BASELINE ASSESSMENT OF DEMOGRAPHICREPRESENTATION IN AAAS/Science FUNCTIONSOctober 2020Copyright American Association for the Advancement of Science10/22/2020

Introduction to Baseline Assessment of Diversity, Equityand Inclusion in AAAS/Science FunctionsAAAS is committed to taking concrete actions to address systemic racism. To this end, we have embarked on a three-pronged draft plan: Hold up a mirror to ensure accountabilityAAAS programs and initiatives to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in science and engineeringAAAS actions to ensure DEI within AAASScience, engineering and medicine are not immune to the discrimination, subjugation, and silencing of minority colleagues and voices. The reasons for thisare deeply ingrained in the systems that govern the conduct of these fields. When we hold up a mirror to the scientific enterprise, it is clear we must bereminded that Black and other underrepresented minority lives – and scientific contributions – matter. We must ensure this moment does not slip away.We can and must be a powerful force for change (Parkih, 2020; draft plan). We have completed the first step of holding up a mirror to ensure accountability with the Baseline Assessment of DEI in AAAS/Science Functions. This isAAAS’ first annual effort to make public aggregate demographic data on: Authors, reviewers, award winners, and fellowsSelect functions of AAAS.This report is a baseline assessment. It examines the availability and quality of our demographic data and presents the current demographicrepresentation for AAAS/Science Functions and Science Family Authors and Reviewers. We will work to improve the quality of our data and methodologyover time. This report does not lay out a plan for next steps in addressing DEI in AAAS/Science Functions. At this point, we are merely reporting on andacknowledging the current status and content of our data.We invite you to email us your suggestions for addressing DEI in AAAS/Science and improving our data and methodology by emailing us atsuggestionsforaaas@aaas.org. While we will not be able to respond to each email individually, know that the AAAS Leadership Team will consider each one.Copyright American Association for the Advancement of Science10/29/20201

METHODOLOGYCopyright American Association for the Advancement of Science10/22/20208

Methodology: OverviewData Collection and Analysis Process Overview1Assemble data for all AAAS/Science Functions and Science Family Authors andReviewers.2Assess for consistency of demographic data.3Estimate gender*.4Decide categories for gender and race/ethnicity.5Decide how to count individuals within and across functions.6Present results.*Lincoln Mullen (2018). Gender: Predict Gender from Names Using Historical Data. R package version 0.5.2.Copyright American Association for the Advancement of Science10/22/20209

Step 1. Assemble Data for All AAAS/Science Functions andScience Family Authors and Reviewers Focus on AAAS and Science Family Functions that enable success andadvancement in science and engineering. Obtained data for the “most recent” or “present” class of each AAAS andScience Family Function. For example: 2020 Board of Directors. 2020/21 class of S&T Policy Fellows. 2019 class of Honorary Fellows. Science Family Authors and Reviewers September 2019 throughAugust 2020.Copyright American Association for the Advancement of Science10/22/202010

Step 2. Assess Assembled Demographic Data forConsistency Across SourcesCopyright American Association for the Advancement of Science10/22/202011

Step 3. Estimate GenderABGENDER DATASTILL MISSING?APPLYSTATISTICALPACKAGE*CACCEPTESTIMATES WITH 95%CONFIDENCE*Lincoln Mullen (2018). Gender: Predict Gender from Names Using Historical Data. R package version 0.5.2.Copyright American Association for the Advancement of Science10/22/202012

Strengths and Weaknesses of “Gender R PackageVersion 0.5.2”StrengthsWeaknessesHas at least 98% accuracy rate for ourpopulation. Can only infer gender likely to have beenassigned at birth based on the name. The name dictionary on which thepackages relies is diverse andmultiethnic.Less accurate without birth-year databecause some names change genderassociation over time, although this isminimized by selecting only thoseestimates with 95% confidence. For additional information: https://docs.ropensci.org/gender/Copyright American Association for the Advancement of Science10/22/202013

Step 4. Decide Categories for Gender andRace/EthnicityIssueDecisionInconsistent use of “decline to answer” for ethnicityand/or gender across functions and subgroups.Included “no data” category. Some groups have race and ethnicity broken out intotwo questions where ethnicity identifies “Hispanic orLatinx” and race does not include this as an option;most have one race/ethnicity question whereHispanic/Latinx and “Two or more races/ethnicities”are options. In cases where race and ethnicityare asked separately, If Hispanic orLatinx is selected, this designationsupersedes the response to thesecond race question.Copyright American Association for the Advancement of Science10/22/202014

Step 5. Decide How to Count IndividualsWithin and Across FunctionsIssueExampleDecisionIndividuals show upmultiple times within afunction. In Staff Leadership, all Advisory Council membersare also on the Leadership Team.Counted oncewithin the functionIndividuals show upmultiple times acrossfunctions. An Elected Leader also is part of an awardselection committee.Counted in eachfunctionOverall presentation ofresults.Individuals show up in multiple functions andmultiple subgroups.Counted once foroverall resultsCopyright American Association for the Advancement of Science10/22/202015
