Contributors: Dr. Ron Lee, JMJ and Ed Garnier, JMJBible Study One - Basics of the Holy Bible"Do whatever He tells you." – John 2:5- Our Blessed MotherThis Bible study has been prepared for use by the Secular Order of Mary,Inc. It is not intended as a theological thesis, but an introduction to the Scriptures formembers of the Order. All Rights ReservedBible Study OneSection 1PURPOSE: TO ACQUAINT YOU WITH THE BIBLEIn reading a book, it is a good thing to know who wrote it. The Bible is not one book, buta collection of many books written by many people. The Bible is divided into two main Divisions: The Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old Testament (OT) is the account of God forming man to receive salvation throughthe Son of God. The New Testament (NT) is about the Son of God, Jesus Christ.1

Throughout this study, you will see references such as: 2 Peter 1:21 (2 Pt 1:21) whichmeans, the Second Book of Peter, Chapter 1, verse 21. These reverences are given to helpyou locate the Scripture. Your Bible has a table of contents which will help you locate theposition of the particular book in the Old or New Testament. Whenever a Scripture isgiven, it is a good idea for you to look up the reference and write it out.2 Pt 1:21 states: "For the telling of God's Will (prophecy) did not come in ages past byman's own will, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit." Itwas the Holy Spirit that inspired men to write the Bible.God still uses holy men to bring about His Will in the world today. Normally, He buildson the natural, and man is not a medium (one who allows a spirit to speak instead ofhimself), but God will speak through this holy man, and it will not contradict the Word ofGod previously revealed. (2 Timothy, 3:16).This process of God speaking through men is called 'revelation'. There is naturalrevelation, that is, revelation through nature: One sees God's created splendor and theuniverse, the myriad of creation, millions of snowflakes and no two the same. The Wordof God is supernatural revelation. He stepped outside of His concealment and personallyspoke to man in human language. The writings or revelations did not suddenly appear, but were produced over a long period of time, through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. There were three main encounters through which God spoke to man.1. Adam and Eve, the first created humans, were the people in whom God used to bringabout that which is called primitive revelation. The story of Adam and Eve in theGarden of Eden is about creation and how God loved so much that He created creaturesin His own Image, and gifted them with immortality, they received the Divine Will ofGod , and placed them above all His creation. The content is simple. Basic truths ofnatural religion and morality. The account clearly demonstrates retribution for good andevil. It shows that man has an immortal souls, and that God loves him and created him forgood, not evil.2. For thousands of years after the fall, there was silence. Then God spoke to thepatriarchs of the Israelite people: Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. From about 1250 BConward, God spoke to the people of Israel through Moses and the prophets. This is theIsraelite Revelation.3. In the fullness of time, God presented to the Gentile world (non-Jewish and pagan),Jesus Christ, the Messiah, through Whom mankind can be saved. This is the ChristianRevelation. Both the primitive and Israelite Revelations were directed toward Jesus, Who is the sumof the Law, Prophets, and Psalms. He is the Total Sum of the Old Testament. Jesusfulfills in Himself, the promised blessings of God. He, Himself states, "I am the Way, theTruth, and the Life; no one comes to the Father but through Me." (John 14:6). There isonly one Teacher, and that is Jesus.2

It is important to note at this point, that God and man are not equals. God's dealings withpeople is a relationship between Creator and created. God established a "Covenant": anOld one and a New one. Please look at the Bible fact outline at the end of this study. It will give you importantfacts which will help you organize your future studies. In the New Testament, locate and write out Hebrews 1:1 (He 1:1).We say that the Holy Bible is the Word of God. What does "Word" mean? It is a way ofcarrying information. The Word of God is a message to man, a Way for God to reach us.The Word of God will help us to be like Jesus. It has been stated that the Word of God isHis Love letter to man. Our obedience to it is our love back to Him.Locate the first chapter of the Gospel of John. Read the first verse and answer thesequestions:1. Who was in the beginning?2. Where was the Word?3. Who was the Word? Now read verse 14 and answer these questions:1. What was made flesh?2. What happens to everyone who receives Him?3. Have you received Jesus Christ?4. If yes, were you old enough to know what you were doing?5. If you were to die right now, do you KNOW FOR CERTAIN that you would go toHeaven and be with Jesus and God the Father for all eternity?God's Word helps us to have faith and confidence in His promises. Please look up andwrite out I John 5:11-12 (1Jn 5:11-12).Jesus is the Living Word. He was God in human flesh. The Holy Bible is the writtenWord. It tells us that God the Father sent Jesus to die for us, so we could have eternal lifewith God, and not with the devil. Jesus died for our sins. He paid the price for our sins, and we are freed of sin when we confess them. Jesus died for us, and was raised from thedead. He is alive. He sent the Holy Spirit to be with us. A true believer in Jesus Christ hasthe Holy Spirit living within him (Jn 3:16).3

