ShieldedapplicationsThe Roxtec EMC system is designed for applications where electromagnetic compatibility is ofprime importance.Electromagnetic compatibility, EMC,means that electric and electronicdevices can operate together in acommon electromagnetic environment, without causing malfunctions to each other. All electricand electronic devices affect theelectromagnetic environment, oftenin a way that is detrimental to othersuch devices. Currents and voltagesinadvertently generated by electriccircuits are spread as unwanted cur-Roxtec EMC modules are available in two different versions.The Roxtec ES (electromagneticshielding) module, marked withwhite stripes, is developed forprotection against RFI/EMI andsecure potential equalization,and the Roxtec PE (potentialrents, or as electromagnetic waveswhich in turn generate currents inmetallic objects. This isdone by using shielded (screened)cables and by proper grounding.GroundingThe cable screen protects the cableconductors from generated electromagnetic disturbance currents. Itmakes incoming electromagneticwaves generate currents in thescreen, at the outside of thecable, rather than in the conductors inside the cable. Vice versa,the screen blocks electromagneticfields generated by the currentsinside the cable from reaching outside the cable. The result is thatcurrents and stray currents will flowin the cable screen. The influence ofthe stray currents is neutralized byproviding them a path to ground.Ground, or earth, is an engineeringterm for a general reference point,0 V, for most electric and electronicdevices.The Roxtec EMC system providessuch a current path between cablescreens and ground. The screens ofthe cables passing through thesame cable inlet are grounded viathe Roxtec EMC system modulesand frame. Conductive layersinside the modules also stopelectromagnetic waves which wouldotherwise pass between the cablesfrom one side of the inlet to theother. These layers are also grounded via the frame which surroundsthe modules.Current pathThe frame itself must be groundedto a designated grounding point viaa ground wire, or via the frame.
