a retail store, your numbers are on the “GettingStarted” folder. Getting Started ChecklistCompanyName andAddressYou will need the contactinformation and legal name foryour company. Your legal name isthe name you use to file taxes foryour business.BusinessNumber (BN)If your business is incorporated,collects sales tax, or hasemployees, you need the 9-digitbusiness number issued to youby the Canada Revenue Agency(CRA). BankStatements,Credit CardAccounts, andOutstandingChequesYou need your latest bankstatement balances andinformation about any outstandingcheques, deposits, withdrawals,or charges applicable to all theaccounts you want to set upand manage in QuickBooks. Common TasksAdd an AccountWhen you set up your company file, QuickBooks automaticallycreates several accounts for you. There are two types ofaccounts: balance sheet accounts (such as chequing andsavings) and accounts used to group transactions for reportingpurposes (such as income and expense accounts).A chart of accounts is a complete list of your business’accounts and their balances. Your chart of accounts trackshow much money your company has, owes, and is coming inand going out. To add an account:1.2.3.4.5.6.Go to the Company menu, and click Lists.Select Chart of Accounts.Under Related Activities, click Create a new account.Select the type of account you want to create, then clickContinue.Enter information about the account: In Account Name, enter the name of the account asyou want it to appear on your financial statements. Enter additional information about the account asneeded based on the account type, such as the bankaccount number, the opening balance, or a description.Click Save & Close.QuickBooks EasyStart User Guide 8

Add CustomersCustomers are the people and companies to whom you sell yourproducts and services. You can use the information you enter topersonalize invoices for customers and quickly view the status oftheir accounts.Tip: For a video introduction to customers (andother topics), visit quickbooks.ca/videosTo add a customer:1.2.3.4.5.6.7.Go to the Company menu, and click Lists.Select Customer List.Under Related Activities, click Add a customer.In Customer Name, enter the name of the customer.If necessary, also enter an opening balance.In the Address Info tab, enter customer information,including the full name, billing and shipping addresses, andadditional contact information.Enter details in the Payment Settings tab, as desired.Click OK.QuickBooks EasyStart User Guide 9

Add VendorsVendors are the people and companies you buy goods andservices from to run your business. This could include the phonecompany, office supplies vendor, or utility companies.To add a vendor:1.2.3.4.5.6.Go to the Company menu and click Lists.Select Vendor List.Under Related Activities, click Add a vendor.In Vendor Name, enter the name of the vendor.Under Address Info, enter the vendor informationincluding the full name, address, and additional contactinformation.Click OK.QuickBooks EasyStart User Guide 10

Add ItemsIn QuickBooks, an item is anything that your company buys,sells, or resells to run your business. Items are your products,services, and things such as shipping and handling charges,subtotals, and discounts.Tip: For a video introduction to items (andother topics), visit quickbooks.ca/videosWhen you choose an item from the Item List on a sales form,QuickBooks fills in a description of the line item and calculatesthe amount for you.QuickBooks already includes several items you can use toperform calculations on the amounts in a sale, such as discountand subtotal items. To add an item:1.2.3.4.5.6.7.8.Go to the Company menu and click Lists.Select Item List.Under Related Activities, click Add an item you sell.In Item Name, enter the item name as it should appear onsales forms.In Description, enter a description that should appear onsales forms when you use the item.Enter the Price you charge your customers for the item.If you charge sales tax, choose the tax code that applies tothe item.Click the Account drop-down list and choose an account(category).