If you have asked Jesus to be your Lord and Savior, you have everlasting life. You willbegin to experience peace and joy in your life. You keep this peace and joy by learningwhat God wants from you, and His Plan for you. God calls you to love Him and yourfellow humans. Each person who has received Jesus has a ministry. God's Word preparesus for this ministry and empowers us with the knowledge and faith to do the words ofGod.These hints will help you daily:1. Read the Word of God each day: Listen for God to speak to you.2. Pray as often as you can. This is speaking to God, lifting your mind and heart to God.It means saying, "I love You, God; I praise You; I thank You for Your Love."3. Tell others how you found Jesus, and that they can find Him, too. Tell them whathappened to you!!Study Jn 10:10. Jesus said, "I have come that they might have life, and that they mighthave it more abundantly."Locate and write out Jn 8:31. 1. Who wrote the Bible?2. How did God live among men? (Jn 1:14)3. What is the living water? (Jn 7:38-39)4. How many books are in the OT? . In the NT?5. What is the name of the last book in the Bible?6. If you died this moment, would you go to heaven? Would your family members?7. What is prayer?8. What will the Word of God do for you?4

Prayer of a SoulJesus, I confess to You that I am a sinner. I have offended God and man, and I need to besaved. I cannot do it on my own. I have sinned through my own fault, in my mind, in mywords, and by not loving others the way I should. God, I want to be holy as You are Holy.Come into my heart, Jesus, and be the Lord of my life. I ask you, God, my Father, to sendthe Holy Spirit, to live in my very being and grant me the grace to serve You for alleternity. I renounce Satan and all his works. I renounce and declare myself free fromSatan's hold on me by my sins, and by the consequences of sin. I place myself under theprotection of the Blood of the Lamb, Jesus Christ! Lord God, create in me a clean heart, and put Your Holy Spirit in me. Renew me in my mind, my body, and my spirit. Give meYour Peace and Joy, which I need in order to be a credible witness to others of YourLove. I receive, in faith, the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. Transform me into Your Image.Father God, I pray not only for myself, but for the loved ones you have placed in my life.Grant salvation for them all. Let me be your priest of intercession, for them and for all theworld. Let my life be atonement for their sins. Have Mercy on me and on the wholeworld. Amen. You have prayed, and God has heard you. St. Paul stated that faith comes from hearingthe Word of God. If you prayed this prayer to the best of your ability, you now have theHoly Spirit, Who will begin to teach and lead you to the Truth and Wisdom of God.Your ability to read and understand God's Word is NOT the basis of your salvation, but itis the acceptance of what God has said about Jesus Christ. God's Word will help youlearn about the spiritual life and how to live in the Kingdom of God. It will give youwisdom and insight for your life. It will keep you from evil and harsh temptation, if youmake it part of your daily living. Keep your eyes on Jesus, and be obedience to what Godhas said in His Word.If you are serious about studying God's Word, these references can help:CONCORDANCE - Set up alphabetically like a dictionary, a concordance lists the keywords in the Bible, giving their location in the Scriptures;SYNOPSES and HARMONIES - a presentation of the Gospels or texts in parallelcolumns;ATLASES- geographical illustrations, maps, and current photographs of the areasinhabited by the people of the Bible. We recommend a few references for your library. Try to add Them when you can affordto do so:The Dictionary of the Bible, J. L. Mc Kenzie.5

Jews do not call their sacred writings the Bible. they call them the Torah, Neviim, andKethuvim. The Torah is the law; Neviim is the prophets; Kethuvim is the wisdom, passeddown through the generations.3. Man began to write around 5,000 years before Jesus.4. The Psalms are the prayer book of the Old Testament (OT). They were meant to besung.5. Prophecy in the Scriptures is not for personal interpretation. One must exercisecommon sense and rules of interpretation, in order to keep free of error.6. Fundamentalism is a belief that everything in the Bible is completely without error, and the Bible has everything one needs to know. Basics are important, but many of thestands made by fundamentalists are secondary, e.g. they cannot drink or smoke, etc. Also, the protestant stand against post-Biblical revelation is invalid, because as soon asthey admit to the validity of prophetic gifts, they give credence to the various Councils ofthe Church.7. Parables are picture stories Jesus used, in order to explain a truth. They arecomparisons. Jesus did not invent parables; they were used in the Old Testament as well.See 2 Samuel 12:1-14.8. The Bible was written in different languages. Most Old Testament Books were writtenin Hebrew, a few in Greek. The New Testament (NT), was written in Greek, with a fewpassages in Aramaic.9. In speaking, God Acts. His Word produces that which It Proclaims.10. The Word of God enlightened by the Holy Spirit produces some interior response.Faith reveals God and His Plan. Hope claims His Promise. it also provides a rule of loveto be acted out in the world.6

11. All can hear the Word of God, but each one must accept it, and keep it, to see itsfruits in him (Matthew 12:23; Mark 4:20; Luke 8:15).SALVATIONThis Bible study section is eternally important to you and all those you will be able tolead to eternity with God, and with God's help. This is called salvation. We are savedfrom eternal separation from God and become part of His family through belief in God'sSon, Our Lord, Jesus Christ. To say that someone has been saved means to most people that someone was taken froma dangerous situation. Many religions have the notion of "saving". In Christianity, thisnotion is the most important of God's actions on earth. Locate the Scripture references foreach statement below, and write them down:God saves man (Luke 2:11).A believer is one who has heard the gospel and accepted it by accepting Jesus Christ(Rom 1:16).The OT is a historical account of God saving Israel and preparing God's people for thecoming of the Messiah, Who would save all mankind. One can see that salvation doesn'toccur in human history without divine judgment coming also. As you mature in the Lord, you will see God's Mercy and Judgment always together.Find and write out the following Scriptures: Genesis 7:23; Wisdom 10:4-6; Isaiah 43:11.The prophets, inspired by God, developed the theme of God as Savior. (See Is 33:32; Is43:3; Zephaniah 3:7; Baruch 4:22; Ezekiel 36:29).Who will God save? (Is 45:22)Through reading and studying the OT, you will see Israel developing many prayersasking God for salvation, and to be saved from natural enemies and disaster:1. Where does salvation come from? (Psalms 37:39)2. Who did God save and how? (Dan 6:28)God always saves the person who hopes in Him (Dan 13:60). God promises this to Hisservants (Ps 69:36, 91:1). The proud and self-sufficient will not ask God to be saved.Who does God save? (Ps 7:11; 18:28; 34:16, 19; 55:17; 116:6; 145:19).7

The OT is God's revelation to man that man would once again belong to the family ofGod through the Messiah. The Messiah is the Son of God. All the prophecies, Psalms, and Wisdom literature are summed up in One, historical Person: Jesus. Christianity is theonly religion in the world that promises salvation by God Who Became Man.1. What did Jesus come to earth to do? (Lk 19:10)2. Jesus was sent by God the Father to save the world and not toit. (Jn 3:17; 12:47)3. What is the condition for salvation? (Mk 16:16)4. Man cannot save himself; how is he saved? (Acts 15:11)5. The Apostles and followers of Jesus, once saved, offered this gift of God to allmankind. (Acts 16:17)6. God desires the salvation of all men. (1 Tim 2:4)7. God sent His Son to be Savior. (1 Jn 4:14)8. Jesus came to make salvation known to all men. (Titus 2:11-13; 1 Tim 1:15; He 5:9)Most people come to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ through preaching. Once aperson has heard the Gospel, he makes a choice to believe, disregard, or disbelieve. Thischoice determines his eternal lot. (2 Thess. 2:10; 2 Cor. 2:15; Rom 10:9)You can see that the whole aim of Jesus was to let people know that God the Father lovedthem and wanted to save them from their impending eternal doom. God had a plan torestore man. All through his history, man has had hope. (Jn 12:47).The Universal Christian message is that God is love and He will not stop at anything tosave you. God offers salvation to men at every moment of their lives. (2 Corinthians 6:2)You need to know the steps that you must go through to be saved. We were created inGod's image, but when Adam and Eve sinned, man began to beget offspring who werecreated in the image and likeness of mankind (self). The quest of man is to once again seehimself in the image of God through grace. People are not at peace until they are at peacewith God, themselves and others. Only the Gospel of Jesus Christ permits a soul to reachthis state. Repent and believe: the basic steps to peace. (Rom 5:1)Man has a natural and spiritual fear of death. This fear is abolished when we know wehave eternal life: Death becomes Life. (Jn 3:16)8

Look around you. In all of God's creation --natural, spiritual, or psychological-- there isabundant life. The joy of the Lord assures the soul not only of salvation, but also that it isimportant to God, and has an important part in God's plan of salvation. (Jn 10:10)We are taught by the world to be self-sufficient, self-motivated and self-directed. TheBible clearly points out that the self must die. We need to become aware that we areseparated from God, but by faith in Jesus Christ, we become like God, through His workof the Holy Spirit. This transformation is God's work, not ours. Our work is to givetestimony to His work. He is the vine, we are the branches. We receive from Him, and webear fruit. Man is a sinner, and when the Holy Spirit is at work within his soul, hebecomes aware of the darkness and sin. Man can choose life. (Rom 3:23; Rom 1:28-29)Sin, according to the Bible, is separation from God. Salvation means restoration-to-God,or "being Saved". When we are living in sin, or if we have not been saved, anything wedo, good or bad, is not pleasing to God. God is pleased only with His children. (Rom6:23;Eph 2:8-9)Jesus died for us while were sinners (Rom 5:8). To have the saving knowledge of Jesus isto believe that Jesus is the only Way of salvation. It means you are persuaded; you haveaccepted God's Plan."I am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life; no one comes to the Father but throughMe."(Jn 14:6)IT IS OF VITAL ETERNAL CONSEQUENCE THAT YOU FULLY UNDERSTANDTHE FOLLOWING:The last step of God's Plan of salvation, is accepting and believing. "Any who did acceptHim, He empowered to become children of God" (Jn 1:12). Accepting Jesus is not thesame as simply believing that He is God.Do you believe that God and Jesus are one? You are quite right. Does this mean you aresaved? The demons believe that God and Jesus are one, and shudder. Are these demonssaved? Many people have an intellectual acceptance, just like the demons, that Jesus isGod. There must be a difference, right? There certainly is! To accept and believe thatJesus Christ is the Lord and Savior, in a Christian meaning, is to make Jesus the center ofyour life. You act on faith. A committed Christian is a true believer. They begin to bearfruit and to do the work of God. They are no longer self-centered, but God-centered.Jesus immediately leads a person to the Father, and the Father sends the Holy Spirit.(James 2:19)Do you have the Holy Spirit within you? "Here I stand, knocking at the door. If anyonehears Me calling and opens the door, I will enter his house and have supper with Him,and he with Me." (Revelations or Apocalypse 3:20)Why has God made this Plan? It is the issue of free will. God created you with a free will. The devil (God's enemy, and yours) cannot violate your free will, and God will always9

honor your free will. You can sum up the OT admonishments in this short sentence:Choose life and not death. If we are obedient to God, we have life; if we are disobedientto God, we remain in the state of separation from God. This is sin, or falling short of themark. Only God's Holy Spirit can empower you and change you. Only the Holy Spiritcan allow you to do the works of God.What we are to become we can only imagine, but we now know the fulfillment of God’splan lies in the infusion of His Divine Will with man, for in this way only, shall His Willbe done on earth as it is done in heaven by the Saints and Angels there. The steps you have learned are called "spiritual laws":1. Admit that you are a sinner, and need God to forgive you;2. Decide to turn away from sin, and trust Jesus for your salvation. (Repentance);3. Believe Jesus Christ is Who He Says He Is. He died on the cross for your sins. If youask Him for forgiveness, He is faithful to forgive you.4. Make Jesus the center of your life. Give total control to Jesus through the power andpresence of the Holy Spirit. You can reinforce the keeping of these spiritual laws bypraying this prayer:"Lord Jesus Christ, I acknowledge that I am a sinner, and I need Your forgiveness. I wantto love You with all my heart. I promise, to the best of my ability, to turn away from sin,and to seek to love You and others. I believe that You died for my sins, and I ask You atthis moment to come into my heart, and reside there, forever. I declare before heaven andearth, that You are Lord and Savior of my life, and that I belong to You. Come, LordJesus, and bring the Father. Come to transform me and make me like You. I ask You,Father God and Jesus, my Brother, to send to me at this moment, the Holy Spirit. I thankYou, God, for saving me. I thank You, Jesus, for making me Yours. I thank You, Father, for restoring me to Your Family."If you have prayed this prayer for the first time in your life, or you have recommited yourlife to Jesus, this is the beginning of your testimony. Your testimony is now how Godbegins to work in your soul to transform your heart and mind so you will think and actlike God, your Father in heaven. The Holy Spirit will teach you the Will of God, andwhat the Father wants you to do.Each moment of life will now be a teaching situation. God will give you manyopportunities to put faith into practice. He will also teach you to forgive as He forgives.REPENTANCEThe believer must understand repentance for their own growth, and to help othersunderstand. The remainder of this study will help you have an initial understanding ofThis subject.God calls men to be in communion with Him. Biblical repentance means to turn to God(Metanoia). It is an interior change. The prophets gave us the clear way:10

"Seek good and not evil, that you may live. Hate evil and love good and let justiceprevail." (Amos 5:14,15)"Wash yourselves clean! Put away your misdeeds from before My eyes; ease doing evil;learn to do good. Make justice your aim; redress the wronged, hear the orphan's plea;defend the widow." (Isaiah 1:16-17)"Cast away from you, all the crimes you have committed, and make for yourselves a newheart and a new spirit. Why should you die, O house of Israel? For I have no pleasure inthe death of anyone who dies, says the Lord God. Return and live!" (Ezekiel 18:31-32)"You must reform and be baptized, each one of you, in the Name of Jesus Christ, thatyour sins may be forgiven; then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." (Acts 2:38)"God calls on all men everywhere to reform their lives." (Acts 17:30)A common trick of the devil is to suggest to you that you have sinned against God afteraccepting Jesus, and are eternally doomed. How often do we forgive a person? (Luke 17:3-4)Read Matthew 18:21-22, then answer these questions:1. Peter was somewhat of a legalist. How often did he really want to forgive his brother?2. What was Jesus' replay to Peter?3. Are we acting like God when we forgive, even when the person does not deserve it?(1Jn 1:9-11)Is everyone tempted? Who helps us in temptation? How far can a temptation go? Whatdoes God promise a person who is under temptation. (1 Cor. 10:13)We are cooperators of grace. God builds on the natural. He gives us the means to grow, but we must decide to act and then act. Ephesians 4:24-32 illustrates this principle:1. What are the characteristics of a new self?2. What place do a deceitful heart and a lying tongue have in a Christian's life?3. Is it all right to be angry?4. If you are angry, what should you do?5. How should we change our speech?Read the following passages, the write them out in your own words: Mt 17:20; Jn 16:24;Jn 14:26; 1 Cor. 10:12-13; Philippians 2:12-13.11

TRUTHS ABOUT FORGIVENESSGod will give it to you, if you admit your sin and repent. When we forgive, we are acting like God.Forgiveness demands us to forgive.Forgive as we expect to be forgiven.Forgive 70 X 7X (or an unlimited number of times)Love your enemies.Love is the basis of forgiveness.God the Father will forgive us exactly as we forgive our brothers from our hearts. The greatest sin is the sin of unbelief. The blessings of forgiveness are:clear conscience;peace;fellowship with God and man;prayers will be answered;fear removed;we act like God;we are forgiven.Jesus upon His cross prayed to the Father, asking Him to forgive us our sins. Examine thefollowing verses and list the reasons we must forgive others: Colossians 3:12-15; Isaiah1:16-20; Matthew 6:12; Ephesians 4:30-32; Galatians 5:15-16, 6:7-10.From the Scriptures given, is it possible to harbor unforgiveness in our hearts and stilllove God? In order to be able to love God, what must we first do? (1 Jn 1:20-21; Mt 5:2324)Make a list of people you need to forgive, and ask God to give you the grace to forgivethem. Jesus has taught us that in order to be forgiven, we must forgive. For each personyou need to forgive, repeat the following prayer, offering forgiveness and asking God toforgive them. Keep in mind, forgiveness is a choice we freely make or freely withhold: Itis not dependent on feelings. Be honest with God, and He will help you.Lord, I thank You for Your astonishing, atoning death on the cross, for shedding YourBlood for me, for forgiving me my sins, and raising me to a new life in You. Thank Youfor the grace to forgive others. I now forgive (name) for (what he/she did) . Irelease them from any bonds, and ask You, Lord, to forgive them and bring them to anew life in You.Often, with the "help" of the evil one, we believe our sins are unforgivable, or perhapsthere is a particular sin we have committed, which we never have been able to confess, because we are afraid to face our sins, fearing rejection and unforgiveness from God. Wesometimes find it difficult to ask God for forgiveness and/or believe He can still love us,knowing our sins. Read Jn 3:16-18, and rewrite it in your own words, so it reflects God'sLove for you, personally.12

If we believe in Jesus, and believe He came for us personally, then based on what Hewent through for YOU, you must believe He will grant you forgiveness. Would it makesense that He willingly dies for you, and then He would rather see you burn in hell thanforgive you and take you back, if only you ask?Read Matthew 7:7-11. If we truly want to be free of the burden of unconfessed sin, all weneed to do is ask Jesus. Spend a few minutes reflecting on God's Love for you, and howJesus does not condemn you, but is right now waiting for you to come to Him and ask, soHe may grant you His forgiveness. Now pray and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any unconfessed sin which you need Jesus toforgive. As the Holy Spirit brings these to mind, ask God for pardon and Mercy for yoursins. It is always advisable to see your spiritual director for confession, sharing with himwhat the Holy Spirit reveals to you.DISCIPLESHIPWhat is a disciple?A disciple is a person who freely puts himself in a school of a teacher who will share hisviews as a teacher. Jesus had many disciples, some of whom were called apostles."Disciple" is a word rarely mentioned in the OT. It's a development of a Biblical tradition, but the meaning comes basically from Jesus. The OT does mention Elisha followingElijah, and becoming a person observing and listening to Elijah (1 Kings 19:19). Again,in Is 8:16 we find a few fervent disciples listening and trusting this man of God.It is very evident that man is to attach himself to God's Word. Divine Wisdom calls manto learn, to listen, and to implement the Word in his life. One of the greatest promises to adisciple, is that in the last days, God would make Himself Master of hearts and He wouldteach them (Jeremiah 31:31-34). This is a prophecy of the Coming of the Messiah, Whowould gather disciples and give them power to make others disciples of God.These OT disciples of Yahweh were called to listen each morning and receive the tongueof a disciple, and then go forth to use this word to instruct, warn, call man to repentance.Faithful to this prophecy, the psalmist would pray to God, "Lord, teach me!"We need to learn from the OT disciples: Jesus rose and prayed in the morning. Helearned to listen and to pray. This is a goal toward which each of us should strive. It was not until the return from the exile, a period when the law became the primaryobject of teaching, do we find men coming forth and speaking in their authority aslearned men about the law. These people later were called "Doctors" of the law. Paulstated he was a disciple of Gamaliel (Acts 22:3). It was their commentary on the lawwhich developed into tradition. It is not hard to see how human wisdom replaced God'sWisdom.13

The NT defines a disciple as one who has accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Thechanging point in this definition of a disciple really takes place around the time of Johnthe Baptist. Jn 9:28 mentions disciples of Moses, and in John 1:35, we read about thedisciples of John the Baptist. There is even one reference to disciples of the Pharisees (Mt22:16).The Twelve Apostles are the first example of the NT disciples, but we learn there were72 others who were sent out with authority to do the works of God (Lk 10:1). Lk 6:17,19:37, indicate that there were many disciples and that many gave up! There was a priceto pay. True discipleship means you lose your values, taking on the values of the Master. In our case, it means dying to "self", and resurrection to the Image of Jesus. Day by day, degree by degree, we are transformed into the Image of Jesus. This transformation takesplace first in the mind. The Doctors of the law, and sadly, many people today, made disciples for themselves. The Holy Spirit calls us to make disciples for Christ, not for ourselves. (Mt 28:19; Acts14:21). We need to study the difference between disciples of the world, or old tradition, and the disciples of Jesus. We can also learn how God teaches by examining thedifference characteristics and requirements of discipleship.Jesus was different because:1. He called people regardless of their qualifications or moral background.2. It was the Father Himself Who gave disciples to Jesus. It is a work of God, not a workof man. We recruit, God calls. Man must respond to God's Word.3. Jesus said, "Follow Me." He was not calling people because of their ability to go tocollege, or pass examinations. They didn't even have to know Latin. The verb, "follow",meant to become attached to Jesus. We are to follow by becoming detached from theworld and self, and attached to the Lord. (Mt 8:19)4. To follow
